Samuel Atkinson
Samuel Washington Atkinson, 80, of Route 1, Halifax, died Friday, Oct. 25, 1996, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 28, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of David James Atkinson and Mary Latishia Atkinson.
He was married
to Mamie Arendall Atkinson.
He was a member of Halifax Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Patsy A. Crabtree of Nathalie; one son, Samuel Bruce Atkinson of Halifax; one sister, Norine Hall of Danville; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Halifax Memorial Gardens by the Rev. H.V. Conner.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home, South Boston, and at other times, at the home of his daughter, Patsy Crabtree, 2036 Stage Coach Road, Nathalie.
Garnette Hatcher
The funeral for Garnette Durham Hatcher, 69, of 115 Hatcher Road, Pelham, N.C., will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John C. Gentry. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times, at the home of a son, Wade H. Hatcher, 1122 Arch Cook Road, Pelham.
She died Friday, Oct. 25, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health of four weeks.
Born June 5, 1927, in Danville, she was a daughter of Julius Luther Durham and Sara Bean Durham.
On May 18, 1946, she married
Robert Lee Hatcher.
She was a housewife and lived most of her life in the Pelham community. She attended Gatewood Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Weadon of Ruffin, N.C.; three sons, Michael L. Hatcher and Julius W. Hatcher, both of Danville, and Wade H. Hatcher of Pelham; one sister, Thelma Montgomery of Richmond; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Preston Durham and Luther Durham, and one grandchild.
Harriett Jones
Harriett Emma Jones, 72, of 122 Darby Road, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 7, 1923, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Henry J. Chaney and Clais R. Barksdale Chaney.
She worked at Bassett Furniture Co. for many years.
Survivors include one brother, Ruben Chaney of Martinsville; and other relatives.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday at White Oak Grove Baptist Church, Sutherlin, by Pastor Eddie Davis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Dora Scearce
Dora Megginson Scearce, 79, of 2883 Westover Drive, died Friday, Oct. 25, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health one year.
Born Feb. 14, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charles Edward Megginson and Nellie George Megginson.
On May 27, 1933, she married
Jasper (J.E.) Edward Scearce.
She lived all of her life in Danville, where she worked in the family-owned business, J.E. Scearce & Sons General Contractors, as secretary and bookkeeper for more than 18 years. She was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Kaye Woodall Rogers of Danville; two sons, Charles E. Scearce and J. David Scearce, both of Danville; one brother, Maynard Megginson of Keeling; two sisters, Kathleen M. Widdifield and Gaynell M. Peters, both of Danville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, by the Rev. Linwood Daniel. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and, at other times, at the residence.
Harry Scott
The funeral for Harry Corranza Scott, 78, of 1155 Piney Forest Road, will be conducted 2:30 p.m. today at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home by Bishop William Yarbrough. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Scott died Thursday, Oct. 24, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 12, 1918, he was the son of Harry Scott and Martha Grasty Scott.
He was first married
to Etherene Tolent and later to Shirley P. Scott.
He was educated in the Pittsylvania County Schools and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was member of Bethlehem Temple Holiness Church, where he served as associate minister until his health declined.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include one stepdaughter, Sharon Moore of Danville; two brothers, Phillip Scott and Elder Matthew Scott, both of Danville; one sister, Thelma Vaden of Danville; and other relatives.
Henry Bowling
ARRINGTON - Henry David Bowling, 81, 521 Arrington Road, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 1996, in Heritage Hall Nursing Home of Charlottesville.
Born April 30, 1915, in Colleen, he was a son of Harry Randolph Bowling and Louise Stevens Bowling.
For 60 years, he was married
to Margaret Adams Bowling, who survives.
He was employed by the City of Danville from 1935 until his retirement in 1966. He held the position of director of public works, but was employed as the city civil engineer when he retired.
He was founder and owner of Bowling Forest Service in Buckingham County. He was also a member of Woodland Baptist Church, which he designed and constructed in 1969 and 1970.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Jane B. Mays of Arrington; two sisters, Annie B. Umbarger and Dorothy B. Giles, both of Arrington; a brother, W. Steve Bowling of Appomattox; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Woodland Baptist Church in Colleen by the Rev. David Blevins. Burial will be in Woodland Memorial cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston, and other times at the residence of Jane B. Mays, 515 Arrington Road.
Elbert Redd
JAVA - Elbert Allison Redd, 79, Route 1, Java, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 1996, in Autumn Care Nursing Home.
Born July 27, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Eddie Washington Redd and Mary Roach Redd.
He was first married
to Hazel Garrett Redd, who predeceased him. He was later married
to Elise Boeltie Redd, who also predeceased him.
He was a member of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include two sons, Elbert Dean Redd of Java and Michael Redd of Vernon Hill; five daughters, Mavis R. Davis of Chathm, Cynthia R. McDanial and Mary Sue R. Danial, both of Blairs, Lucy R. Lane of Java, and Joanne R. Ricketts of Danville; three brothers, Edward Redd of Chatham, Henry Redd of Java and Carlton Redd of Halifax; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Saint Paul's Episcopal Church cemetery by the Rev. Donald L. Wright and the Rev. Rudolph P. Jacobs.

