Robbie Johnson
Robbie Harris Johnson, 89, of Birnam Wood, Danville, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 22, 1908 in Geneva County, Alabama, she was a daughter of John Joseph Harris and Mary Jane Lister Harris.
She was married
to Othar Leon Johnson, who is predeceased.
She was a life-long member of First Baptist Church in Coffee Springs, Alabama. She was very active in her church and community until moving to Danville to live with her daughter in 1989.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Hendrickson of Danville and Mary Veazey of Houston; a sister, Mamie Ausley of Leesburg, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Hazel Johnson Howell, in 1965; a son, James Harry Johnson, in 1979; two sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Searcy Funeral Home Chapel in Enterprise, Alabama, by the Rev. Donald Kruse. Interment will follow at Meadowlawn cemetery in Enterprise.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Anne Perkins
Anne Kent Thompson Perkins, 75, died Friday evening, Nov. 14, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was born on Sept. 11, 1922, in Halifax County, a daughter of John Samuel Thompson and Hester Kent Richie Thompson.
Mrs. Perkins was formerly employed with H.P. Green Shoe Company and was later associated with Sears Roebuck and Company for more than 40 years. She was a member of the Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church, Circle #6 and the WMS. She was also a member of the Sears Retirement Club.
Mrs. Perkins was married
to Franklin Earl Perkins, Sr. on Oct. 24, 1942. Mr. Perkins died June 13, 1995.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia P. Dalton of Danville; a son, Frank E. Perkins Jr. of Jacksonville, N.C.; six grandchildren, Leslie Dalton, Kristen Dalton, Patrick Dalton, Jessica Perkins, Jim Perkins and Julie Perkins; three sisters: Sallie T. Adkins of Reidsville, N.C., Ada T. Bennett of Ringgold, and Virginia T. Walker of Providence, N.C.; four brothers, James Thompson of Ringgold, Johnnie Thompson of Richmond, William Thompson of Catlett, and Sam Thompson of Danville. She was also predeceased by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Cobb. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Dalton, 2189 Franklin Turnpike.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Moseley Memorial United Capital Fund, Berryman and Coloquohoun St., or to the Danville Life Saving Crew.
John Tarr
John Christopher Tarr, 34, of 265 Pineview Road, died suddenly Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at his residence.
Born March 5, 1963, in Steubenville, Ohio, he was the son of Durwood Ray Tarr and Margaret Cromer Tarr, who survive.
He was married
to Rebecca Ann Williams Tarr on Nov. 1, 1986.
He had lived in Stafford before moving to Danville eight years ago. He had worked for the City of Danville as a tree trimmer before retiring due to health reasons.
He was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his parents of Charlotte, N.C., and his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Marie Tarr and Janet Louise Tarr, both of the residence; and three sisters, Debra Lynn Alston of Danville, Carol J. Theodore of New Rumley, Ohio, and Stephanie A. Smith of Steubenville, Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Calvin Hines. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence, 265 Pineview Road, Lot 8, off of Route 58 west.
Lillie Clark
BLAIRS - Lillie Brooks Clark, 79, 480 Blairs Circle, died Sunday night, Nov. 16, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a year of declining health.
Born June 20, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Matthew Oakes and Lillian Walker Oakes.
She was married
to Frank James Brooks, who died in 1969. She was later married
on June 30, 1973, to John Elmer Clark, who survives.
She was a member of Blairs Baptist Church and the D.A.V. Auxiliary.
A life long resident of the Danville area, she had worked for Dan River Inc. for 27 years, and Faith Home for six years where she was a cook.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Shirley Wallace and Ruby Foster, both of Danville, and Margaret Hatchett of Blairs; two sons, William W. Brooks and Alvin R. Brooks, both of Blairs; a stepdaughter, Janet Carpenter of Richmond; a brother, Joseph Oakes of Blairs; 22 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Carson Dalton. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Wanda Jones
Wanda Keatts Jones, 29, of 431 Wyatt Drive, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after she fell ill at her home.
