Josephine Bigger Barber

The graveside service for Josephine Bigger Barber, 92, formerly of the Glenwood community, will be conducted 2 p.m., today from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Lee Ellison.

She died Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she resided after several years of declining health.

Born Oct. 8, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Richard Bigger and Ida Walker Bigger.

She lived her life in the Glenwood community, where she was a member of the Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church.

She worked at Dan River Inc., prior to her retirement.

She was married to Howard Clay Barber, who predeceased her.

She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Martha Chandler

Martha Jerrell Chandler, 91, 6 Elizabeth St. in the Edgewood Community, died Sunday night, Nov. 9, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center after a decline in health for a number of years.

Born Jan. 3, 1906, in Alamance County, N.C., she was a daughter of A.A. Jerrell and Maggie Black Jerrell.

She was married to Clarence Y. Chandler, who died in November of 1969.

For the past 80 years, she had been a resident of the Danville area.

She worked as a nurse aid at Danville Memorial Hospital for a number of years, and later worked as a nurse aid at Roman Eagle Memorial Home for 10 years.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in the Edgewood Community.

Survivors include a daughter, Edith Chandler Thornton of the residence; a son, Clarence Ray Chandler of Danville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Lessie Morris, who died in 1986.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday at Mt. View cemetery by the Rev. Richard Markham.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Helen Jaggers

WILMINGTON, Del. - The funeral for Helen Moulder Jaggers, 73, 58 Kathy Drive, Murray Manor 2, will be conducted 11 a.m., Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. John H. LaRue. Burial will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.

She died Friday, Nov. 7, 1997 at Christiana Hospital in Newark after three years of declining health.

Born July 9, 1924, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Paul Moulder and Pearl Dixon Moulder.

She was a former member of Schoolfield Baptist Church in Danville. She was a retired hair stylist and lived most of her life in Danville and Wilmington.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret L. Bonarigo of Wilmington.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Claude Meadows Jr.

CHATHAM - Claude Swanson Meadows Jr., 72, 3292 Payneton Road, died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 10, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Claude Swanson Meadows Sr., and Mary Ernes Meadows Hodnett.

He was married to Nancy Motley Meadows, who survives.

He was a member of Sheva Church of Christ, and he served in the military during World War II.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Claude Coleman Meadows and David Thomas Meadows, both of Chatham; four sisters, Elnor M. Betterton and Rebecca M. Montgomery, both of Chatham, Janie M. Shelton of Gretna and Nellie M. Marks of Richmond; a brother, Paul J. Meadows of Santee Cooper, S.C.; and seven grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Alton Meadows.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Wednesday at Sheva Church of Christ by the Rev. Larry L. Owen and the Rev. Jeff Hogan. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Pittsylvania County.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Harold Scearce

The funeral for Harold James Scearce, 73, of 120 Cheryl Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m., today from the Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Ray Humphries and the Rev. Myron Bruce. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

He died Saturday, Nov. 8, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 26, 1923, in Danville, he was the son of Grady Scearce and Carrie Walker Scearce.

Most of his life was spent in Danville. He retired from Dan River Inc., after 45 years of service.

He was a member of the Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he sang in the choir.

He is survived by five sisters, Aleese Barts, Barbara Crumpton, Charlene Wann, Margie Warren and Mildred Hague, all of Danville; and a brother, Lawrence Scearce of Danville.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Grady Scearce and John Scearce.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Aleese Barts, 120 Cheryl Drive.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dollie Setliff

Dollie Ingram Setliff, 92, died Monday, Nov. 10, at Centerclair Nursing Home in Lexington, N.C.

She was born to Omer and Amanda Snead Ingram on April 28, 1905, in Henry County, Virginia, the fifth of nine children.

She was married to David Lewis Setliff on April 5, 1924. She retired from Dan River Mills, and she co-owned and operated Setliff's Grocery with her husband and after his death until her health no longer permitted her to do so.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one child, one granddaughter and several siblings.

She is survived by two sons, Wayne Setliff of Winston Salem, N.C., and Hugh "Buddy" Setliff of Danville; four granddaughters, Pixie Skeen of Lexington, N.C., Madeline Setliff of Lexington, N.C., Vern A'Dare Shoaf of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Thanna Setliff of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers, Milliard Ingram of Axton and Leonard Ingram of Henry; one sister, Ella Shively of Ringgold; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 4 p.m., from the Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Gilmer Setliff. Interment will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday night from 7-8:30.

Flossie Thornton

Flossie Ludella Thornton, 65, 186 Delta Road, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 1997, at Stratford Health Center.

Born May 2, 1932, in Danville, she was the daughter of Victoria Thornton.

She was a homemaker, and she was a member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church and the Missionary of the church.

Survivors include two aunts, Beatrice Green and Dorothy Thornton, both of Danville; and two uncles, John Thornton of Philadelphia and Irvin Thornton of Columbus, Ohio.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at Jones Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Hayes McConnell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

A viewing for family and friends will be from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

The family is at the residence.

James VanOot

M. James VanOot, 84, 173 Grove Park Circle, died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997, at his residence.

Born Aug. 6, 1913, in Oswego, N.Y., he was the son of George VanOot and Emma Kirschner VanOot.

On Aug. 16, 1939, he was married to Marjorie Duffy VanOot, who survives.

He attended the public schools of Oswego, N.Y., and was a graduate of State University of New York at Oswego and earned a master's degree in vocational education from Cornell University.

He served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following the war, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve for 20 years and retired with the rank of lieutenant commander.

He had been a resident of Danville since 1936 and was a teacher at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, George Washington High School, Danville Technical Institute and the branch of Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Danville. In 1975, he retired from Danville Community College as chairman of the Engineering and Technology Division.

He was a member of West Main Baptist Church. He was a former member of Danville Kiwanis Club and Danville Horticultural Club, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was conferred an Honorary Associate Degree in Humane Letters by B. Carlyle Ramsey, president of Danville Community College.

In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Linda VanOot of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Beverly V. Williams of Atlanta; a sister, Dorothea V. Driscoll of Fair Haven, N.Y.; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m., Wednesday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Bruce Wilson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Russell Lee Craddock

CHATHAM - Russell Lee Craddock, 90, formerly of Route 2, died Monday evening in the Piney Forest Health Care Center where he had been a resident for seven years.

Born in Pittsylvania County July 24, 1907, he was a son of the late Charlie Letcher Craddock and Anna Bennett Craddock.

He was married to Elizabeth Cocke Craddock, who predeceased him. Later, he was married to Eula Shorter Craddock, who also predeceased him.

Mr. Craddock was a member of Chatham Christian Church and was retired from farming.

He is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, Russell William Craddock and Gwen V. Craddock of Huntington, W.Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Merle C. Mead and Winston Mead of Lynchburg, Anna C. McDowell and the late Fred C. McDowell of Forest; three stepchildren, Billie Anne S. Marrilla and Pat S. Giles, both of Danville, and Shelia S. Craddock of Chatham. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and numerous step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Craddock was predeceased by four brothers, Virgil E. Craddock, Richard I. Craddock, James L. Craddock and Perry B. Craddock. He was also predeceased by four sisters, Mintie C. Riddle, Lydia C. Motley, Ella C. Motley and Bertha M. Craddock.

The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m., from Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Carson Dalton. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Thursday at 1 p.m., prior to the funeral service.

Memorial considerations may be made to the Chatham Christian Church.
