Anne Reynolds
CHATHAM - Anne Reynolds Reynolds, 70, 676 Triangle School Road, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born Sept. 22, 1927, in Danville, she was the daughter of Joseph Cephus Reynolds and Dora Rickman Reynolds.
She was married
to James Edward "Ceph" Reynolds, who survives.
She was a member of West End Christian Church and National Republican Committee.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by her half-sister, Christina Pittman of Arlington.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., today at Scott Funeral Home by the Rev. Haywood Alcorn and the Rev. Jack Oakes. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Vivian Tilghman
Vivian Taylor Tilghman died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997.
Born July 1, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Taylor and Minnie Bradner Taylor.
She was married
to Levin H. Tilghman Jr.
She had joined Macedonia Baptist Church at an early age, and later became a member of House of Prayer Episcopal Church.
She attended Pittsylvania County schools and in 1943, received her high school diploma. Following high school, she joined the Armed Forces (WAC), and was employed at the U.S. Naval Hospital from 1953 until the late 1970s.
Survivors include a daughter, Vivian Lynn Ball; a son, Levin Tilghman III; three sisters, Maryann and Laura Clements and Mildred Taylor; two brothers, Randolph and Jimmy Taylor; and three grandchildren.
Jesse "Joe" Abbott
Jesse Joseph "Joe" Abbott, 77, 196 Clement Ave., died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for several years.
Born Oct. 5, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jesse Raleigh Abbott and Jennienora Abbott.
He had lived most of his life in Danville and was a meat salesman for Smithfield Packing Company for many years before retiring in 1970.
He was a member of Piney Forest United Methodist Church, serving on the administrative board and was a member of the choir and treasurer of the Sunday school. He was a past Noble in the Order of Odd Fellows.
He was married
to Louise Hart Abbott, who died Sept. 24, 1982. He later married
Annie Hunt Owen, who survives, on April 7, 1987.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Sandra Abbott Blair; a son-in-law, John Charles Blair; and grandson, John Charles Blair II; all of Blairs.
Funeral services will be conducted at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel on Monday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Scott Holcomb McLean and the Rev. Steve W. Greer. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
John "Rocky" Archbold
John Edward "Rocky" Archbold, 53, 4976 Dry Fork Road, died Saturday morning, Dec. 20, 1997, at his residence.
Born July 22, 1944, in New Jersey, he was the son of Robert Archbold and Margie Glover Archbold.
He served 10 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and attained the rank of sergeant.
He worked as a mechanic at Dan River Inc. until his disability in April of this year.
He was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.
He was married
June 24, 1989, to Katherine O'Neil Edmunds Archbold, who survives.
Other survivors include five sons, John Shea and Kevin Shea of Brick, N.J., Carl Archbold of Germany, Justin Archbold of Georgia and Eddie Archbold of Dry Fork; one daughter, Ginger Satio of Brielle, N.J.; two brothers, Geral W. Archbold of Alexandria, and Thomas Archbold of New Jersey; and one sister, Jean A. Brown, of Rockville, Md.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hopewell United Methodist Church by Rev. Clay Knick with burial in Hopewell United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Max Boatwright
Max Graydon Boatwright, 87, 120 Clarendon Circle, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 6, 1910, in Longview, N.C., he was the son of W.L. Boatwright and Julia Thrasher Boatwright.
He had been a resident of Danville since 1946 and was a retired district manager for the Social Security Administration.
He was one of the founders as well as past president and board member of the Danville Area Council for Community Services, past treasurer of the Virginia Council for State Welfare and past member of the Vestry at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
He was past-president and treasurer of Little Theatre of Danville as well as one of the founding members.
He was a member of various other civic and social organizations.
He was married
to Fonda Mae Teufel Boatwright, who died Nov. 26, 1988.
