Snowie Ellenberg

Snowie Collier Ellenberg, 89, died Wednesday, June 5, 1996, in Riverside Health Care Center, following several years of declining health.
Born July 17, 1906, in Greenup County, Ky., she was a daughter of William Collier and Stella Kelly Collier.
She was married to the Rev. F.V. Ellenberg, who died in March 1991.
She spent most of her life in Danville and was a former public school teacher. She attended Holmes Theological Seminary. She was also a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include two sons, Ben R. Ellenberg of Warsaw, N.C., and William T. "Bill" Ellenberg of Danville; a daughter, Dorothy Ann Olson of Reading, Pa.; a brother, Ray Collier of Portsmouth, Ohio; three sisters, Dova Tobalske of West Bend, Wis., Dorothy Ressinger of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Mae Payton of South Portsmouth, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Joe Beck and the Rev. Kenneth Terry. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Julia Johnson

Julia Garrett Johnson, 86, 1352 College Park Drive, died Saturday, June 1, 1996, in the Memorial Hospitalof Martinsville/Henry County.
Born April 17, 1910, she was a daughter of Will Garrett and Willie Johnson Garrett.
She was predeceased by her husband, Armstead Johnson.
She was employed by Dibrell Brothers until her retirement.
Survivors include three sons, Willard Johnson of Danville, William Johnson of Greensboro, N.C., and Armstead Johnson Jr. of Washington, D.C.; five daughters, Clara Monroe of Norfolk, Barbara Mark of St. Petersburg, Fla., Virginia Davis of Washington, D.C., Shirley Dixon and Ethel Cannon, both of Danville; and a sister, Ethel Bowe of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday from Ebenezer Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul A. Jackson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hilma Mayhew

GRETNA - Hilma Haynes Mayhew, 73, 1113 Blue Ridge Drive, died Wednesday, June 5, 1996, in Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born Aug. 18, 1992, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Monroe Haynes and Mary Hutcherson Haynes.
She was married to Melvin A. Mayhew, who survives.
She was a member of Midway Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a son, Michael R. Mayhew of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Martha M. Mitchell of Richmond, and Mary M. Moss of Gretna; one brother, Harold Haynes of Altavista; six sisters, Verlie Simpson, Irene Saunders, and Shirley McDaniel, all of Hurt, Hessie Midkiff of Wilmington, N.C., Doris Trevey and Gladys Ore, both of Lynchburg; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Midway Baptist Church by Dr. Lynn W. Marstin. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Arnold Proctor

RICHMOND - Arnold M. Proctor, 73, died Monday, June 3, 1996, at his place of employment.
He was born Sept. 26, 1922, at the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Poplar, Montana.
He was for married for 53 years to Mimi Sheib Proctor, who survives.
He was CEO of Froehling and Robertson Inc. of Richmond.
He was a member of the Assiniboine Tribe. He served in the U.S. Army from 1940-1945 and served during the Korean Conflict for two years. He was also a member of the U.S. Army Reserve and Virginia National Guard, retiring with the rank of major.
After World War II, he was employed by Virginia Tractor and the B.T. Crump Company of Richmond, before joining Magnavox Corporation in 1947. He was also the regional sales manager for the Pacific Northwest and then for Virginia before retiring in 1973.
He was a member of the Commonwealth Club, St. Christopher's Challengers Club, the Lodge of Strict Observance #207 and the Founders Club of Hampden-Sydney College. He was a thirty-second degree Mason and a 50-year member of the Scottish Rite.
He was a deacon of Ginter Park Presbyterian Church of Richmond, and a member of the vestry of St. Marks Episcopal Church in Roxboro, N.C.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Arnold M. Proctor Jr. and Samuel S. Proctor both of Richmond; three daughters, Mimi Games of Canway, Ma., Glenn Briody of Richmond, and Helen Tucker of Semora, N.C.; three brothers, a sister, and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Green Hill cemetery of Danville.

