Nancy Pike
Nancy Cole Pike, 99, 125 Stokesland Ave., died early Tuesday morning, Dec. 16, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 16, 1898, in Paulding County, Ga., she was the daughter of Henry Cole and Rebecca Wix Cole.
She was married
to Arthur Pike, who died Dec. 23, 1963.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
She was the last of her generation of the family.
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Whipp of Homestead, Fla.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m., Friday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. David R. Turbyfill.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

George Powell
TROUTSVILLE - George Napoleon Powell, 72, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at Veterans Medical Center in Salem.
Born July 6, 1926, in Sutherlin, he was the son of Napoleon Powell and Lottie Moore Powell.
He was survived by his sister, Louise Ellison of Philadelphia.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at White Oak Baptist Church in Sutherlin. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Albert White Jr.
Albert Cornelius White Jr., 76, 900 Golf Club Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, at his residence after a year of declining health.
Born Dec. 15, 1921, in Danville, he was a son of Albert Cornelius White Sr. and Pearl McGuire White.
He was first married
to Juanita Crank White, who died June 13, 1987. He was later married
to Lucy Freeze White, who survives.
A lifelong resident of the Danville area, he was an insurance agent for and the owner of R.H. Ramey and Co.
He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, American Legion Post 325, Tuscarora Country Club and the Red Men.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Albert C. White III of Lynchburg and Stuart Lee White of Trezevant, Tenn.; two stepsons, Thomas Freeze and Edward Freeze, both of Danville; two sisters, Irene Holley and Helen Jackson, both of Danville; two brothers, Kenneth White of Asheville, N.C., and Richard White of Richmond; and five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Bernice White.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Keen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Campbell. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Edith Dalton
MARTINSVILLE - Edith Thomas Dalton, 72, Spruce Park, Lot 7, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997, at her residence.
Born Dec. 2, 1925, in Floyd County, she was a daughter of Raymond Asa Thomas Sr., and Annie Trusler.
She was married
to Robie N. Dalton, who died Nov. 21, 1997.
She was retired from Cone Mills in Reidsville, N.C., after 33 years of service.
She was a member of Southside Independent Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Earlene Waller of Bassett; and two brothers, Raymond A. Thomas Jr. of Floyd and the Rev. Donald S. Thomas of Martinsville.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Ralph O. Thomas.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at McKee-Stone Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Donald Thomas and the Rev. Gregory D. Thomas. Interment will be in Henry Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Rebecca 'Kitten' Stephens
VERNON HILL - Rebecca "Kitten" Stephens, 72, 721 Peytonsburg Road, died Tuesday night, Dec. 16, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 11, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Inman Henry and Madella Henry.
She was married
to Carter Stephens, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Sammy Stephens of Halifax and Harry Stephens of Forrestville, Md.; five daughters, Juanita Johnson of Halifax, Madella Luck of Java, Gladys Stephens of Vernon Hill, Brenda Stephens of Washington, D.C., and Karen Stephens of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother, Herman Henry of Java; two sisters, Leonia Thompson of Newark, N.J., and Arsia Barksdale of Chester, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Baptist Church by the Rev. John Chark. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Sidney Jay Carter, 76, 709 Betts St., died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 16, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Monroe Carter and Fannie Wilson Carter.
He was married
to Florence Fuller Carter, who predeceased him.
Survivors include five daughters, Shirley Clark of Washington, D.C., Mae B. Carter of East Orange, N.J., and Beatrice Scott, Josephine Miller and Jeanette Walker, all of Danville; six sons, Raymond Carter of Greenville, S.C., Napoleon Carter of Atlanta, Waddell Jones of Washington, D.C., and John Carter, Ivey Carter and Brian Carter, all of Danville; a brother, Johnnie Carter of Ringgold; two sisters, Mayola McCain of Ringgold and Otea Ferrell of Landover, Md.; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Ringgold, by the Rev. Howard Graves. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Jeanette Walker, 1227 Claiborne St.

Alma Walters
Alma Hall Walters, 88, 224 Courtland St., died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a year of declining health and four days in the hospital.
Born June 23, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Edward Kyle Hall and Cordelia Evans Hall.
On Easter Sunday of 1928, she was married
to Theodore Vance Walters, who died May 4, 1958.
She had lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville.
After 40 years of service, she was retired from Dan River Inc., No. 4 weave.
She was a charter member of Glenwood Baptist Church prior to becoming a member of Shermont Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Clyde L. Walters of Ringgold; a daughter, Lillian Adele W. Motley of Post Falls, Idaho; two sisters, Martha H. Green and Kathryn H. Willis, both of Danville; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Otis L. Hall, Bennie S. Hall, Otis E. Hall and Julian L. Hall; and a sister, Madie H. Tanksley.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Bill Soyars.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of her son, Clyde L. Walters, 3471 Tom Fork Road, off of the Ringgold Road.
Ted 'Billy' Mays
FOREST - Ted Parrish "Billy" Mays, 60, died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, at his residence.
Born June 9, 1937, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charles Perkins Mays and Gladys Newbern Mays, who survives.
He was married
for 30 years to Mary Sheets Mays, who survives.
He was a member of Brookhill Wesleyan Church and an employee of Gunnoe's Sausage Company for 25 years.
In addition to his mother of Chatham and wife of Forest, survivors include a son, Robert Parrish Mays of Forest; a daughter, Susan Mays Wright of Bedford; four brothers, Charles W. Mays of Danville, Carl P. Mays of Chatham, Harvey M. Mays of Goode and Jackie N. Mays of Forest; five sisters, Fannie M. Ragsdale of Blairs, Sarah M. Farson of Vernon Hill and Joyce M. East, Ellen M. Brumfield and Dale M. Farmer, all of Chatham.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Faye Mays and Betty M. Yeatts.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Brookhill Wesleyan Church, Forest, by the Rev. Wes Gillespie. Burial will be in Virginia Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Sunday at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford, and other times at the residence.
Mary Price
CALLANDS - Mary Sue Harris Price died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997.
Born Feb. 8, 1923, in Virginia, she was a laborer for American Furniture Co.
Survivors include a daughter, Gladys P. Watkins of Axton; a son, John A. Price of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; a sister, Ruby H. Price of Callands; three brothers, Clarence Harris and Ervin Harris, both of Callands, and Charlie Harris of Martinsville; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m., Monday at Tarpley's Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert L. Divins Jr. Burial will be in Schoolfield Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Callands.