Johnnie Reynolds
CHATHAM - Johnnie Dean Saunders Reynolds, 68, 607 Oakland Drive, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 3, 1928, in Martinsville, she was a daughter of Perry Garvin Saunders and Elsie Crenshaw Saunders.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Tune and Toler as a secretary and treasurer. She also worked with the Chatham Red Cross Chapter.
She was a member of Watson Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Robert D. Reynolds Jr. of Chatham and R. David Reynolds of Richmond; two brothers, Perry G. Saunders of Orlando, Fla., and Michael R. Saunders of Penhook; four sisters, Jill S. Henderson of Birmingham, Ala., Perry Anne S. Gibson and Nikki S. Wilson, both of Chatham, and Robin S. Williams of Lynchburg; and two half-sisters, Peg S. Mayhew of Chatham and Pat S. Tyree of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Chatham by the Rev. William C. Thomas. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
Inez Holt
Inez Barber Holt, 69, 125 Harris Place, died Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, in her residence, following a year of declining health.
Born Oct. 13, 1927, in Danville, she was a daughter of James Jackson Barber and Elizabeth Adkins Barber.
On May 12, 1949, she was married
to Herman Lewis Holt, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Mills for 30 years until her retirement. She worked in the No. 8 Inspecting Room.
She was a member of the Stroke Victim Club and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a daughter, Judy Holt Fitzpatrick of the residence; a son, Randy Lewis Holt of Brosville; two grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Daryl S. Joyce and the Rev. Lee Von Eime. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

Beatrice Mayhew
CHATHAM - Beatrice Doss Mayhew, 82, 6516 Oxford Road, died Monday, Oct. 21, 1996.
Born July 24, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Henry Clay Doss and Sarah Barbour Doss.
She was married
to Lennie Mayhew, who predeceased her.
She was a member of New Bethel Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include two sons, Sherman Mayhew of Chatham and Tom Mayhew of Gretna; a daughter, Bitha Yeatts of Gretna; a brother, Newton Doss of Chatham; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Hollis Doss and Wilsie Doss.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from New Bethel Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Alvery Parr and the Rev. David Turbyfill. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Dale Moorefield
LAKE CITY, GA. - The funeral for Dale Warner Moorefield, 47, 5176 Laurel Circle, will be conducted 3 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. David Henry. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Sunday, Oct. 20, 1996, in Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., following a motorcycle accident.
Born Sept. 9, 1949, in Suffolk, Va., he was a son of Warner Herald Moorefield, who survives, and Florence Hawkins Moorefield.
He had lived in Lake City since 1962. He was employed by the Forest Park Police Department as captain in the detective division. He was also a member of Clayton Community Church in Morrow.
In addition to his father of Roanoke, Va., survivors include his stepmother, Helen H. Moorefield of Roanoke, Va.; a stepbrother, Keith M. Dodson of Vinton, Va., and a stepsister, Julia D. Richardson of Woodbridge, Va.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Booth, 102 Gloucester Ave., Danville, Va.
Mildred Parker
Mildred Johnson Parker, 67, 126 Johnson St., died Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 19, 1928, in Danville, she was a daughter of Frank G. Johnson Sr. and Madie Hutchings Johnson, who survive.
She was married
to Frank Parker, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Vance Street Baptist Church. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Clothes Factory in New York.
In addition to her parents of Danville, survivors include two brothers, Frank Johnson Jr. of Dickerson, Md., and Earl Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five sisters, Mary I. Morrison of Oak Park, Ill., Teresa Johnson of Virginia Beach, Deana L. Turay of Burtonville, Md.; Shirley J. Plunkett and Linda G. Johnson, both of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Vance Street Baptist Church by the Rev. H.L. Dickerson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Myrtle Post
CHARLOTTESVILLE - Myrtle Wynn Nichols Post, 93, 412 Third St., N.E., died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 1996, in the Adult Care Center No. 2 on Carlton Road.
Born Sept. 17, 1903, in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of Jessie Wynn and Rosa Weatherman Wynn.
She attended Averett College and graduated from Blackstone College.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Charlottesville.
She was certified by the Virginia State Board of Education and taught school in Pittsylvania County, Charlottesville and Albemarle for 23 years.
Survivors include a son, E.D. "Sonny" Nichols of Charlottesville; two step-daughters, Jean Post Gianniny of Charlottesville and Evelyn Post Adams of Manassas; six sisters, Edna Pugh, Gaynell Smith, Lillian Yates, Clarice Harris, and Lorraine Vernon, all of Danville, and Margie Schwartz of Silver Spring, Md.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Estel D. Nichols, her second husband, Victor H. Post, and by a daughter, Doris Nichols Patterson Hatcher.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Rebecca Yow.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Lillian Yates and Gaynell Smith, 214 Mt. Vernon Ave.
