Charlie Norton

Charlie L. Norton, 218 Hampton Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1996, in Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 5, 1909, in Danville, he was a son of C.L. Norton Sr. and Betty Hudgins Norton.
He was married to Virginia Gardner Norton, who died Jan. 23, 1986.
He spent his entire life in Danville. He was employed by Dan River Inc. for 32 years, where he retired as an engineer.
He was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church, a member of Barber Shop S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., and sang in the South Chords Quartet for many years.
He is survived by a daughter, Margaret N. Price of Rocky Mount, and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

J. Melvin Wyatt

The funeral for James Melvin Wyatt Sr., 81, 1632 Sugar Tree Church Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Brosville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard McDowell and the Rev. Robert Thorne. Interment will be in Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville.
He died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1996, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following four years of declining health.
Born Sept. 12, 1915, in Henry County, he was a son of James Lawson Wyatt and Fannie Richardson Wyatt.
He was first married to Lucille Webster Wyatt, who predeceased him. On Sept. 8, 1985, he was married to Mamie Campbell Wyatt, who survives.
He spent his entire life in Henry County before moving to Pittsylvania County to live the last 10 years. He was a retired insurance executive from J. Melvin Wyatt Insurance Agency, where he was an agent for State Farm Insurance Co. for 35 years.
He was a charter member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church in Martinsville. He later joined Brosville United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board, was past president of the United Methodist Men's Group and a charge lay leader.
He was grand chancellor of the Virginia Knights of Pythias and a member of Patrick Henry Lodge No. 82. He served as chairman of Peter S. Ford Memorial Christmas Tree Committee, and served on the Peter S. Ford Lake Property Board. He was also a member of Rajah Temple No. 195 Dramatic Order Knights of Korrasan in Roanoke. He was past president of the Patrick Henry Dokk Club. He was also a member of the Southeastern Pythian Association, where he attained the title of past president by his service and dedication to the order. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows and the BPO Elk's Lodge No. 1752 in Martinsville.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, James "Jim" Melvin Wyatt Jr. of Martinsville; two daughters, Betty Ann W. Perrin of Richmond and Linda W. Thompson of Lilburn, Ga.; a stepson, Mark T. Campbell of Winchester; a brother, L. Owen Wyatt of Fayetteville, N.C.; five sisters, Louise H. Frazier of Martinsville, Frances W. Connor of Danville, Florence W. Rittenhouse of Ridgewood, N.J., Elizabeth W. Hartz of McKenzie, Tenn., and Nancy W. Saunders of Gainesville, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by a son, James Michael Wyatt.
The family will receive friends 7:30-9 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence.

Jesse DeHart

Jesse G. DeHart, 86, 316 Rambler Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 24, 1909, in Floyd County, he was a son of William A. DeHart and Susie Hill DeHart.
He spent most of his life in Danville and Eden, N.C. He had been employed by several textile mills, including Spray Cotton Mill in Eden, N.C., as a loom fixer.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, where he was in battles in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded four bronze service stars, the American Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He is survived by a sister, Virginia D. Haynes of Danville.
He was predeceased by a sister, Gracie D. Richardson, four half-brothers, and three half-sisters.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in Overlook cemetery in Eden, N.C., by the Rev. Paul Johnson.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of his sister, 316 Rambler Drive.

Lawrance Gilchrist

The funeral for Lawrance Lee Gilchrist, 46, 202 Darby Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ by Bishop Peggy Motley. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 16, 1950, in Danville, he was a son of Pearl Gilchrist Richmond, who survives.
He was married to Drucille Davis Gilchrist, who survives.
He was employed by Masonite Wood Factory.
In addition to his mother of Danville and his wife, survivors include his stepfather, James Richmond of Danville; two sons, Zachary Gilchrist of Danville and Zachariah Gilchrist of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Stephanie Walters of Harrisburg, Pa.; two sisters, Evelyn Graves and Tonda Richmond, both of Danville; and three brothers, John Richmond of Danville, Darryl Richmond of Durham, N.C., and Larry Richmond of Buffalo, N.Y.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Bishop Clara Gerald, 602 Darby Road, Danville.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Paul Kelley

A memorial service for Paul Iliff Kelley, 77, 316 Summit Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David Gray.
He died Friday, Dec. 13, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 12, 1919, in Holland, Vt., he was a son of Orville Kelley and Lena Hitchcock Kelley.
He was formerly married to Phyllis Mitton Kelley of Medway, Mass.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a teacher and principal in Massachusetts. While living in Danville, he was a member of the Danville Duplicate Bridge Club.
He is survived by a son, Paul Kelley Jr. of Douglas, Mass.; a daughter, Nancy K. Collins of White Plains, N.Y.; a brother, Stirling R. Kelley of Newport, Vt.; and a sister, Frances K. Boisvert of Derby, Vt.
He was predeceased by a brother, Roland Kelley of California.

