Paris Helms
Funeral services for Paris Julian Helms, 78, 841 Mt. Hermon Circle, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at the Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ramond Goad and the Rev. Martin Brumfield. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at his residence.
Born April 16, 1919, in Patrick County, he was a son of John W. Helms and Dolly Radford Helms.
On June 25, 1946, he was married
to Virginia Dalton Helms, who survives.
He worked for the state highway department and retired after 30 years on April 1, 1981.
He served in the U.S. Army, and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sisters, Eunice Clemmons of Floyd, Iren Garnard of Roanoke and Lilly Agnue of Stuart; and four brothers, J.D. Helms of Danville, Clyde Helms of Pamplin, and Elmer Helms and Willard Helms, both of Stuart.
The family will receive friends at other times at the residence.
James Hooker Sr.
James Howard Hooker Sr., 55, 1786 Blair Loop Road, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at his residence.
Born Feb. 2, 1942, in Danville, he was a son of Dora Elma Spangler Hooker and David Harrison Hooker.
He was married
to Sally Payne Hooker.
He was a self employed construction subcontractor.
He was of the Baptist faith, and had served in the National Guard.
Survivors include a son, James Howard Hooker Jr. of Danville; a daughter, Kathy L. Martin of Danville; four sisters, Lottie Meade, Shirley Bray, Laura Robertson and Ilene Underwood, all of Danville; two brothers, David Oneal Hooker of Danville and Henry Hooker of Corning, Calif.; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Wayne Wallace. Burial will be in the Hooker Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his son, 1535 Westover Drive.
Barksdale 'Crook' Hubbard
NATHALIE - Barksdale "Crook" Hubbard, 74, 1034 Pumping Hill Road, died Sunday night, Dec. 7, 1997, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Born June 11, 1923, in Halifax County, he was a son of Harold Hubbard and Bessie Hubbard.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by a daughter, Lelia Hubbard of Gretna.
He was predeceased by a sister, Elma Pannell; and three brothers, Eddie, Elie and Floyd Hubbard.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at Hickory Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. A. L. Dean. Burial will be in Hermosia cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Maxine and Lorrence Boyd, 1084 Alex Lane, Nathalie.
Argene Payne
Argene Harris Payne, 87, of 303 Third Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born July 16, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Edward Harris and Mary Liles Harris.
On March 23, 1937, she was married
to O.M. Payne Sr.
She worked as a correctional officer for Danville City Jail for 25 years.
She was a graduate of Schoolfield High School. In 1954, she graduated from John Wesley Bible Seminary in Greensboro, N.C., with a degree in ministry.
She was very active in Senior Citizens and received numerous awards. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge and also a charter member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church.
She had a talent for wood carving.
Survivors include a sister, Mozelle Harris Miller of the residence; six step-daughters, Mabel P. Everette, Margaret Day and Marie Fusco, all of Danville, Lizzie Grubbs of Ringgold, Judith Holder of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Nancy Swann of Blanch, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Third Avenue Church by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at her sister's residence, 303 Third Ave.

Nellie Stone
NEW YORK - Nellie Stone, 55, formerly of Chatham, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Westchester Medical Center in New York.
Born May 8, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ezekeil Whittle and Eliza Hubbard.
She was an employee of the New York City Housing Authority as a bookkeeper.
Survivors include a son, Jay Stone of New York; and a daughter, Loretta Denise Stone of New York.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Wilson Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Terry Echols. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Kermit Waller, 581 Hodnett Mill Road, Chatham.
William White
CHATHAM - William Boyd White, 68, 413 Rison St., died Saturday morning, Dec. 6, 1997, at his residence.
Born July 4, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Henry White and Edna Carter White.
He was married
to Mary E. White, who survives.
He was a retired employee of Lane Company, and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Jack Harris of Dallas, William White Jr. of Maryland, Earnest White of Alexandria and Curtis White of Bronx, N.Y.; four daughters, Willie Mae Woods of Dry Fork, Rosa Harris of Alexandria, Evelena Farmer of Salisbury, N.C., and Donna Smith of Richmond; two sisters, Mary Liza Pannell and Elnora Craft, both of Chatham; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Frances Hairston. Burial will be in the Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church cemetery in Chatham.
Robert Moxley Jr.
ROANOKE - Robert Bruce Moxley Jr., 68, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born March 30, 1929, in Danville, he was the son of Robert B. Moxley and Annie E. Bailey Moxley.
He was a salesman for Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company for several years.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Moxley White and Sandra Moxley Oakes, both of Danville; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday at Moffet Memorial Baptist Church Chapel by the Rev. Lee Ellision.
Nannie Talley
Nannie May Talley, 83, 2526 North Main St., died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born May 31, 1914, in Virgilina, she was a daughter of John William Talley and Daisy Forlines Talley.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, and was a retired registered nurse after many years at Danville Memorial Hospital and Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Survivors include two nephews, Graham Talley of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and Ray W. Talley of Virgilina.
She was predeceased by three sisters and a brother.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. in Oak Ridge cemetery in South Boston by the Rev. David Gray.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Lewis Williams Jr.
DRY FORK - Lewis Williams Jr., 67, 248 WI Powell Road, died Monday evening, Dec. 8, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham, N.C., after three months of declining health.
Born Sept. 11, 1930, in Hudson, N.J., he was a son of Lewis Williams Sr., and Hilda Burnett Williams.
He was married
to Shelby Jean Weatherford Williams, who survives.
A resident of Pittsylvania County for most of his life, he was employed by Dan River, Inc., as a loom fixer and maintenance person.
During the Korean conflict, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was of the Christian faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Williams of the residence; three brothers, John Williams and Paul Williams, both of Danville, and Bobby Williams of Clarksville, Tenn.; and two sisters, Francis Collins of Danville and Doris Williams of Ringgold.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Lennie Doss. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
