Odell Gwynn

Odell Gwynn, 75, 818 Stokes St., died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at his residence.

Born July 24, 1922, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Thomas Gwynn and Burlie Wimple Gwynn.

He was married to Mary Turner Gwynn, who survives.

He was an employee in the housekeeping department for Suffolk County, N.Y., for many years and served in the U. S. Army during World War II.

Other survivors include three sons, Charles Gwynn of Brentwood, N.Y., and Glenn R. Gwynn of Amityville, N.Y., and Elder Brodie G. Pinchback of Danville; four stepsons, Anthony McLaughlin and Lacy McLaughlin of Reidsville, N.C., Grayling McLaughlin of Lillington, N.C., and Daryl McLaughlin of Macon, Georgia; four stepdaughters, Vivian Jeffers and Pauline Williams of Reidsville, Vernell Watlington of Burlington, N.C., and Paulette Jones of Macon, Georgia; one sister, Estelle Eubanks of Amityville, N.Y.; one brother Elijah Gwynn of Ruffin, N.C., plus grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Blackwell Baptist Church by Everett Dickerson. Interment will be at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Alice Marshall

Alice Ferrell Marshall, 83, 239 Arnett Blvd., died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.

Born Feb. 19, 1914, in Danville, she was a daughter of Arthur James Ferrell and Maggie Evans Ferrell.

On Jan. 4, 1958, she was married to Walter Royce Marshall, who died June 23, 1997.

She lived her life in the Danville area, where prior to her retirement, she worked for Dan River, Inc.

She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, C. Spencer Allen of New Bern, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Shirley H. Allen of Danville; three stepsons, Frank R. Marshall of Springfield, Mass., and Richard G. Marshall of Ocala, Fla., and Walter R. Marshall of California; a sister, Betty Ferrell Slayton of Roanoke; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren, 14 step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren; and two nieces and a nephew.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Michael Campbell. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.

Homer May

Homer May, 89, of Ivydale, W.Va., died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at his residence.

He was born in Ivydale on March 7, 1908.

He was married to Vera May of Yanceyville, N.C., who survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Arlie May of Cutoff, La., and James May and Lantie May, both of Danville; a brother, Foster May, and a sister, Goldie Cottrell, both of Madison, W.Va.; six stepchildren; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 3 in Arnoldsburg, W.Va., by Rev. Dewey Tanner. Interment followed in the Jarvis cemetery in Ivydale.

Robert Bruce Moxley Jr.

Robert Bruce Moxley Jr., 68, of Roanoke, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Born in Danville on March 30, 1929, he was the son of Robert B. and Annie E. Bailey Moxley.

He was a salesman with Brown and Williamson Tobacco Co. for several years.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by two daughters, Lisa Moxley White and Sandra Moxley Oakes, both of Danville, and three grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory.

Shirley Ann Scism

Shirley Ann Scism, 65, Charleston, Illinois, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois.

Born Sept. 10, 1932, in Roanoke, she was the daughter of Landon and Ella Mae Fitzgerald Chilton.

On April 17, 1951, she was married to Thomas E. Scism, who survives.

Other survivors include her mother, Ella Mae Chilton of Danville; two sons, Landon E. Scism of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. and Bruce Scism of Charleston, Ill.; one daughter, Pamela Garcier; a sister, Betty Brown George of Mount Airy, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her father.

She was a retired teacher, having been employed the last seven years at the Kansas Treatment and Learning Center of the E.I.A.S.E.

She was a member of the National Education Association.

She had been active in Democratic politics in Illinois and North Carolina since 1970.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston by the Rev. Susan Reichenberg.

Interment will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Fairview cemetery in Roanoke.

Walter Barrick Jr.

A memorial service for Walter E. Barrick Jr., 77, of 170 Westminster Court, will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Tom Tunstall. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery. A Masonic graveside rite will be conducted by Roman Eagle Lodge 122.

He died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at his residence.