L. Tayloe Slaughter Jr.

WILLOW SPRINGS, N.C. - Louie Tayloe Slaughter Jr., 65, 1686 White Memorial Church Road, died Tuesday, June 4, 1996, in his residence.
He was a son of Louie and Vera Smith Slaughter.
He was married to Dale Slaughter, who survives.
He was employed by Guilford Mills in Fuquay-Varina as an electrician until his retirement. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of Yanceyville.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Rebecca Morris of Burlington, and Patsy Slaughter of Raleigh; two sons, Louie Tayloe Slaughter III of Clinton, and Tony Slaughter of the residence; four sisters, Vera Gentry of Cohutta, Ga., Peggy Watson of Prospect Hill, Mary Joyce Chandler and Hazel Massey, both of Yanceyville; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Annie Dean Watlington.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from White Memorial Presbyterian Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Overby Johnson Funeral Home in Angier.

Coleman Wells Jr.

ROANOKE - Coleman Maurice Wells Jr., 49, Route 1, Box 218 B, Henry, died Wednesday, June 5, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born May 21, 1947, in Callands, he was a son of Jonsie Eggleston Wells and Coleman Maurice Wells Jr., who survives.
He was employed by the Roanoke Times as a distributor for 10 years and by the Martinsville Bulletin as a rural carrier for eight years.
He also served in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his fiance, Betty Blankenship of the residence, a daughter, Deborah Wells Smith of Callands; a son, Jeffrey Maurice Wells of Callands; a sister, Margaret Harvey of Rocky Mount; and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Michael David Wells and Bennie Robert Wells.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from the chapel of Norris Funeral Services, in Martinsville, with burial in Henry Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Elsie Yeatts

GRETNA - Elsie Colbert Yeatts, 85, of Gretna, died Wednesday, June 5, 1996, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born March 28, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of A.T. Colbert and Mollie Scruggs Colbert.
She was predeceased by her husband, Fitzhugh Yeatts.
She was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret Yeatts of Gretna, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday from the chapel of Colbert-Moran Funeral Home by the Rev. Michael Southall-Vess. Interment will be in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her niece, Earleen Carddock, 702 Henry St., Gretna.

Geraldine Allen

Geraldine A. Allen of 341 Holbrook St. died Wednesday, June 5, 1996, at her residence.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Frank M. Allen Sr. and Ada Carter Allen.
She was a homemaker and a member of High Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Susie Witcher of South Boston; two brothers, Frank M. Allen Jr. of Dry Fork and Clyde Allen of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and Catherine Luck of the residence, and Dr. Albert Luck and Dr. Clyde Luck, both of Los Angeles.
A funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday from the Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Jerome Morris. Burial will follow in the Mt. Tatum Baptist Church cemetery, Dry Fork.
A viewing will be held today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence, 341 Holbrook St.

Horace Bennett

Horace L. Bennett, 86, of Ford in Amelia County, died Wednesday, June 5, 1996.
He was the son of William Bennett II and Martha Dodson Bennett.
He was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a brother, Ernest L. Bennett; four sisters, Dorothy B. Dyer, Mary B. Haynes, Ruby B. Ferguson and Janie B. Myers; a stepdaughter, Pearl Clifton; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Monday at Ringgold Baptist Church by the Rev. Carl Burger. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today at the Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home in Blackstone.

Lillie Davis

Lillie Williamson Davis, 68, 216 Prospect St., died Wednesday, June 5, 1996, in her residence.
Born Oct. 27, 1927, in New York, she was a daughter of Nathaniel Williamson and Narcissus Jeffers Williamson.
From age 10, she was reared by her aunt and uncle, the Rev. William and Estell Warner.
She was employed by Commonwealth Home Health Care.
Survivors include a son, James Dexter Henderson of Yanceyville, N.C.; a daughter, Franstella Henderson of Danville; two sisters, Merial Jones of Yanceyville and Elizabeth Martin of Winston-Salem, N.C., a brother, Curtis Williamson of Danville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday from the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. Samuel Griffith. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Minnie Gardner

Minnie Smith Gardner, 85, formerly of 118 Rocklawn Ave., died Saturday morning, June 8, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in the Piney Forest Health Care Center for two months.
Born Oct. 25, 1910, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Jefferson Smith and Jemina Dabbs Smith.
She was a homemaker and had lived most of her life in Danville and Caswell County, N.C. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Caswell County.
She married Luther H. Gardner on Feb. 27, 1946. He died on Nov. 7, 1971.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty G. Underwood of Providence, N.C., and Rachel G. Morton of Graham, N.C.; a brother, Jessie L. Smith of Providence; one grandson; and 15 stepgrandchildren and 19 step great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in the Providence Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Betty Underwood, 1405 Seamster Road, Providence.
