Perry Hudson
Perry Wayne Hudson, 60, of 2237 Coleman Drive, Alton, died Sunday morning at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 9, 1937, in Danville, he was a son of Joseph Clifton Hudson and Nettie Foster Hudson.
Most of his life was spent in Alton. He was employed by the Advance Security Service as a guard at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.
He was a member of the Ephesus Baptist Church and the Woodmen of the World.
He is survived by three brothers, J.C. Hudson Jr. and Warner Lee Hudson, both of Danville, and Donald Foster Hudson of Alton.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ephesus Baptist Church by the Rev. Leonard Watlington. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the residence of his brother, Warner Lee Hudson, 148 Naples St.
Julian Lovelace
Julian Wallace Lovelace, 73, of 482 Cedarbrook Drive, died Saturday night, Nov. 22, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born on July 20, 1924, in Schoolfield, Virginia, a son of John Wesley Lovelace and Roxie Gregory Lovelace.
On March 20, 1948, he was married
to the former Sarah Emerson.
Mr. Lovelace was educated in the Danville Public Schools and a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy.
He was formerly employed by the Danville Police Department and later with the Danville City Sheriff's Department for more than 15 years until his retirement in 1987.
Mr. Lovelace was a member of the Stokesland Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon, past president of the men's Sunday school class and served as assistant church treasurer.
In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a son, John D. Lovelace of Midlothian; a daughter, Julia L. Ingram of Danville; three grandchildren, Elizabeth I. Pulley of Blairs, Meredith A. Ingram of Danville, and J. Patrick Lovelace of Midlothian; and a brother, James N. Lovelace of Richmond.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Don Frank. Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be sent to the Danville Life Saving Crew.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and the family will receive friends at the residence, 482 Cedarbrook Drive.
Vernon Owens
Vernon Blake Owens, 60, of 1336 Vandola Church Road, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born Oct. 1, 1937, in Kentucky, he was the son of Buddy Keltner and Beulah Owens Keltner.
He was married
to Glenda Owens, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Danville area, where he was employed by Overnite Transportation Co. as a supervisor.
He was a member of Vandola Baptist Church.
He served in the U.S. Navy for four years.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his father of Chesapeake, survivors include five sons, Timothy Lewis, Thomas Lewis, S. Jason Lewis, V. Todd Owens and Eric B. Owens, all of Danville; a daughter, Joan L. Mills of Roanoke; a sister, Roxanne Peterson of Virginia Beach; and seven grandchildren.
In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by a granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, by Dr. LeRoy Clack. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, and at other times at the residence of his son, Timothy Lewis, 140 Debbie Lane.
Joseph Arnold Sr.
Joseph A. Arnold Sr., 67, died on Sunday, Nov. 23, 1997, in Alexandria after a long illness.
A native of Danville, he left the area in 1950. He was an Army Veteran, serving from 1950 to 1952. He settled in Northern Virginia in 1953. He was an auto parts salesman for Belvoir Auto Parts in Alexandria.
Survivors include his wife, Inez V. Arnold; a son, Joseph A. Arnold Jr. of Alexandria; a daughter, Denise A. Fones of Charleston, S.C.; five sisters, Clara Schott of Kansas City, Mo., and Gladys Moore and Evelyn Hoover, both of Danville, and Tiney Hill and Winnie Smith, both of Springfield; and two granddaughters, Sarah and Karen Fones.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Noah and Thomas Arnold; and a sister, Annie Hoover.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, Alexandria, at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Comfort cemetery, Alexandria.

Mary Emerson
Mary Evelyn Grimes Emerson, 74, 533 Gemstone Lane, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center following six years of declining health.
Born May 15, 1923, in Danville, she was the daughter of Frank Grimes and Dore Deane Toler Grimes.
She was married
to John Thomas Emerson, who died March 2, 1985.
A life-long resident of Danville, she attended Emmanuel Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Warner Lee Collins of Callands, Nancy Carolyn Tate of Keeling and Deborah Kay Sadler of the residence; two sons, John Thomas Emerson Jr. and Garland Ralph Emerson, both of Danville; a brother, Buster Lee Grimes of Danville; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete with Barker Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Ruby Ferguson
RINGGOLD - Ruby Bennett Ferguson, 97, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Martinsville Health and Rehabilitation Center following two months of declining health.
Born Aug. 24, 1900, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William H. Bennett and Martha Dodson Bennett.
She was married
to J. Archie Ferguson, who died in July 1985.
A life long resident of the Ringgold community, she was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church and the Joy Club.
Survivors include a son, James A. Ferguson of Ringgold; a brother, Ernest Bennett of Ringgold; three sisters, Dorothy Dyer of N. Augusta, S.C., and Mary Haynes of Charlottesville and Janie Myers of Ringgold; a grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by Percy Bennett, C. Roger Bennett, Lacy Bennett, Walter Bennett and Horace Bennett.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Carl Burger. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Martin Hyler
CASCADE - Martin W. Hyler, 79, 2399 Gravel Hill Road, died early Monday morning, Nov. 24, 1997, at his residence after a decline in health since September.
Born Oct. 16, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Thomas Hyler and Minnie Childress Hyler.
On Feb. 4, 1939, he was married
to Gatrel Barber Hyler, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
A resident of Pittsylvania County for most of his life, he enjoyed crafts and other wood working activities. He had worked for Fieldcrest Mills and for John Smith & Son Construction Company in Eden, N.C., in addition to farming.
He was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, where he was a trustee and a member of the men's club. He was also the sexton and caretaker for the church property and the cemetery.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Minnie Joyce Corbin of Ruffin, N.C.; three sons, Martin L. Hyler and Merchant L. "Smokey" Hyler, both of Eden, N.C., and Ricky Wayne Hyler of Ruffin, N.C.; two brothers, Henry Hyler of Pelham, N.C., and Everett Hyler of Cascade; two sisters, Ray Teague of Providence, N.C., and Dillard Greathouse of Sedro Woolley, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Loy Kennedy. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post 325 Honor Guard.

George Martin
GRETNA - George Anderson Martin, 81, 265 Valley Road, died Monday morning, Nov. 24, 1997, at his residence.
Born Nov. 10, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charlie Martin and Missie Berger Martin.
He was married
to Ruth E. Martin, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a retired farmer, and was a member of Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the board of deacons, trustee board and senior choir. He was also a past church treasurer and secretary.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Garry C. Martin of Gretna; a daughter, Elaine M. Berger of Gretna; a brother, Hampton Martin of Gretna; two sisters, Cora M. Clark of Gretna and Clara B. Johnson of Pittsville; three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Obie Martin; and three sisters, Daisy Davis, Dorothy Dabney and Ruth Roher.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Piney Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Isaac Monroe. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
