George Lipford
George Edward Lipford, 61, 623 Berryman Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born April 12, 1936, in Dry Fork, he was the son of Martha Lipford and George Lipford, Sr., who survives.
He was married
to Josephine Henderson Lipford, who survives.
He was employed by Dimon Inc. until his health failed him.
In addition to his wife and father, both of Danville, survivors include four sons, Herbert Henderson, Sidney Henderson and Anthony Lipford, all of Danville, and Winston Henderson of Mt. Vernon, Ga.; a daughter, Gloria Schoefield of Danville; a sister, Margaret Jones of Danville; and a host of grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Saturday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. Letcher Coleman. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Dewey Minter
MARTINSVILLE - Dewey E. Minter, 80, 241 Woodlawn Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond.
Born March 15, 1917, in Henry County, he was a son of Posey L. Minter and Betty Richardson Minter.
He was married
to Winifred Robertson Minter, who survives.
He was a retired brick mason. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Chatham Heights Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Phillip Anthony Minter of Harrisburg, Pa., and Kimball Allen Minter of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Elizabeth M. Thornton of Martinsville, Dorothy M. Clark of Roanoke, Irene M. Adkins of Collinsville and Helen M. Wright of Birmingham, Ala.; and three brothers, Clifford L. Minter, Billy R. Minter and Jackie L. Minter, all of Martinsville.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday at Chatham Heights Baptist Church by the Rev. Bob Bailey and the Rev. James R. Cole. Interment will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at McKee-Stone Funeral Chapel.
Lillian Shelton
Lillian Dix Shelton, 89, 423 Chestnut St., died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 4, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 6, 1908, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of William Dix and Maggie Purnell Dix.
She was married
to Joe A. Shelton, who predeceased her.
A resident of Salem and Danville for most of her life, she was of the Baptist faith.
She was employed as a cafeteria worker for Roanoke College.
Survivors include a son, Giles F. Dix of Danville; a brother, Woodrow W. Dix of Danville; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.
A graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday at Cedar Lawn Burial Park in Salem by the Rev. Jack Robertson.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her son, 141 Sunset Drive.
Hazel Sloan
Hazel Smith Slaughter Sloan, 73, 1236 West Main St., Apt. 211, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 3, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 17, 1924, in Danville, she was the daughter of Charles A. Smith and Nannie Williams Smith.
She was married
to Aubrey Sloan, who died in 1979.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she worked for Dan River Inc.
Survivors include three sons, Steve Slaughter, Jerry Slaughter and David Slaughter, all of Danville; a daughter, Cheryl Meadows of Ringgold; a brother, Gray Smith of Moncure, N.C.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Garland Walker. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her son, Steve Slaughter, 253 Rocking Chair Road, off of Orphanage Road.
Ollie V. Baisey
Ollie V. Baisey, 107, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, in Tampa, Fla., where she had been a resident for 25 years.
She was born in Scottsville, Va., on March 23, 1890.
She was predeceased by her husband, W. N. Baisey.
Survivors include a son, Rev. J. Harvey Saunders, of Dallas, Texas, and a daughter-in-law, Edna F. Saunders, of Danville; five grandchildren, one of whom is Wesley Saunders of Danville; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and member of North Main Baptist Church. In recent years, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Brandon, Fla.
Graveside services were held Dec. 6 by her son, the Rev. J. Harvey Saunders.

Ruby Cassada
Ruby Scruggs Cassada, 89, of 145 Golf Club Road, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at Piney Forest Health Care Center, after several years of declining health.
Born July 24, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Richard Scruggs and Rosa Shelton Scruggs.
On Nov. 20, 1926, she was married
to Lonnie T. Cassada, who died Nov. 29, 1959.
A resident of the Danville and Pittsylvania County area for her entire life, she worked for Health Tex Inc. for 16 years before her retirement.
She was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia C. Jones of Danville; a brother, Morris Scruggs of Danville; three granddaughters, Diane Jones, Pat Wonner and Betty Crane, all of Danville; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Don Davidson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Joyvonne Ann Clark
Joyvonne Ann Clark, 21/2 months, 490 Old Mount Cross Road, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 14, 1997, in Danville, she was the daughter of Rodney L. Clark and Gaynell Clark.
Other survivors include three sisters, Lekiah Witcher, Latoya Clark and Rodrica Clark all of Danville.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park by Bishop Fred B. Kidd.

Robert Edmonds
Robert Lee Edmonds, 97, 521 Harrison St., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Stratford Health Center.
Born May 12, 1900, in Danville, he was the son of Sal Edmonds.
He was a textile worker for Dan River Inc., and was a member of First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his son, Joseph L. Edmonds, Sr., of Richmond.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church by the Rev. J.P. Griffith. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The body may be viewed 4 to 8 tonight at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

Annie Ferrell
Annie Ball Ferrell, 91, 2344 Riverside Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center after two years of declining health.
Born May 23, 1906, in Danville, she was the daughter of John T. Ball and Lizzie Nichols Ball.
She was married
to John Baxter Ferrell, who died Dec. 14, 1973.
A lifelong resident of Danville, she had worked at Danville Knitting Mill.
She was a member of Westover Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Justine Barber of Danville, Francine Martin of Fort Worth, Texas, and Anita Avery of Flat Rock, N.C.; a brother, John L. Ball of Danville; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. and the Rev. Wayne Martin. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
