Rev. Erwin Puryear
BUFFALO JUNCTION - Rev. Erwin Hayes Puryear, 93, died Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, in Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community.
Born Aug. 30, 1903, in Buffalo Springs, he was a son of William Lewis and Frances Montague Puryear.
He was married
to Louise Puryear, who died in 1989.
He attended Clarksville High School. In 1924, he earned a B.A. degree from the University of Richmond. In 1927, he graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
As a field worker for the Virginia Baptist Mission Board, he organized and served as pastor of Arlington Baptist Church and Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Arlington. He also organized First Baptist Church of Annandale, as a mission of Arlington Baptist Church.
After spending 15 years in Northern Virginia, he served churches in Gate City, Danville, Independence, Fort Royal, Singers Glen, Mecklenburg County, and Avon Park, Fla.
Following his retirement in 1967, he served as interim pastor for many churches in the Clarksville and Mecklenburg County areas. In 1989, he moved to the Retirement Community in Culpeper.
Survivors include two daughters, Alice P. Tumblin of Decatur, Ga., and Anne L. Hubbard of Bellevue, Wash.; a son, William E. Puryear of Fairfax; two brothers, Eugene Underwood Puryear of Clarksville and F. Montague Puryear of Lillington, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. William Bess, the Rev. Rodney Baker, and the Rev. David Henry. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Watkins Cooper Funeral Home in Clarksville.
Herman Willhite
Herman Franklin Willhite, 65, 433 Kemper Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 1996, in his residence, following a year of declining health.
Born May 23, 1931, in War, W.Va., he was a son of Ira Willhite and Gracie Radford Willhite, who survives.
In January of 1954, he was married
to Patsy Blair Willhite, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the City of Danville Electric Department as a general line foreman for 32 years.
He was a member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 325 and Post No. 647 and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1949 until 1954, and in the Virginia National Guard from 1954 until 1986.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Teresa W. Pigott of Danville and Vivian W. Soyars of Cascade; a brother, Bill Willhite of Danville; three sisters, Rosa Mae W. Johnson and Dawn W. Kendrick, both of Danville, and Goldie W. Pyrtle of Burlington, N.C.; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by a son, Don R. Willhite and a sister, Betty W. Duncan.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Ronald E. Graham. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens, where military honors will be given by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Calvin Cassada
AXTON - Calvin Dallas Cassada, 72, Route 2, Axton, died Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, in his residence.
Born Oct. 24, 1923, in Schoolfield, he was a son of Ellis A. Cassada and Mary Sue Hundley Cassada.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Mills in the maintenance department and weaving room for 36 years.
He was a member of Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church and of the Woodman of the World.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl F. Presnell of Axton; two sons, Larry N. Cassada and Terry L. Cassada, both of Axton; two brothers, Marvin V. Cassada of Clemons, N.C., and Norman M. Cassada of Axton; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Elmer E. Cassada.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday from McKee Funeral Chapel in Martinsville by the Rev. George Riggins III. Burial will be in the Cassada Family cemetery.

