Donald Mutter
Donald Elwood Mutter, 65, 2849 Blairmont Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after suddenly being brought to the emergency room.
Born Sept. 11, 1932, in Russel County, he was a son of Roosevelt Mutter and Amilee Johnson Mutter.
On Nov. 10, 1979, he was married
to Brenda Owen Mutter, who survives.
He had lived in Warsaw before moving to Danville 17 years ago.
He had retired from the Virginia Department of Corrections as a superintendent with 23 years of service. He held the superintendent's position in several correctional camps throughout the state.
He was a member of the Swansonville United Methodist Church and a member of American Legion Post 325.
During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Donna M. Wilkins and Tammy M. Thrift, both of Warsaw, and Judy M. Barley of Ringgold and Kimberley S. Minnich of California, Md.; two brothers, Holly Mutter of Roanoke and Robert Mutter of Lebanon; a sister, Elizabeth M. Taylor of Lebanon; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Linwood Daniel. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, where military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, 2849 Blairmont Drive off of Rt. 29 North.
Matthew Russell
WINCHESTER - Matthew Griffin Russell, 128 Country Club Circle, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
Born Nov. 20, 1997, at the University of Virginia Hospital, he was a son of Lantz Russell and Connie Moore Russell, who survive.
In addition to his parents, survivors include a sister, Tori Russell of the residence; two brothers, Jacob Tolley and Logan Tolley, both of the residence; his maternal grandparents, Jerry and Trudi Griffin of Danville; and his paternal grandparents, Jerome Russell of Boyce and Sharon Russell of Stephens City.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home in Berryville by Dr. William E. Ingram. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery in Berryville.
The family will receive friends a hour prior to the service time at the funeral home.
Ernest Brandon
Ernest E. Brandon, 82, 2314 Franklin Turnpike, formerly of 407 Airport Drive, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following several years of declining health.
Born Jan. 19, 1915, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Hezekiah T. Brandon and Cornelia Holt Brandon.
On June 6, 1936, he was married
to Orphelina Fowlkes Brandon, who survives.
A resident of the Danville area for most of his life, he owned and operated Airport Sunoco for 30 years.
He was a member of Blanch Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Helen B. Thomasson of Danville; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his son, E. Maynard Brandon.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m., Thursday at the chapel of Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. J.B. Baldridge. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 121 Wheatly Road.
Ruth Cardwell
RINGGOLD - Ruth Ellen Cardwell, 16, 2701 Milton Highway, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, on route 726 in Pittsylvania County in an auto accident.
Born April 12, 1981, in Roanoke, she was the daughter of Daniel Hayes Cardwell and Laurie Rawls Cardwell, who survive.
She had lived in Chase City prior to moving to Pittsylvania County, where she was a sophomore at Dan River High School.
She was of the Christian faith.
In addition to her mother of the residence and her father of Floyd County, survivors include three brothers, Joshua Aaron Cardwell, Joseph Phillip Cardwell and Daniel Seth Cardwell, all of the residence.
She was predeceased by a brother, Joshua David Cardwell.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m., Friday at Ringgold Christian Fellowship Church. Burial will be in Sunset Hill cemetery in Burkeville.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the church, and other times at the residence of Mr. &. Mrs. Randy Glasscock, 501 Sunshine Drive, Ringgold, off of Milton Highway.

Mary Emerson
Mary Evelyn Grimes Emerson, 74, 533 Gemstone Lane, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center following six years of declining health.
Born May 15, 1923, in Danville, she was the daughter of Frank Grimes and Dore Deane Toler Grimes.
She was married
to John Thomas Emerson, who died March 2, 1985.
A life-long resident of Danville, she attended Emmanuel Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Warner Lee Collins of Callands, Nancy Carolyn Tate of Keeling and Deborah Kay Sadler of the residence; two sons, John Thomas Emerson Jr. and Garland Ralph Emerson, both of Danville; a brother, Buster Lee Grimes of Danville; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m., Friday at the chapel of Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. Kendall Jenkins. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Lois Hudgins
BRACEY - Lois Jannett Seamster Hudgins, 51, 199 Nellie Jones Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond because of injuries from an auto accident.
Born Aug. 13, 1946, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Cabell James Seamster and Doris Elizabeth Crowder Seamster, who survives.
On July 10, 1976, she was married
to David Lee Hudgins, who survives.
She had lived her life in Danville and South Hill, and worked as a C.P.A. for Creedle, Jones & Alga Accounting Firm in South Hill.
She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include a son, David "Dave" James Hudgins of the residence; a daughter, Dana Elizabeth Hudgins of the residence; a stepdaughter, Lynn Farley of Ringgold; a brother, Leonard Ray Seamster of Danville; a sister, Dorothy Seamster Pruitt of Madison Heights; and two step-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Roy James Seamster.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m., Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Michael Campbell. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Ida James
DRY FORK - Ida Bell James, 66, 15204 Mount Cross Road, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 1997, at Martinsville Regional Medical Center in Martinsville.
A native of Pittsylvania County, she was born Feb. 4, 1929.
Retired, she had been a textile worker for Dan River Mills.
She was a member of Ross Street Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, George R. Day of Chatham and Ernest E. Day of Callands; five sisters, Evangelist Ella M. Hairston of New York, Evangelist Dorothy Moore, Mary G. Day and Janie M. William, all of Danville, and Margie D. Jones of Axton; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Friday at Ross Street Seventh Day Adventist Church by the Rev. Derrick Adams. Burial will be in Union Hall Baptist Church cemetery.
There will be a viewing for family and friends from 4-8 p.m., Thursday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will be at the residence of her sister, Evangelist Dorothy Moore, 219 E. Thomas Street.
Justin McCubbins
Justin Carter McCubbins, 1127 Loomfixer Lake Road, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 24, 1997, in Danville, he was the son of Ralph Lee McCubbins Jr. and Frances Boatwright McCubbins, who survive.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include his paternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Ralph L. McCubbins Sr. of Axton and Mr. & Mrs. Jerry L. Inman of Danville; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Robert K. Boatwright of Richmond and Donna W. Boatwright of Richmond.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m., Friday in Swansonville United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Linwood Daniel and the Rev. Jeff Cannon.

Edgar Neal
Edgar Hughey Neal, 80, 304 Church St., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following several years of declining health and eight days in the hospital.
Born April 27, 1917, in Lynchburg, he was the son of Less Neal and Kate Neal Neal.
He was married
to Versie Lawless Neal, who died April 10, 1997.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he was employed by Fieldcrest Mills Inc., for many years.
He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include two stepsons, Kermit R. Rakes of Pelham, N.C., and Donald M. Rakes of Kernersville, N.C.; a sister, Fannie N. Whitlow of Danville; six step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Michael Campbell. Burial will be in Sycamore Baptist Church cemetery in Stuart.
