Allie Surratt Sr.
Allie Clay Surratt Sr., 17 Doolittle St., died Sunday, Dec. 1, 1996.
Born Sept. 4, 1927, in Danville, he was a son of Mosesell Surratt and Violet Booth Surratt Yates, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was employed as an electrician. He served in the military during the Korean Conflict. He was also of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother of Danville, he is survived by a son, Clay Surratt Jr. of Danville; a brother, Winfred Surratt of Danville; two sisters, Ola Cobb and Mary Newby, both of Danville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gilmer Setliff.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Ola Cobb, 521 Beech Hollow Road.
Paul 'Pete' Gammon
Paul "Pete" Gammon, 76, of 4389 Horseshoe Road, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 1, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for 10 years.
Born May 12, 1920, in Pittyslvania County, he was a son of Claude Beverly Gammon and Jennie Scearce Gammon.
He was married
to Sarah Glenn Perkins Gammon, who survives.
He spent his entire life in the Brosville Community of Pittsylvania County, where he was a farmer. He also worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation for 23 years.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Paul T. Gammon of Brosville; one daughter, D'Atte Clifton of Brosville; one brother, Jasper H. Gammon of Bachelors Hall; two sisters, Jean G. Scearce and Marie Gammon both of Brosville; and one grandson.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bill Soyars. Burial will be in the Perkins family cemetery off Horseshoe Road in Brosville.
The family will receive friends at the home of his son, at 261 Still Springs Drive, Route 878, Brosville.
Mona Littleton
Mona French Littleton, 44, of 107 Pendleton Road, died Sunday evening, Dec. 1, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 25, 1952, in Panama City, Fla., she was a daughter of Thaniel French and Monette Parrish French, who both survive.
She had been a resident of Danville since 1990.
In addition to her parents, of Bonifay, Fla., she is survived by her husband, John W. Littleton of the home; a son, Justin L. Cross of Graceville, Fla.; a step-son, John W. Littleton Jr. of Birmingham, Ala.; a stepdaughter, Leslie A. Ramsey of Danville; and a brother, Thaniel French Jr. of Bonifay.
She was predeceased by a brother, Jerry L. French.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Townes Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bonifay, Fla.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.
Henry Marshall
Henry B. Marshall, 89, of 2801 Old Richmond Road, died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 1, 1996, at his home. He had been in declining health for several years and in serious condition for two weeks.
Born Feb. 9, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Ollie Barker and Betty Vaden Barker.
He was reared by Tom and Nancy Marshall, who are predeceased.
On Dec. 31, 1933, he was married
to Lois Lynch Marshall, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Pittsylvania County. He had worked for the Clutter Brothers Furniture Co. in Danville, and he retired from the Newport News Ship Building & Dry Dock, where he worked for 22 years.
He was a 2nd Degree charter member of the Moose Lodge in Danville.
He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife of the residence.
He was predeceased by a son, Warren Barker Marshall.
The graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. A. Kyle Flora.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ruby Carter
The funeral for Ruby Shelton Carter, 87, of 1545 Claiborne St., will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks. Burial will be in Liberty Memorial Gardens, Route 626 off Route 40 West.
She died Saturday, Nov. 23, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 28, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Frank Jackson Shelton and Bessie English Shelton.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she worked 32 years in No. 4A Weave at Dan River Inc.
She was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church.
Survivors include one son, Silas Moody Carter Jr. of Danville; a sister, Clella S. Swain of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Curtis Shelton of Danville and Clyde Shelton of Altavista; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel S. Pulliam.

