Michael Chesher
The funeral for Michael Shane Chesher, 27, of Lexington, S.C., will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham and the Rev. Duane Blevins. Interment will be at Schoolfield cemetery.
He died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996, from injuries sustained in a car accident.
Born May 4, 1969, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Walter G. Chesher and Faye Coleman Davis, who survive.
He attended Danville Christian Academy, George Washington High School and Danville Community College.
He was employed by Fisher Tank Co. of Lexington. He was a member of The Tabernacle.
In addition to his father of Hyco Lake, N.C., and his mother of Danville, survivors include a stepmother, Dana B. Chesher of Hyco Lake, N.C.; paternal grandparents, Walter and Ethel Chesher of Danville; his maternal grandmother, Doris Coleman of Danville; two brothers, Greg Chesher and Tim Chesher, both of Danville; and one stepbrother, Ben Jackson of Danville.
He is also survived by his fiance, Beth Hancock of Columbia, S.C.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his grandparents, Walter and Ethel Chesher, 1810 Blair Loop Road.
Sallie Compton
The graveside service for Sallie R. Compton, 88, of 816 Hughes St., will be conducted 11 a.m. today from the mausoleum at Danville Memorial Gardens by Dr. Samuel Greeson. Entombment will take place following the service.
She died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born Jan. 27, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Joe Rowland and Nannie Davis Rowland.
She spent most of her life in Danville, and retired after working 38 years at Dan River Inc.
She was a member of Kemper Road Baptist Church.
She was married
to Alvin Berkley Compton, who died June 20, 1981.
Survivors include a sister, Lucy Burnett of Altavista; and two brothers, Marvin Rowland of Jarratt and Elbert Rowland of Chesapeake.

Harry Darnell
Harry Norman Darnell, 77, of 104 Ashwood Place, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 1996, at his residence. He had been in declining health since September.
Born Aug. 3, 1919, in Danville, he was the son of Lonnie Darnell and Eunice Alley Darnell.
He spent his entire life in Danville and was retired from Rush Wholesale.
He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, where he was a Sunday school teacher.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
On Nov. 18, 1943, he was married
to Mary Velma Solomon Darnell, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Stephen W. Darnell of Colfax, N.C., and Dennis K. Darnell of Harrogate, Tenn.; one daughter, Vicky D. VonEime of Danville; two sisters, Ollie Mabe and Ruth McGregor both of Danville; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Jack Robertson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times will be at the residence.
Alma Dewberry
Alma Ireland Dewberry, 80, of 322 Chatham Drive, formerly of 409 Claiborne St., died Sunday, Dec. 15, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 23, 1916, in Yadkin County, N.C., she was the daughter of Winston Ireland and Emma Carter Ireland.
She worked 32 years for Dan River Inc., and attended Emmanuel Wesleyan Church.
She was married
to George Lee Dewberry, who died Dec. 21, 1973.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley D. Jennings of the residence; one son, Harvey Lee Dewberry of St. Augustine, Fla; one sister, Vertis I. Elder of Danville, Ill.; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gary Briden, the Rev. Kendall Jenkins, and Daniel Jennings. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Delano Grubbs
CHATHAM - Delano Edison Grubbs, 60, of 4629 Chalk Level Road, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 9, 1936, in Danville, he was a son of Gladys South Grubbs, who is predeceased, and John Acey Grubbs, who survives.
He lived several years in Richmond, where he was a millwright. He helped start Local No. 1402 of the Millwright.
He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Richmond.
In addition to his father of Danville, survivors include his wife, Daisy Reynolds Grubbs of the residence; two daughters, Deborah G. Custer of Chatham, and Pamela Grubbs of the residence; four sisters, Jackie Poteat of Richmond, Elizabeth Nettles of McCalla, Ala., Marsha Pinnick of Damascus and Shelia Sickinger of Chester; three brothers, Rodger Grubbs of Matoca, Robert Grubbs of Sutherlin and David Grubbs of Sandston; four grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Robertson. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Carol Hackney
SOUTH BOSTON - Carol Francis Hackney, 59, of 330 Edmunds St., died Sunday, Dec. 15, 1996, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 16, 1937, in Halifax County, he was a son of Phillip Hackney and Hattie Lambert Hackney.
He was married
to Ruby Arendall Hackney, who survives.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include one daughter, Vicky H. Rice of Wendell, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Deborah Maddocks of Warrenton and Brenda W. Rice of South Boston; one brother, Clyde Hackney of Madison; and two grandsons.
The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Halifax Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dr. Dennis Knight.

Bernice Herndon
Bernice Travis Herndon, 74, of 21 Holcomb St., died Sunday morning, Dec. 15, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in the hospital several times.
Born Aug. 1, 1922, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was a daughter of Harry B. Travis and Ruth Richmond Travis.
She was married
to Thomas N. Herndon Jr., who died June 30, 1980.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and worked at Dan River Inc. for 25 years.
She was a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Munford of Chatham and Vernice Maggert of Columbia City, Ind.; four sisters, Elizabeth Dix, Verna Gillie and Christine Moore all of Danville, and Jo Ann Loye of Reidsville, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Alton Travis.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stokesland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dorothy Thomas. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence.
Mary Jordan
Mary Page Waddill Jordan, 85, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 1996, at Baptist Hospital in South Carolina.
Born in Danville, she was the daughter of Linda Swain and Walter Wood Waddill Jr.
She was married
to Irvin Witcher Jordan, who is predeceased.
Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth James of Columbia, S.C.; three grandsons and two great-grandsons.
The graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenhill cemetery.
The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.

Marvin Underwood
The graveside service for Marvin Ray Underwood, 82, of Dula Street, will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Mark Moore.
He died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for two months.
Born March 22, 1914, in Grayson County, he was a son of Charles Underwood and Margaret Edwards Underwood.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He had spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked for Dan River Inc. before retiring. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two brothers, Loyd W. Underwood of Providence, N.C. and Jesse L. Underwood of Danville; one sister, Rosa Lee Martin of Danville; and other relatives.
James Burnett
James Pratt Burnett, 70, of 1444 Mt. Cross Road, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996, at his residence.
Born Jan. 28, 1926 in Danville, he was a son of Jason Osbourne Burnett and Emma Irene Ferguson Burnett.
He had lived all of his life in Danville.
He worked for Dan River Inc. for 42 years. He was of the Baptist faith.
He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 of the Veterans of Foreign War.
He was married
to Frances Hudgins, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by three brothers, Bill Burnett, Clayton Burnett and Asa Burnett.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda B. Craig and Carol B. Scearce, both of Danville; a son, Darriel Burnett of Danville; two sisters, Elizabeth Lovelace of Essex, Md. and Lavada Almond of Danville; one brother, Jim Burnett of Danville; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from the chapel of Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. Bill Soyars. Interment will be Highland Burial Park, with graveside military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 325's honor guard.
The family will receive friends form 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence of Linda Craig, 180 Mount Hermon Circle.
