Nettie Moore
Nettie Gravely Moore, 94, formerly of 1206 Forest St., died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born July 3, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lucy Ann Gravely.
She was married
to Willie L. Moore, who predeceased her.
She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church.
She is survived by her son, George C. Moore of Danville; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today at St. Paul A.M.E. Church by the Rev. Tanya Lowe. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 154 Fairlane Drive.

James Bolden Sr.
James Andy Bolden Sr., 49, 148 Hunter St., died Tuesday morning, Dec. 23, 1997, at his residence after three years of declining health.
Born July 11, 1948, in Danville, he was a son of John Henry Bolden and Estelle Hiatt Bolden, who survives.
He was married
to Shirley Benton Bolden, who also survives.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he worked for Laramore Construction Co. and later worked as a mechanic.
He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his mother of Danville and his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Ann Marie Benton of South Carolina and Tammy Michelle Bolden Neatherly of Roxboro, N.C.; a son, James Andy Bolden Jr. of Dry Fork; a brother, Steve Bolden of Danville; a sister, Carolyn Powell of Callands; a stepdaughter, Essie Vaden of Danville; and a stepson, David L. Gibbs of Pelham, N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Daryl S. Joyce with full military honors by American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence in the Edgewood community.

Joe Campbell
RICHMOND - Joe Lewis Campbell, 59, 515 Jefferson Davis Highway, formerly of Pittsylvania County, died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond.
Born Aug. 11, 1938, in Franklin County, he was a son of John P. Campbell and Mary Pruitt Campbell.
He was employed by Goodwill Industries in Richmond and was a member of Watson Level Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Rufus Buck Campbell of Chatham and John Campbell of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Geraldine Mary Allen, the Rev. Blanche Dale Starling and Delores Witcher, all of Chatham; and two stepchildren, Kenneth Taylor of Jamestown, N.Y., and Rhonda Taylor of Maryland.
He was predeceased by a sister, Angela Campbell.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Watson Level Baptist Church by the Rev. Katie McKenzie. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Geraldine Mary Allen, Parks Apartments, Apt. 5-E, Chatham.

Carl Grubbs
The Rev. Carl Wesley Grubbs, 80, of Danville, died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was the husband of Shirley Franklin Grubbs.
Born in Brandy Station, July 26, 1917, he was the son of the late Rev. William Holcomb Grubbs and Edna Grubbs Grubbs. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Grubbs and Paul Grubbs and two sisters, Pearl Harvey and Willie G. Trent.
The Rev. Grubbs received his BA from Lynchburg College in 1948 and was a graduate of Emory University Seminary. He was a retired minister in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church and served many churches in the Lynchburg, Ashland, Rappahannock, Danville, Eastern Shore and Charlottesville districts.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a survivor of Pearl Harbor.
In April of this year, the Rev. Grubbs received a copyright for his original work, "Pythagoras Folly, " which stands as a major contribution to geometric science. It is a 52-year study and solution to the trisection of an angle with straightedge and compass -a solution that has puzzled mathematicians for more than 3, 000 years.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason, was Past Patron of Amherst Chapter No. 115, Order of the Eastern Star and Past Patron and member of Kaufman Chapter No. 87, Order of the Eastern Star, Danville.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Betty G. Hancock and her husband, Jerry, of Rustburg and Helen "Rie" Watts of Dallas; a sister, Elsie G. Mays of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, S. Dwaine Ware of Lynchburg and Karen Marie Ware of Amherst.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Court Street United Methodist Church, Lynchburg, by the Rev. Randolph Riley, the Rev. Donald Wilson, the Rev. Rudy Smith, the Rev. Wesley Astin, the Rev. Wayne Lanham and Dr. Willy N. Heggoy.
The family will receive friends at Court Street United Methodist Church after the service.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to any of the churches he served.

Stephanie Lewis
BELTSVILLE, Md. - Stephanie Gilbert Lewis, 26, 3586 Powder Mill Road, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
Born May 25, 1971, in Lynchburg, Va., she was a daughter of Benjamin Conway Gilbert Sr. and Ollie Slayton Gilbert, who survive.
She was married
to Anthony Lewis, who survives.
She received a bachelor of science degree in fashion merchandising from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She was employed as manager of Linen & Things in Maryland.
She was a member of First Buffalo Baptist Church in Halifax County, Va.
In addition to her parents of Gladys, Va., and her husband of Beltsville, survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Diamond Storme Lewis of Beltsville; two sisters, Laura Stephen of Lynchburg, Va., and Mina Nicole Gilbert of Richmond, Va.; and a brother, Benjamin Conway Gilbert Jr. of Beltsville.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at First Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. Arthur Holmes and the Rev. Melvin Palmer. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of an aunt, Eliza Mae Isaacs, 5082 Buffalo Road, Long Island, Va.

James Robertson
GRETNA - James Walter Robertson, 79, 696 Virginia St., died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Avante Nursing Home in Lynchburg.
Born Feb. 6, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Sam Robertson and Lillie Carter Robertson.
He was first married
to Lillie Beatrice Robertson, who predeceased him. He was later married
to Hattie Price Robertson, who also predeceased him.
He was a retired employee of Burlington Mills and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board.
Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Herman Robertson of Gretna and James Arthur Robertson of Atwater, Calif.; a daughter, Juanita Giles of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Sam Robertson of Washington, D.C. and Oakley Robertson of Gretna; two sisters, Frances Robertson and Georgia Walker, both of Baltimore; nine grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Willie Robertson and Larry Robertson; and four sisters, Lula Bennett, Virginia Ferguson, Bessie Coleman and Nannie Freeman.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Nathaniel Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Carrie Weaver
Carrie Lee Weaver, 76, formerly of 1304 College Park Extension, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 23, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center after a two-year decline in health. She had been a resident at the nursing home for two years.
Born Oct. 18, 1921, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Jacob Weaver and Mary Marshall Weaver.
She had spent most of her life in Danville, where she worked for the G.C. Murphy Co., as a salesperson before retiring.
She was a member of Community Baptist Church in Caswell County, N.C.
Survivors include four daughters, Peggy O'Neal Hunter and Martha Moore, both of Louisburg, N.C., Judy Powell of Providence, N.C., and Barbara Harris of Danville; two sons, Fred Weaver Jr. of Ringgold and Carl Weaver of Greensboro, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Community Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends immediately after the funeral at the church, and other times at the residence of Barbara Harris, 188 Avalon Drive.

Melvin Barbour
GRETNA - Melvin Barbour, 74, 15340 East Gretna Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at his residence.
Born Feb. 11, 1923, in Halifax County, he was a son of Bossie Barbour and Lizzie Logan Barbour.
He was married
to Adell T. Barbour, who predeceased him.
He was a retired employee of Burlington Industries in Altavista.
He was a member of Cluster Pine Holiness Church in Gretna.
Survivors include three sons, Melvin J. Barbour and John A. Barbour, both of Nathalie, and Royal Barbour of Gretna; three daughters, Jerlene Younger of Clarksville, Barbara Logan of Java and Deborah Tuner of Nathalie; a brother, B.C. Barbour of Washington, D.C.; and three sisters, Vergie Tucker of Gretna and Everlean Miller and Violet Lane, both of Wilmington, Del.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Cluster Pine Holiness Church by Bishop John Anthony Miller. Burial will be in the Barbour family cemetery.
