STAUNTON - Mrs. Eva Stansbury Smith, 80, of 121 Beverley Court, died Friday, Nov. 8, 1996, at her residence.
Born Nov. 21, 1915, in Halifax County, N.C., she was a daughter of Louis D. and Nellie Sherrin Stansbury.
She was retired from Western State Hospital where she had received her training as a certified nursing assistant (CNA).
She was married
to Lee Wallace Smith, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter, Marie S. Lowe of Providence, N.C.; three sisters, Margaret S. Christianson of Pelham, N.C., Alice S. Kelly of Providence, R.I., and Frances S. Branscome of Dawsonville, Ga.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Augusta Memorial Park by the Rev. Judson Baldwin.
The family will receive friends at her residence.

Harry Swanson
Harry R. Swanson, 82, of Riverside Health Care Center, died Sat., Nov. 9, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 13, 1914, in Danville, he was a self-employed tailor.
He was a member of High Street Baptist Church where he was a trustee.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Survivors include three brothers, Julian Swanson of Danville, Carroll A. Swanson of Washington, D.C., and Fredrick E. Swanson of Columbus, Ohio; and three sisters, Anne S. Drew of Washington, D.C., Marguerite S. Hopkins of Danville, and Catherine S. Barlow of Hartford, Conn.
The funeral arrangements are incomplete.
The family is receiving friends at the residence of a brother, Julian Swanson, 117 Fairlawn Drive.
Ryland Warren
SOUTH BOSTON - A graveside service for Ryland Morton Warren, of Boston Commons Retirement Home, will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. William Thomas.
He died Thursday, Nov. 7, 1996, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 1, 1897, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Benjamin Samuel Warren and Alice Allen Warren.
He was married
to Mary Miller Warren, who died May 16, 1988.
He was a employed by the public school systems in Winston-Salem, N.C., and the District of Columbia as a teacher for many years.
After moving to Chatham in 1957, he taught in the Pittsylvania County School system and later at Hargrave Military Academy.
He was a member of Watson Memorial United Methodist Church in Chatham. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in South Boston.
He is survived by a son, Allen Mickey Warren of Richmond; a brother, Almon Vaden Warren of Fredericksburg; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends noon-1 p.m. Monday at Townes Funeral Home.
Edward Womack Jr.
The funeral for Edward Womack Jr., 70, 1205 Lamar St., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert Easter. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.
He died Thursday, Nov. 7, 1996, in his residence.
Born Feb. 7, 1926, in Shiloh, he was a son of Samuel Edward Womack and Carrie M. Jones Womack, who survives.
He was married
to LaVon Mimms Womack, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was employed by People Drug Store and retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.
He was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board, trustee and superintendent of Sunday school. He was also past president and chairman of the Steering Committee and Sunday School Union of Danville and Vicinity. He was a member of the Deacons Union of Danville, the Ushers Union of Danville, and the Baptist Training Union.
In addition to his mother of Washington, D.C., and his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Ponsiana Womack of Washington, D.C., Vanessa W. Easter of Richmond, and Nancy Ann Womack of Alexandria; a son, Joseph Womack of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Robert "Jim" Womack of Forest Heights, Md., and Arthur "Teenie" Womack of Reidsville, N.C.; aDixon named Dogwood's top player; Locust, top coach.
Thurman Childress
CHATHAM - Thurman Jerome Childress, 66, Route 2, Box 648, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 1, 1930, in Danville, he was a son of Eugene Luther Childress and Cora Garrett Childress.
He was married
to Elizabeth Giles, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Corning Glass. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of First Church of the Brethren and attended Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include his step-mother, Estelle M. Childress of Danville; a son, Terry Childress of Burke; a step-daughter, Judy Myers of Gretna; a brother, Dewey Childress of Danville; three grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday from Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas E. Wright and the Rev. Dale F. Watson. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence, 245 Tight Squeeze Road.
Pearl Coles
CHATHAM - Pearl Coleman Coles, 81, 521 North Main St., died Monday, Nov. 4, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 24, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Alonzo and Rosa White Coleman.
She was married
to Cecil Coles, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Chatham Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Presbyterian Women's Circle and the N.A.A.C.P.
She is survived by a sister, Stearling C. Barksdale of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a half-sister, Lizzie Robertson of Monoghela, Pa.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from Chatham Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn. Burial will be in Chatham cemetery.
The body may be viewed 2-7 p.m. today at Howerton Funeral Home in Chatham. The family will receive friends at the residence.
James Oakes
BLAIRS - James Thomas Oakes, 56, 1113 Snake Path Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 28, 1940, in Danville, he was a son of Ruby Owen Oakes, who survives, and Oscar Douglas Oakes.
On April 8, 1967, he was married
to Clydene Giles Oakes, who survives.
He spent his life in the Pittsylvania County area. He was employed by Ennis Business Forms, where he had worked for the past 35 years.
He was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church in Dry Fork, where he was Sunday school teacher of the Fellowship class and was past choir director for 25 years.
He was also a member of the barber shop quartet known as the Dixie Dans, which he sang with for many years.
In addition to his mother of Blairs and his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, James Matthew Oakes of the residence; a daughter, Ellen Oakes Moorefield of Hurt; a brother, D. Wayne Oakes of Port Richie, Fla.; and a sister, Marylin Oakes of Blairs.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Oakland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Louis A. Martin and the Rev. Fletcher Hardy. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Oakland United Methodist Church, and other times at the residence.

A graveside service for Otis Ray Page, 82, formerly of 224 Courtland St., Apt. No. 326, will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Calvin Hines.
He died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1996, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 20, 1914, in Schoolfield, he was a son of John B. Page and Mallie May Tugman Page.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was employed as a loom fixer at Dan River Inc. before retiring in 1976. He was also a member of Dayspring Baptist Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include two sons, John Ray Page of Charlottesville and Charles Edward Page of Richmond; a daughter, Robin Hagler of Danville; and nine grandchildren.

Lester Richmond
Lester Hubert Richmond, 51, 33 Holcomb St., Stokesland community, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1996, in Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., following several years of declining health.
Born March 21, 1945, in Danville, he was a son of Lonnie P. Richmond and Helen Cox Richmond, who survive.
He spent his entire life in the Stokesland community. He was employed by Coca-Cola Bottling Co. as a truck driver for many years and later by Smith Transfer Co. until he became disabled.
He was a member of Virginia National Guard and American Legion Post No. 325. He was also a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents of the Stokesland community, survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Gail Warren of Greensboro, N.C.; and two brothers, Dwight O'Neal Richmond of Hammond, La., and Carl Terry Richmond of Phoenix, Ariz.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dorothy Thomas. Burial will be in Dan River Primitive Baptist Church cemetery, where American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 will perform military honors.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his parents, 32 Holcomb St.
Louis Satterfield
HALIFAX - Louis Clifton Satterfield, 67, 1119 Dan River Church Road, died Nov. 6, 1996, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 9, 1929, in Halifax County, he was a son of George Ira Satterfield and Hester Sue Chaney Satterfield.
He was married
to Naomi Farthing Satterfield, who survives.
He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include two sons, Steve Clifton Satterfield of South Boston and David A. Satterfield of Danville; a sister, Ruby S. Clark of Keeling; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Dan River Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Dennis Knight and the Rev. Tim Howard. Military rites will be conducted.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
