Carl J. Barrett Sr.
Carl J. Barrett Sr., 82, of Mineral, died Saturday, June 3, 2006.
Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 8 at Lacy Funeral Home, Mineral. Interment will be private.
He is survived by his son, Carl J. Barrett Jr. of Mineral; his daughter, Carlene Hanken of California; six sisters, Alice Hanken, Frances Mitchell, Audrey Thomas, Addie Townsen, Evelyn Artten and Angeline McCloud; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.
Mr. Barrett was born January 13, 1924 in Goochland, the son of the late Clyde and Henrietta Cox Barrett.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy, World War II and a retired employee of Thomas Electronics.
Shirley P. Burruss
Shirley P. “Patsy” Burruss, 60, of Bumpass, formerly of Richmond, died Friday, June 2, 2006.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 5 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Interment was at Elk Creek Baptist Church cemetery, Louisa.
She is survived by her mother, Frances Harris Burruss; her sister, Mary F. Chewning and her husband, Doug; her nephew, Paul Douglas Chewning and his wife, Amanda; one great-niece, Madison Hannah Chewning; a great-nephew, Nicholas Paul Chewning; and a number of cousins and extended family.
Ms. Burruss was preceded in death by her father, Paul A. Burruss.
She graduated from Spotsylvania High School and was a 1966 graduate of the Johnston-Willis School of Nursing.
She retired from Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield as an underwriter. After her retirement, she worked part-time for Patient First.

Christine C. Filer
Christine Campbell Filer, 88, of the Masonic Home of Virginia, died Thursday, June 1, 2006.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 5 at Forest Lawn cemetery, Norfolk.
She is survived by her children, Thomas W. Filer Jr. and his wife, Pat, of Orange, Delores F. Winn and her husband, Will, of Chesterfield, and Jeri L. Downs of Atlanta, Georgia; two sisters, Maggie McGlohon of Tarboro, North Carolina, and Tessie Mack of Palmyra; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Filer was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Filer Sr.; and a son, Shelby Wetherington.
She was a retired bacteriologist with the Water Purification Department, Norfolk.

William E. “Billy” Hawk Jr.
William “Billy” Ernest Hawk Jr., 44, of Hastings, formerly of Holly Grove, died Sunday, May 14, 2006 at Flagler Hospital.
Memorial services were held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at the family home.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn Hawk; twin sons, Kyle William Hawk and Kristopher Alan Hawk; his mother, Joyce Wynn and his stepfather, Larry Wynn; and his brothers, Jeff Hawk, Shane Hicks and Todd Hawk.
Mr. Hawk was preceded in death by his father, William E. Hawk Sr.
He was a safety inspector for an insurance company and a musician.

Frances A. Nelson
Frances Alconia Nelson, 74, died Saturday, May 27, 2006 in Powhatan.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Frederick Sales, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 1 at Rising Sun Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Garfield W. Nelson Sr.; three daughters, Alconia Anderson and her husband, the Rev. Temple Anderson Sr., of Mineral, Shirldean Callis and her husband, Sam, of Powhatan, and Brenda Anderson and her husband, Rodney, of Mineral; a son, Garfield Nelson Jr. and his fiance, Helen Hunter; a goddaughter, Emily A. Burruss; four grandchildren, Temple Anderson Jr. and his wife, Chelle, Keshawn Terry and her husband, Avis, Towana Hope and Kashawnda Anderson; nine great-grandchildren, Lamond, Kavia, Avisha, Trevon, Taji, Isa, Heavan, Brittany and Melik; two sisters, Della Carter and Margaret Houchens; one sister-in-law, Diane Wright of Orange, New Jersey; four brothers-in-law, James Minor and his wife, Helyne, of Powhatan, Curis Shelton and his wife, Julia, Eugene Shelton and his wife, Grace, and Leslie Shelton of Mineral; a number of nieces, nephews and friends; and five devoted friends, Lorene Jackson, Bertha Davis Houchens, Frances Hunter, Betty Burruss and Julia Robinson.
Mrs. Nelson was born October 7, 1931, the daughter of the late Horace Lee and Margaret Green. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Donald Lee Green.
She was baptized and became a member of Rising Sun Baptist Church in 1943. She was an active member/president of the gospel choir, member of the senior choir, secretary of the pastor's aid club and past member of the usher board, past secretary of Sunday school and the senior choir.
She graduated from Louisa Training School and was employed at Rockingham Sleepwear were she was a supervisor and retired from Louisa Manufacturing.