Helen Haggart
Helen Ramsey Haggart, 82, formerly of 228 McCoy Road, Salisbury, N.C., died Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, in Piney Forest Health Care Center. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born Sept. 9, 1914, in Rowan County, N.C., she was a daughter of Belle Kesler Ramsey and R.E. Ramsey Sr.
She was married
to Thurston Clarence Haggart, who died Feb. 16, 1993.
She graduated from Catawba College in 1937. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Rowan County Elementary School as a teacher. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two brothers, Jack Ramsey of Salisbury, N.C., and Vernon J. Ramsey of Jacksonville, N.C.; and four sisters, Bonnie Curlee of Danville, Betty R. Ferguson and Patricia Ann Meadows, both of Siler City, N.C., and Nancy K. Ramsey of Winston-Salem, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Summersett Memorial Chapel in Salisbury N.C., by Dr. Donald W. Haynes. Burial will be in Rowan Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and other times at the home of his brother, Jack Ramsey, 228 McCoy Road, Salisbury, N.C.
George 'Chief' Hudson Jr.
The funeral for George Thomas "Chief" Hudson Jr., 70, 123 Shumate St., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the mausoleum at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson.
He died Sunday, Oct. 20, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for several years.
Born June 22, 1926, in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Thomas Hudson Sr. and Annie Haley Hudson.
He was married
to Minnie Adkins Hudson, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Danville area, where he was employed in the glass business for various companies for 42 years. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Milton Hudson and James Parsons Sr. both of Danville; one brother, Rowland Lee Hudson of Lexington, N.C.; one sister, Eva Mae Triplett of Danville; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Dale Moorefield
LAKE CITY, GA. - Dale Warner Moorefield, 47, 5176 Laurel Circle, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 1996, in Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., following a motorcycle accident.
Born Sept. 9, 1949, in Suffolk, Va., he was a son of Warner Herald Moorefield, who survives, and Florence Hawkins Moorefield.
He had lived in Lake City since 1962, where he was employed by the Police Department as captain in the detective division. He was also a member of Clayton Community Church in Morrow.
In addition to his father of Roanoke, Va., survivors include his stepmother, Helen H. Moorefield of Roanoke, Va.; a stepbrother, Keith M. Dodson of Vinton, Va., and a stepsister, Julia D. Richardson of Woodbridge, Va.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. David Henry. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Curtis Mullins
NEWPORT NEWS - The funeral for Curtis Lee Mullins, 73, will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.
He died Saturday, Oct. 19, 1996.
Born March 15, 1923, in Danville, he was a son of George Washington Mullins and Ida Flossie Irby Mullins.
For 51 years, he was married
to Aggie A. "Belle" Mullins, who predeceased him.
He had been a resident of the peninsula since 1952.
He was a charter member of Denbigh Assembly of God Church, where he was active in gospel singing, choir directing and playing the autoharp.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia M. Jones of Chesapeake and June M. Sheppard of Toano; a brother, Linwood C. Mullins of Danville; a sister, Rosa B. Jones of Lawrenceville; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Elvin "Moon" Mullins of Danville.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Jessie Sizemore
BETHANY, CONN. - Jessie Overby Sizemore, 70, 25 Rowe Court, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 1996, in St. Raphael's Hospital in New Haven.
Born July 11, 1926, in Buffalo Springs, Va., she was a daughter of Charles Overby and Eliza Poole Overby.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by New Haven Public School as an educator. She was a member of First Church of Christ Congregational.
She was also a life-time member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Phi Delta Kappa Education Sorority.
She is survived by two sons, Reginald O. Sizemore of Bethany and Samuel Sizemore of San Lerndon, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy O. Harris of Danville, Va.; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted noon Thursday from First Church of Christ Congregational. Burial will be in the Memorial Park of Bethany.

Samuel Clark
Samuel Clark, 63, of 509 Greenwich Circle, died Friday, Oct. 18, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 16, 1933, he was the son of Garfield Clark and Queen Ester Davis Clark.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a supervisor at P. Lorillard Tobacco Co.
Survivors include two brothers, William Clark of Chatham and John Clark of Capitol Heights, Md.; two sisters, Dolores Watson of Washington, D.C., and Christine Hemingway of Chatham; two sons, Ronnie Coles of Gretna and Lawrence Edward Logan of Chatham; three daughters, Linda Stone of Chatham, Barbara Brown of Blairs and Keona Williams of Danville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Fred Davis. Burial will be in Chatham cemetery.

She died Saturday afternoon, Oct. 19, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 1, 1938, in Mayberry, W.Va., she was the daughter of Henry Harry Crockett and Alice May Blankenship Crockett.
Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Gail Moore of Danville; one son, Richard David Moore of Danville; four brothers, Jimmy Crockett, Henry Crockett, Jackie Crockett and Charles Crockett, all of Roanoke; four sisters, Sarah Albert of Deltona, Fla., and Carol Jeffries, Betty Bowes and Pansy Mays, all of Roanoke; and one granddaughter.

CHATHAM - Geraldine Odell Palmer, 67, of 3259 Sago Road, died Friday, Oct. 18, 1996, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born May 2, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Andrew and Carrie Witcher Campbell.
She was married
to James B. Palmer, who preceded her in death.
She was a member of Greater Mount Parrish Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the Senior Choir, D.C. Combined Choir and Mass Choir. She was also a Sunday school teacher and a member of Truevine Extension Club.
Survivors include one daughter, Lavander Campbell of Rocky Mount; two sons, Clark Campbell of Penhook and James F. Palmer of Chatham; two foster sons, Glenn Palmer of Penhook and Thomas Palmer of Chatham; two brothers, Clarence Campbell and Joe Campbell both of Penhook; five sisters, Virginia Muse and Daffy Muse both of Rocky Mount, Gay Campbell, Kate Campbell and Betty Cobbs all of Penhook; three grandchildren and five foster grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greater Mt. Parrish Baptist Church by Dr. Samuel Easley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