Alice McCarroll

OPELIKA, ALA. - Alice Pearl Sledge McCarroll, 82, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1996, in Alabama.
Born May 11, 1914, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Alice Flintoff Goodson Sledge and Joseph Franklin Sledge.
She was married to Henry Clayton McCarroll Jr., who predeceased her.
She attended Appalachian State Teacher's College, Campbell College, and Practical Bible Training School in Birighampton, N.Y. She received a bachelor's degree in religious education from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and a teaching certification from Auburn University in Alabama.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Opelika.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Kathryn Duncan of Opelika; a sister, Ema Sledge Sartin of Providence, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Providence Baptist Church in Providence, N.C. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Marley Funeral Home in Yanceyville, N.C.

Nellie Prather

A graveside service for Nellie Cooper Prather, 91, formerly of 46 Dallas Ave., will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Danville Memorial Gardens by Dr. Leroy Clack.
She died Sunday, Dec. 15, 1996, in Riverside Health Care Center, following several years of declining health.
Born April 11, 1905, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of Robert Lee Cooper and Fannie Mullins Cooper.
She was married to Clinton C. Prather, who died in 1974.
She spent most of her life in Danville. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren.
She is survived by a son, Clinton Carl Prather of Danville; a daughter, Frances Lee Brewer of Danville; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 134 Leslie Lane.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Jane Robertson

AXTON - Mary Jane Minter Robertson, 69, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1996, in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville Henry Co.
Born July 11, 1927, in Martinsville, she was a daughter of Musco Minter and Rosetta Eggleston Minter.
She was married to Sam K. Robertson Sr., who survives.
She was a charter member of Central Baptist Church in Axton.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four sons, Sam K. Robertson Jr. of Greencastle, Pa., and Gordon W. "G.W." Robertson, Edwin D. Robertson, and Richard Brian Robertson Sr., all of Axton; two daughters, Barbara K. Robertson of Axton and Susan R. Smith of Ruffin, N.C.; a sister, Ollie Eanes of Martinsville; a brother, Lewis Minter of Ferrum; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Frances Matthews and Callie Emory, and three brothers, Rayford Minter, Philmore Minter and Tillie Minter.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday from Central Baptist Church in Axton by the Rev. Bill Stegall and the Rev. Roy Newton. Interment will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at McKee Funeral Services in Martinsville, and other times at the residence.

Elsie Blair

SANDY LEVEL - Elsie Jacobs Blair, 98, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 1996.
Born Nov. 7, 1898, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Ernest Tilton Jacobs and Nannie Bell Huffmond Jacobs.
For 67 years she was married to Paul Blair, who is predeceased.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Pauline B. Kepley, two brothers, Gorman W. Jacobs and Lowry O. Jacobs, two sisters, Claudia J. Almond and Reba J. Flick, and a granddaughter.
She was the oldest member of Liberty Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Odell Blair of Sandy Level and Gordon Ray of Troutville; four daughters, Mozell Obenshain, Nannie Bell Aliff, Gertrude Trussler and Jean David all of Roanoke; one brother, Emmett L. Jacobs of Roanoke; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted noon Wednesday at Liberty Christian Church by Wayne Grinnell, minister. Burial will be in Liberty Memorial cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the funeral at Liberty Christian Church.
Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

James 'Red' Burnett

The funeral for James Pratt "Red" Burnett, 70, of 1444 Mount Cross Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bill Soyars. Interment will be Highland Burial Park, with graveside military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 325's honor guard.
He died Friday, Dec. 13, 1996, at his daughters' home, 180 Mount Hermon Circle.
Born Jan. 28, 1926, in Danville, he was a son of Jason Osbourne Burnett and Emma Irene Ferguson Burnett.
He spent his entire life in Danville, where he worked 42 years for Dan River Inc.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was married to Frances Hudgins, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by three brothers, Bill Burnett, Clayton Burnett and Asa Burnett.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda B. Craig and Carol B. Scearce, both of Danville; a son, Darriel Burnett of Danville; three sisters, Elizabeth Lovelace of Essex, Md., Hessie Hutcherson and Lavada Almond both of Danville; one brother, Jim Burnett of Danville; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of Linda Craig, 180 Mount Hermon Circle.