Survivors include a brother, Robert Boatwright of Conover, N.C.; a daughter, Fonda Stuart Boatwright-Linkous of the residence and a son, Graydon Lee Boatwright of New Hill, N.C.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Alva Boatwright Christianson and Lena Allison Wise, and a brother, Harold Boatwright.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany by the Rev. James Mathieson. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
The son will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home, and the daughter will receive friends at the residence Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
At other times the family will be at the residence.

Teresa Hayes
Teresa Anderson Hayes, 32, 2674 Walters Mill Road, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997.
Born Feb. 13, 1965, she was the daughter of Joseph S. Anderson and Jacqueline Rich Anderson.
She lived most of her life in Danville and had worked as a bus driver for the city of Danville for the past 15 months. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents of Danville, survivors include her husband, Ricky L. Hayes; two sons, Ricky L. Hayes II and Daniel S. Hayes; and one daughter, Brandi N. Hayes, all of the residence; one sister, Arlene Fuqua of Danville; and three brothers, Anthony Anderson of Pelham, N.C., Kenneth Wayne Anderson and Bobby Lee Anderson, both of Danville.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Betty Hayes, 62 Hylton Ave., and the residence of her parents at 181 Banner St.
Robert Hubbard
Robert Hubbard, 69, of Gretna, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, in the Martinsville Health and Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville.
Born Aug. 4, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John W. Hubbard and Mary Davis Hubbard.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a construction worker. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
He was married
to Ruth Hubbard.
In addition to his wife of Portsmouth, survivors include four sons, Randolph Hubbard of New Orleans, Ronald Hubbard of Plainfield, N.J., Ralph Hubbard of Lawton, Okla., and Reginald Hubbard of Dillwyn; one daughter, Ruby Henry of San Diego; three sisters, Lottie Hodnett and Louvenia Callands, both of Gretna, and Betty Sue Cooper of Clearwater, Fla.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by six sisters, Eliza Taylor, Nannie Pearl Odom, Mary Alice Wyatt, Elizabeth Powe, Bertie Russ and Easter Bell Callands and four brothers, James Albert Hubbard, Andrew Hubbard, Richard Hubbard and Alcy Hubbard.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by Rev. Floyd Jones with burial in the Callands family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Lottie Hodnett, 641 Virginia Rd., Gretna.

Addie Irby
Addie Edwards Irby, 79, 18 Milton Ave., died Saturday morning, Dec. 20, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for five years.
Born in the Renan community of Pittsylvania County on May 10, 1918, she was the daughter of Richard B. Edwards and Maude Lee Haley Edwards.
She had lived in Danville for 54 years.
She was employed as a battery hand in 4A Weave Room at Dan River Inc. for 35 years before retiring in 1976 on disability.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She was married
to Floyd Andrew Irby.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include five daughters, Charlotte Irby Jordan of Odessa, Texas, Ethel Irby Martin, Carol Irby Worley and Hilda Irby Wyatt, all of Danville, and Sandra Irby Grubbs of Evington; one son, Ronald E. Irby of Martinsville; one sister, Minerva Redd of Java; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Fuenral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by Bishop Richard Bliss and Bishop William T. Collins with burial in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday night from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence at 18 milton Ave.
Melvin Rowland
HURT - Melvin Vernell Rowland, 82, 5977 Blue Ridge Drive, died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born march 10, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Johnson Rowland and Luella Haynes Rowland.
He was a member and former deacon of Midway Baptist Church. Mr. Rowland was a retired farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Moorefield Rowland, of the residence.
Other survivors include one sister, Othelia R. Rowland and her husband, Lee, of Hurt; two nieces, Phyllis R. Hudspeth and her husband, Bob, of Clemmons, N.C.; and Joy R. Synder and her husband, Dave, of South Boston; a great-nephew, Andrew Snyder, and a great-niece, Kelly Snynder, both of South Boston.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at Midway Baptist Church by Dr. Lynn Marstin and the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Interment will follow in the Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence at 5977 Blue Ridge Drive, Hurt.
