Connie Warren Jr.
Connie Kearfott Warren Jr., 80, of 115 Knollwood Drive, Collinsville, died Sunday, June 16, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born in Martinsville, and graduated from Martinsville High School and Washington and Lee University. Warren was a decorated World War II, Army veteran where he was awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion.
He retired in 1988 from Virginia Carolina Freight Lines, and he was a member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church.
His parents were the late Connie Kearfott Warren Sr. and Olgie Gillette Warren.
Surviving are his wife, Katherine Warren of the home; sons, David "Chip" Warren of Christiansburg and Timothy A. Warren of Rocky Mount; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at McKee-Stone chapel with Dr. David Atkins officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral Thursday, and other times at the home.

Regina M. Turner
The funeral for Regina Mae Turner, 48, of 4070 Preston Road, Martinsville, who died Monday, July 10, 2006, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Mount Olive East Christian Church. The Rev. Kenneth Davis will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church for a half-hour before the service Monday, and other times at the home.
She was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., on Dec. 21, 1957, to James W. Turner of the home, and Nannie Watkins Turner. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Henry Hayes.
She was a member of Mount Olive East Christian Church, where she was in Sunday school, Christian Women's Fellowship and also assisted with vacation Bible school.
In addition to her father, surviving are two sisters, Joan Marville of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., and Brenda Patterson of Martinsville; a stepsister, Sarah Jones of New York; and a brother, James R. Hayes of Ridgeway.

Dennis E. Witcher Sr.
PENHOOK -- Dennis Edward Witcher Sr., 61, of Witcher Road, Penhook, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 27, 1945, in Franklin County, to Claude Witcher and Beatrice W. Witcher. He retired from Stanley Furniture Co. and he was a member of the Greater Mt. Parrish Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Dennis Edward Witcher Jr. of Martinsville; two brothers, Roger Witcher of Columbus, Ohio, and Alvin Witcher of Penhook; two sisters, Geraldine Daniels of Columbus, Ohio, and Evelyn Witcher of Maryland; and six grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Greater Mt. Parrish Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony Woody officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be for a half-hour before the funeral.
Arrangements are by Stanfield Mortuary Service, Rocky Mount.
James D. Woods Sr.
James Dewey Woods Sr., 58, of 72 Deer Meadow Drive, Martinsville, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C.
He was born in Pottsdam, N.Y., on Aug. 15, 1947, to Nelson Woods and Mildred Russell Woods. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jeffery Woods, Jay Woods and Jack Woods; three sisters, Joyce Gladding, June and Joan Stewart; and a granddaughter, Brittany Woods.
He retired from Ridgeway Clocks.
Surviving are his wife, Judie Woods of the home; three sons, James Woods Jr. of Spencer, Joe Woods of Axton and Keith Woods of Danville; four brothers, Joseph Woods and Jerry Woods of Fort Smith, Ark., John Woods of Syracuse, N.Y. and Jerald Woods of Chicopee, Mass.; three sisters, Janice Woods of Corpus Christie, Texas, Jean Stewart of Norfolk, N.Y., and Joy Wher of Chicopee; and 10 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home on Deer Meadow Drive, Martinsville. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Kennedy G. Ziglar
Kennedy Grace Ziglar, infant daughter of Donna David Ziglar and Kenneth Bryce Ziglar, of 785 Fairmont Drive, Bassett, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital. She was born in Roanoke on June 22, 2006.
Surviving in addition to her parents, are paternal grandfather, Hobart B. Ziglar Jr. of Patrick Springs, and paternal grandparents, Carol and J.D. Taylor of Sutherlin; maternal grandparents, Ronald and Carole David of Penhook, and maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Douglas David of Penhook; seven uncles; six aunts; and 22 cousins.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Christian Fellowship Church in Glade Hill. The Rev. Bill Doss will officiate. Burial will be at the David family cemetery at Penhook.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Collins Funeral Services in Bassett, and other times at the home on Fairmont Drive, Bassett.

Melissa A. Compton
The funeral for Melissa E. Aldrich Compton, 19, of Ridgeway, who died Tuesday, July 4, 2006, in an automobile accident in Patrick County, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. Pastor David Heath will officiate. Burial will be at Mountain View cemetery in Ridgeway.
She was born Oct. 27, 1986, in Fremont, Neb., and was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ernest Greenfield and Melvin and Josephine Aldrich.
She graduated from Patrick County High School in 2004 and attended Patrick Henry Community College. She was a member of Mayo Mountain Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Timothy W. Compton of the home; son, Christopher Compton of the home; father, Melvin G. Aldrich Jr. of Nebraska; mother and stepfather, Brenda G. and Chester Springston of Stuart; sister, Katherine Aldrich of Lexington; brother, Melvin Aldrich II of Stuart; half-sister, Parthenia Garlock of Wisconsin; three stepsisters, Genean Springston of West Virginia, and Geri Hazelwood and Chessie Rakes, both of Stuart; and grandparents, Kraig and Sumiko Jacobson of Nebraska.
Betty H. Drake
LOS ANGELES, Calif -- Betty Carol Haga Drake, 59, of Los Angeles, formerly of Horsepasture, Va., died June 29, 2006, at the UCLA Medical Center.
She was born in Wytheville, Va. on June 25, 1947, to Andrew B. Haga and Helen Bralley Haga. She graduated from Drewry Mason High School and was a member of the Horsepasture Christian Church. She attended Richmond Professional Institute and worked for the Cancer Research Center at UCLA until her retirement. Her parents preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband, Jim Drake of Los Angeles; a daughter, Laura Drake Davis of Mineral, Va.; a brother, Jerry D. Haga of Ridgeway; and a foster sister, Shirley Bralley Holland of Ridgeway.
The memorial service will be held at the Horsepasture Christian Church at a later date.
Ida H. Helms
Ida Louise Handy Helms, 69, of 105 Helms Ridge Ln., Stuart, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center at Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on June 20, 1937, to Larkin Handy and Dorothy Lelia Lankford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Elmer Helms; two sisters Doris Hall and Margaret Helms; a brother, Burton Handy; and a granddaughter, Jessica Helms.
Surviving are a daughter, Sherry "Peachy" Pace of Stuart; three sons, Jerry Helms and Perry Helms, both of Stuart, and Terry Helms of Pitkin, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Howell Funeral Home in Patrick Springs. Ministers Gary Combs and Reggie Steele will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Methodist Church cemetery at Meadows of Dan.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Robert Preston Jr.
The funeral for Robert "Chucky" Preston Jr., 37, of 935 Southland Drive, Martinsville, who died July 4, 2006, at the home, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Waterway Temple Holiness Church. Bishop Thurman Hargrove will officiate and burial will be in the Stanley family cemetery at Bassett.
The family is receiving friends at the home of a sister, Karen Preston at 1805 Sunset Drive, Bassett, and will receive friends at the church for an hour before the service.
Preston was born in Bassett on June 21, 1969, to George Preston and Edmonia Stanley Preston. His parents preceded him in death.
Surviving are four sisters, Janice Terry of Martinsville and Karen Preston, Failour Roman and Patrina Preston, all of Bassett; and one brother, Steven Preston of Ridgeway.

Louise Katherine Kendrick Turner, 95, of 5934 Virginia Ave., Bassett, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at Stanleytown Health Care.