Born in Selma, Ala., on Oct. 25, 1968, she was the daughter of Bettie Walker Keatts and Burton E. Keatts Jr., who survive.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area.
She was an honor graduate of Tunstall High School and Danville Memorial School of Nursing. In high school, she was a member of F.B.L.A., F.H.A., Spanish Club and Beta Club. She was also a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where she was pianist, and she taught and directed Sunday School.
She had been a registered nurse since 1988 and worked in the critical care cardiac unit at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Survivors, in addition to her mother and father of Danville, include a son, Nicholas Adam Jones of the residence; a twin sister, Kimberly K. Agnor of Danville; a brother, Stephen E. Keatts of Roanoke; paternal grandmother, Clennie B. Keatts of Pelham, N.C.; and paternal great-grandmother, Pearl B. Keatts of Ringgold.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by Dr. Ross Range Sr., and the Rev. Delton Agnor. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday night from 7-8:30, and other times at the residence of her mother and father, 3440 Mount Cross Road, Danville, Va.
Fred Taylor
Fred Taylor, 62, of 803 North Main St., died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at Stratford Health Center.
Born March 19, 1935, in Roxboro, N.C., he was the son of Willie Arvin Taylor and Addie Oliver Taylor.
He was a member of Connolly United Methodist Church in Milton, N.C.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he was a floral designer for more than 40 years.
Survivors include two sisters, Barbara T. Oakes and Lavonne "Bonnie" Lawrence, both of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Darryl Campbell.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his sister, Lavonne Lawrence, 219 Greenwich Circle.
Myrtle Adkins
MARTINSVILLE - Myrtle Adkins, 76, formerly of 242 Swanson Ave., died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville.
Born March 16, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Woody Green Adkins and Lou Annie Smith Adkins.
She was married
to Gossie McKinley Adkins, who died Feb. 18, 1987.
She was a member of Museville Christian Church.
She is survived by her son, Tony M. Adkins of Danville; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in the Adkins Family cemetery in Callands by the Rev. Jerry Joseph.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her son, 570 Iris Lane, Lot 18.
Richard Cabaniss
CLOVER - Richard Garland Cabaniss, 57, 1115 Mt. Laurel Road, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at his residence.
Born Feb. 1, 1940, in Halifax County, he was a son of Richard Gold Cabaniss and Virginia Clark Cabaniss, who survives.
He was a member of Clover Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother of Clover, survivors include a daughter, Dolores C. Cole of South Boston; a son, Ricky L. Cabaniss of South Boston; a sister, Aggie C. Reynolds of Danville; a brother, Louis Cabaniss of Falls Church; and a grandson.
He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Cabaniss; and a sister, Alberta Cabaniss.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston by the Rev. Raymond Quick. Burial will be in Clover cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his mother, 1119 Mt. Laurel Road.
Margaret Lewis
BLAIRS - Margaret Young Lewis, 56, 133 Mack Road, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C., after eight years of declining health and six weeks in the hospital.
Born Aug. 31, 1941, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of Samuel Taylor Young and Rosa Bell Hammock Young.
On June 31, 1962, she was married
to Bill Ray Lewis Sr., who survives.
A resident of the Pittsylvania County and Danville area for most of her life, she had worked for Sara Lee Knitting for 10 years, prior to her decline in health.
She was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Rose Marie Dalton of Roanoke, Rita Lewis Marsh of Chatham and Rhonda Lewis Gauldin of Haw River, N.C.; a son, Billy Ray Lewis Jr. of the residence; four sisters, Rebecca Y. Hale of Pelham, N.C., and Virginia Ruth Chilton of Danville, Barbara Jean Fowler of Rockwell, N.C., and Kathey Abernathy of Lenoir, N.C.; three brothers, William "Pete" Young of Pelham, N.C., and David Young of Danville and Ronnie Lee Young of Charlotte, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Dallas Young and Garland Young; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Full Gospel Fellowship Church by the Rev. Roger Ewing and the Rev. Cable Cobbs. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