Born March 7, 1920, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Walter E. Barrick Sr. and Mattie Lea Squire Barrick.

He was married to Josephine Campbell Long Barrick, who predeceased him.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and then the U.S. Air Force, in which he was a P-51 flight instructor during World War II. He was a retired colonel from the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

He was a local businessman in insurance before becoming the Danville magistrate, where he served for 14 years before retiring. He also served on the Danville City Council for four years.

He was of the Christian faith. He was a member of the Masons Roman Eagle Lodge 122, where he was a member for 50 years and a past Master of the lodge.

Survivors include two sons, John W. Barrick of Feura Bush, N.Y., and W. Eddie Barrick of Danville; two daughters, JoAnne B. Mahan of Danville and Sandra B. Bierman of Plano, Texas; two sisters, Dorothy Lea Williams of Richmond and Anna B. Boger of Fort Worth, Texas; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Annie Brown

Annie Lee Perkins Brown, 91, 314 Church St., died Monday morning, Dec. 8, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 8, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Daniel Perkins and Annie Brown Perkins.

She was married to George Thomas Brown Sr., who died Aug. 20, 1985.

A life long resident of Pittsylvania County and Danville, she was a homemaker and a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Hunt of Danville; two sisters, Lucille Calhoun of Westover Hills and Mary Patton of Fox Hollow Farms; a brother, Lewis Perkins of Keysville; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, George Thomas Brown Jr.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Evans and the Rev. Michael Campbell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

James Brumfield

WARRENTON - James Gilbert Brumfield, 63, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at Fauquier Hospital.

Born April 19, 1934, in Durham County, N.C., he was a son of John William Brumfield and Lucy Stultz Brumfield.

He held a Master's Degree in education from the University of Virginia. He came to Fauquier County as pastor of Marshall United Methodist Church in Marshall. He later became an educator in Fauquier County Schools, becoming superintendent of instruction and retiring from the position of deputy superintendent.

He was elected a member of Fauquier County Board of Supervisors representing Center District. He served as chairman of the Board of Supervisors from 1990 to 1994, and was to begin serving as chairman again in 1998.

He was a charter member of Marshall Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. He was a long time member of Marshall Ruritan Club and a member of Warrenton-Fauquier Optimist Club.

He was a former member of the board of directors of George Mason University. He had served on the Economic Development Task Force for the former Vint Hills Farms Station, and had been appointed by the Governor to serve on the State Highway Safety Commission.

He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Vickie Russell of Nokesville; three sons, Scott Brumfield of Warrenton, John Brumfield of Oakton and Tim Brumfield of Charlottesville; three stepchildren, David Rogers of Remington, Mark Rogers of Tucson, Ariz., and Miriam Pearson of Warrenton; a brother, Albert T. Lewis of Danville; and nine grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Warrenton cemetery by the Rev. J. Richard Winter.

The family will receive friends 5-9 tonight at Fauquier High School Auditorium, with a funeral service beginning at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Carl Schmahl.

Raymond Carlton

RINGGOLD - Raymond William Carlton, 70, 265 Cedar Road, died Monday morning, Dec. 8, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following several years of declining health.

Born March 5, 1927, in Jeffries, he was the son of Marcus S. Carlton and Helen Coleman Carlton.

On May 10, 1968, he was married to Irene Mattingly Carlton, who survives.

A resident of the Ringgold area for most of his life, he was of the Baptist faith.

Until his retirement in February 1990, he worked for 45 years for Dan River Inc., where he had been a loom fixer in No. 4B Weave.

He served as a Torpedoman 1st Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Patricia Pruitt of Lynchburg and Alisa Arduca of Danville; a son, Michael Payne of Danville; three stepdaughters, Sue Southard of Brosville, Glenna McNeal of Danville and Pam Pierce of Jonesboro, Ga.; two stepsons, Fred Elkins of Brosville and Richard Elkins of Danville; two grandchildren and 17 step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jimmy Burke. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