Vera Collie
Vera Shannon Collie, 89, formerly of Route 2, Ringgold, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 1996, in Birgmingham Green Nursing Home in Manassas. She had been in declining health for four years.
Born Sept. 19, 1907, in Danville, she was the daughter of Frank Shannon and Ida Vaughn Shannon.
She spent her life in Pittsylvania County, where she was a homemaker before moving to Manassas. She was of the Baptist faith.
On May 10, 1924, she was married
to Garland Lester Collie, who died in July 1970.
Survivors include one daughter, Lois Jane Haight of Manassas; three sons, Earl S. Collie, David S. Collie and Lawrence Gene Collie all of Ringgold; one brother, Roy Shannon of Chincoteague; two sisters, Frances C. Molbeck of Carlsbad, Calif., and Doris C. Burkcall of Charleston, S.C.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. David Henry.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times will be at the home of her son, David S. Collie, 7961 Kentuck Road, Ringgold.
Robert Ellington
The graveside service for Robert Frank Ellington, 83, of 410 Northmont Blvd., will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Ron Mateer.
He died Friday, Nov. 22, 1996, at Stratford Health Care Center. He had been in declining health for seven years.
Born Oct. 7, 1913, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was a son of Robert "Jay" Ellington and Flossie Sparks Ellington.
He spent most of his life in the Danville area, where prior to his retirement he worked 30 years as a switchman for Southern Railway.
He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.
Ellington was married
to Mary Wilmoth Scarce Ellington on July 8, 1953.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Frances Ellington Cook of Reidsville, N.C.; one son, John Dale Ellington of Ruffin, N.C.; a step-son, Ronald Wayne Mayes of Richmond; a sister, Inez Ellington Chaney of Danville; one brother, Sparks Ellington of Reidsville; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one step-grandchild.

Mary Nolan
The funeral for Mary Pizzino Nolan, 72, of 711 Arlington Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Kenneth A. Clark. Interment will be Highland Burial Park.
She died Friday, Nov. 22, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, where she had been a patient for one day. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born May 23, 1924, in Glen Morrison, W.Va., she was the daughter of Sebastiano Pizzino and Elizabeth Sehen Pizzino.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area. She worked in the sheeting department at Fieldcrest Mills for many years. She was a member of the Russell Baptist Church in Glen Fork, W.Va.
Survivors include a daughter, Kawania Johnson of Danville; two sons, S. Curtis Nolan of Collinsville and Tony C. Nolan of Danville; four brothers, the Rev. Joe Pizzino of Shady Springs, W.Va, Ivan Pizzino of Beckley, W.Va., Bert Pizzino of Glen Fork, and Frank Pizzino of Charleston, W.Va.; a sister, Melda Reid of Glen Fork; and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Charlie Pizzino.
The family received friends Sunday night at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
John Burdette
MONETA - John Russell Burdette, 47, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 1996, in his residence.
Born Nov. 11, 1949, in Bedford County, he was a son of Reggie Burdette and Ida English Burdette.
Prior to his retirement on disability, he was employed by Bunker Hill Beef Co. in Bedford.
Survivors include a daughter, Jo Ann Martin of Moneta; four brothers, Junior Burdette of Huddleston, Eugene Burdette of Chester, Pa., Kenneth Burdette and Dennis W. Burdette, both of Moneta; and two sisters, Burnice Berger and Evelyn Norman, both of Moneta.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday from Emanuel Tabernacle Baptist Church in Moneta by Elder E.M. Mitchell. Burial will be in Thomas Chapel Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church, and other times at the residence.

James Davis Sr.
James Leonard "Lynn" Davis Sr., 88, 1703 Glenn St., died Monday, Nov. 18, 1996, in his residence, following a year of declining health.
Born Sept. 14, 1908, in Danville, he was a son of James Monroe Davis and Callie Crane Davis.
He was first married
to Macie Rigney Davis. He was then married
to Okie Montgomery Davis, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the City of Danville as a fire fighter.
He spent his entire life in Danville and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Barbara Davis Barnhardt of Danville and Geraldine Evans of Reidsville, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, James L. Davis Jr.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by Bishop William Collins. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Paul Farthing
BLAIRS - Paul William Farthing, 81, 4885 U.S. 29 North, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 1996, in his residence, following several years of declining health.
Born Jan. 23, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James T. Farthing and Annie Poole Farthing.
On Nov. 20, 1934, he was married
to Helen Wilson Farthing, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Blairs community. He was a retired farmer and a salesman for J.C. Penney Co. He was also a member of Blairs Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
In addition to his wife of Blairs, survivors include a daughter, Naomi F. Satterfield of Halifax; two brothers, Eugene T. Farthing of Danville and Ackles Farthing of California; a sister, Hilda F. Sneed of Fayetteville, N.C.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Blairs Baptist Church by the Rev. Luther Lemon and the Rev. Carson A. Dalton. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
