Viola W. Burchell
EDEN, N.C. -- Viola Ann Williams Burchell, 72, of 114 Buchanan St., died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at her home.
She was born Aug. 30, 1934, in Spray, to James Howard and Beulah Jones Williams.
She retired from Pannill Knitting Co. of Martinsville, Va., in 1988.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore R. Burchell Sr.; and two sisters, Ruby Grogan and Shirley Marron.
Surviving are a son, Theodore "Theo" R. Burchell Jr.; three daughters, Julie Rutan, Connie Earles and Diana Crowder, all of Eden; a sister, Dorothy Burroughs, also of Eden; a brother, James H. Williams of Baltimore; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Ridgeview Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home of a daughter at 109 Cedar Falls Lane in Eden.
Philip J. Johnson
Charlotte, N.C. -- Philip Joseph Johnson, 59, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at his home.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Gloria W. Johnson; two daughters, Amy J. Bozart of Bradenton, Fla., and Sara J. Carpenter of Huntersville; one sister, Mary Johnson of Greensboro; five brothers, Edward Johnson and Harry Johnson, both of Charlotte, Paul Johnson of Monroe, Frank Johnson of Statesville and Greg Johnson of Brandon, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
His father, Paul Johnson preceded him in death.
He graduated from Charlotte Catholic High School in 1965 and received a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973.
He was employed by Price Waterhouse in Winston-Salem and continued his accounting career with Lykes Youngstown in New Orleans and then Brenner Industries in Winston-Salem.
In 1980, he moved to Martinsville, Va., and worked for Tultex Corp. in the financial department. He retired as its director of financial planning.
He also served on the board of the Diabetes Foundation in Martinsville.
Services will be held at noon Thursday at Hankins & Whittington's Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte.
A reception will follow at the home of Harry and Sandy Johnson.

Clyde Jones, 80, of Bassett, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at his home.
Bassett Funeral Service is handling arrangements.
Darrel M. Redd
The funeral for Darrel Mearse Redd, 47, of 99 Honey Drive, Bassett, who died Aug. 29, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, was held Monday at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Harold Carelock Jr. officiated. Burial was in the Smith family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Melvin Redd, Larry Redd, Luther Redd, Ozzie Preston, Kevin Preston, Michael Preston, Larry Wimbush and Tammy Wade.
Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Florence S. Roberson
The funeral for Florence Setliff Roberson, 91, of Stuart, who died Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, was held Monday at Moody Funeral Home with Pastors Rick Randall and Mike Varner officiating. Burial was in Union Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Brad Spencer, Guy Keiseterson, Ryan Keiseterson, Richard Setliff, Jerry Roberson and Glayton Setliff.
Dera R. Spencer
The funeral for Dera Rigney Spencer, 82, of Mt. Olivet Road, Martinsville, who died Aug. 31, 2006, was held Monday at Norris Funeral Services chapel. The Rev. Robert Breckenridge officiated. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Harold Edwards, Jerry Edwards, Victor Craswell, Walter Hanger, Doyle Spencer, Russell Hancock, Bruce Fain and Bill Waldrop.
Mary Taylor
Mary Taylor, 87, of 755 Stultz Road, Martinsville, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at her home.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Collins Funeral Services.
Charmie P. Isom
Charmie Pugh Isom, 75, of 1526 Dillons Fork Road, Fieldale, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
She was born Feb. 8, 1931, in Grayson County to Mose Warfield Pugh and Martha Wadell Pugh. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Shumate and Wanda Bottomley.
She retired from Tultex after 38 years of service and was of the Holiness faith.
Surviving are her husband, Albert G. Isom of Fieldale; two sons, Stephen Ray Isom of Bassett and Richard Lee Isom of Haywood County, N.C.; four sisters, Virginia Pugh, Mattie Farmer and Wilma Jean Soots, all of Martinsville and Betty Jo Arruza of Newton, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Norris Funeral Services chapel with the Rev. Virgil Soots officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the chapel.

Donald V. Shannon Sr.
EDEN, N.C. - Donald V. "Don" Shannon Sr., 93, of the Bayberry Retirement Inn in Eden and formerly of White Stone, Va. and Collinsville, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 24, 1913, in the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia to Charles Melvin Shannon and Lena Raese Shannon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers; two sisters; first wife, Laura R. Middleton Shannon; and second wife, Marian Davis Shannon.
He graduated from Triplett High School and attended Roanoke College where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He retired from a department store as manager.
Surviving are his daughter, Peggy Shannon Wray of Woolwine; a son, Don V. Shannon Jr. of Richmond; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
No services will be held.
Norris Funeral Services and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
Larry K. Spangler
Larry Kent Spangler, 60, of Meadows of Dan, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County to Dorn Odell Spangler and Gaynelle Reynolds Spangler of Meadows of Dan. His father preceded him in death.
Surviving in addition to his mother, are his wife, Elizabeth Anne Spangler of the home; a daughter, Elizabeth C. Spangler of Wagram, N.C.; a son, Todd Blake Eiklor of Meadows of Dan; a brother, Terry Spangler of Richmond; two sisters, Phyllis Bryant and Silvia Hawkins, both of Chatham; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jack Holland officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends after the service.
Mary G. Vernon
EDEN, N.C. - Mary Garleen Vernon, 84, of 223 Bryant St., Eden, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at Morehead Nursing Center.
She was born Sept. 19, 1921, in Leaksville to Jesse Franklin Lea and Carrie Flannagan Lea. Her parents preceded her in death.
She retired from Belk after 25 years of service. She was a member of the Eden Garden Club and also was part of Morehead Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Weldon Vernon of the home; a daughter, Frances Vernon of Eden; a brother, Dwight Lea of Eden; a sister, Becky Isley of Eden; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ridgeview Memorial Gardens in Eden.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today at Fair Funeral Home in Eden.