Louise T. Talley
Louise Alice Trainum Talley, 92, of Yorktown, died Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Regency Health Care Center, Yorktown.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. David LeKarczyk, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 30 at Peninsula Funeral Home. Interment was in Peninsula Memorial Park.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Knight and her husband, Pete, of Yorktown; three grandchildren, Larry Knight, Diana Wagnitt and Karen Morrison; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Bandy of Fredericksburg; and a brother, Roy Trainum, of Louisa.
Mrs. Talley was born January 26, 1914, the daughter of the late Walter and Annie Trainum of Spotsylvania. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James W. Talley.
She was a member of Louisa Baptist Church.
Esther H. Letner
Esther Lovedy Hammer Letner, 88, of Charlottesville died Saturday, July 8, 2006 at the Laurels of Charlottesville.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Ray Kline, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday July 13 at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home, Charlottesville. Entombment will follow in the Monticello Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
She is survived by her daughter, Lovedy Papproth of Orange and formerly of Louisa; a son, Ivan E. Letner Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Earlysville; a brother, Milton E. Hammer and his wife, Jean, of Temple Hills, Maryland; five grandchildren, Janine P. Williams and her husband, Paul, of Orange, Leonard E. Papproth Jr. of Weston, Florida, Kara L. Wood and her husband, Samuel, of Mechanics-ville, Cathy Garrison and her husband, Vincent, of Stanards-ville, and John T. Falls of Gaithersburg, Maryland; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Letner was born August 29, 1917 in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Milton E. Hammer Sr. and Florence Virginia Padgett Hammer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ivan E. Letner Sr.; a granddaughter Shelly A. Smith; and two sisters, Violet Ihre and Catherine Moore.
She assisted her husband in his prosthetic business for many years, was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Electa Chapter Number 2 Washington, D.C.; a volunteer “Pink Lady” at Martha Jefferson Hospital for 14 years, and a member of Corrotoman Baptist Church in Lancaster.

Nancy Joan Rickard, 58, of Louisa, died Thursday, July 6, 2006 at her residence.
Graveside services, conducted by the Rev. Roger Bevins, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 16 at the Brooks-Lloyd family cemetery in Spotsylvania.
She is survived by her children, Michael Allen Cummings, John Paul Cummings and Angela Marie Cummings; her brother, Harold Leroy Brooks; and nine grandchildren.
Mrs. Rickard was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Rickard.

Elmer R. Rogers
Elmer Roy Rogers, 82, of Louisa, formerly of Waynes-boro, died Monday, July 10, 2006 at his residence.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Tom Reynolds and the Rev. Katha Ballfrass, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 14 at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Gordonsville. Interment will be in the Bybee Road Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 13 at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene Parsley Rogers; four daughters, Kiva Rogers Ryan and her husband, Dr. Thomas Ryan, of Eugene, Oregon, Cheryl Jane Gerhart and her husband, Ron, of Churchville, Trudy Ann Bradley and her husband, Wayne, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Kelley Williams of Atlanta; two stepsons, William Beverly and his wife, Jennifer, of Richmond, and Donald Beverly of Louisa; a stepdaughter, Betty Driver and her husband, Michael, of Fort Pierce, Florida; a brother, Wesley Rogers of Hunstville, Alabama; three sisters, Violet Britner, Tina Bryan and Orpha “Sis” Loughry, all of Rowlesburg;five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Rogers was born August 29, 1923 in Rowlesburg, West Virginia, the son of the late Harvey C. Rogers and Effie Shaffer Rogers. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Calvin Lee Rogers; and a sister, Lula Belle Six.
He was a marine veteran of World War II.
