Pauline Baynes
Pauline Griffith Baynes, 89, died Thursday, May 30, 1996, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 9, 1907, in Spray, N.C., she was a daughter of Matthew Elbert Griffith and Mary Eanes Griffith.
After moving to Danville at a young age, she was a long-time resident of Fitzgerald Apartments until 1992.
She was employed by Dan River Inc., as a weaver and smash hand, until her retirement following 42 years of service.
She was a member of the Dan River Retired Club, the Golden Age Club, and the American Association of Retired Persons. She was also a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church, where she served as choir member and taught Sunday school.
Survivors include a son, Clarence W. Baynes of Danville; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur C. "Jack" Baynes, who died in 1969; two brothers, Alonzo Griffith and Henry Griffith; and a sister, Lillian Griffith.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by Dr. Doug Barber and the Rev. David Turbyfill. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the son's residence, 221 London Bridge Drive.
Ethel Bousman
PENHOOK - Ethel Grace Hedrick Bousman, 77, Route 2, Penhook, died Thursday, May 30, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She had been a patient in the hospital for eight days.
Born Aug. 23, 1918, in Franklin County near Museville, she was a daughter of Raleigh White Hedrick and Pearl Adkins Hedrick of Gretna.
On Dec. 8, 1937, she was married
to Oscar Bousman, who survives.
She was a member of Museville Christian Church and a former member of Snow Creek, Chapter 156, Order of the Eastern Star.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Dale B. Clay of Gretna, Aldene B. Kirk of Penhook and Naomi B. Bland of Norfolk; five sisters, Mrs. Letcher E. Edwards, Mrs. J. Calvin Yeatts, and Mrs. S.H. "Pete" Crawley, all of Gretna, Mrs. Ottis W. Howell of Altavista and Mrs. David C. Derby of Strasburg; two brothers, Clark W. Hedrick of Gretna and Raleigh Van Hedrick of Altavista; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by a brother, J.K. Hedrick of Salem.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Forrest Hill Christian Church in Penhook by the Rev. David Derby, the Rev. Steve Hayes, and the Rev. Ted Clifton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Lynch Funeral Home of Rocky Mount.
Ruth Burnette
GRETNA - Ruth Stevens Burnette, 75, 10321 Chalk Level Road, died Friday, May 31, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 17, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Harry Lee Stevens and Ethel Imhoff Stevens.
She was married
to R.M. "Kenny" Burnette, who survives.
She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Kenneth Wayne Burnette of Madison Heights and James Richard Burnette of Gretna; three brothers, Martin Stevens of Hurt, Justin Stevens of Gretna and Thornton Stevens of Danville; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Herbert Stevens and Ollie Stevens.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Greenfield Baptist Church by the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Interment will be in Gretna Burial Park.

Myrtle Ingram
GRETNA - Myrtle McMillian Ingram, 84, 451 Blue Ridge Drive, died Friday, May 31, 1996.
Born June 27, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of David Frank Ingram Sr. and May Robertson Ingram.
She was vice president of First National Bank of Altavista until her retirement.
She was a member and former officer of Altavista Woman's Club. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Gretna, where she served as a member of the Women's Missionary Union. She was also treasurer of the W.M.U. Staunton River Baptist Association for many years.
Survivors include three brothers, Richard Terry Ingram of Culpeper, and Thomas M. Ingram and D. Frank Ingram Jr., both of Gretna; and two sisters, Dita I. Scruggs of Gretna and Sally I. Johnston of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from First Baptist Church of Gretna by the Rev. W.D. Lilly. Interment will be in Gretna Burial Park.

Lucy Johnson
Lucy C. Johnson, 93, formerly of 161 Wood Ave., died Friday, May 31, 1996, in the Riverside Health Care Center, where she had been a resident since November 1994.
Born July 1, 1902, in Buena Vista, she was a daughter of Samuel Banks Campbell and Lucy Lee Bates Campbell.
While spending most of her life in the Schoolfield area of Danville, she was employed by Dan River Inc. as a spinner, until her retirement.
She was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church, where she served as a member of United Methodist Women.
Survivors include two sons, Gordon Johnson of Lynchburg and Parker Johnson of Danville; two brothers, Harry Campbell of Emporia and Clyde Campbell of Altavista; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Thomas Clarence Johnson, died Oct. 31, 1960. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Fratinia Slayton; and two sons, Clarence Johnson and Henry Johnson.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Jim Grogan. Interment will be at Highland Burial Park.

Nannie McCormick
Nannie Ferguson McCormick, 82, formerly of Ringgold, died Friday, May 31, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle for 18 months.
Born March 19, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Daniel Robert Ferguson and Juliette Jennings Ferguson.
She was married
to John David McCormick Sr., who died Sept. 4, 1984.
She was a homemaker who spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County. She was employed by Dan River Mills for a number of years, and was also a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Faye M. Garrett of Danville; a son, John David McCormick Jr. of Ringgold; a brother, Thomas Ferguson of Hurt; four sisters, Irby F. Dalton, Ruth F. Dalton, and Rebecca F. Burgess, all of Keeling, and Wilsie F. Banes of Martinsville; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Albert Moser. The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Faye M. Garrett, Route 6, Box 1542, Danville, on Route 876, off U.S. 58 West.
Mary Varner
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Mary Isabelle Varner, 86, 2735 U.S. Hwy. 158 West, died Thursday, May 30, 1996, in her residence.
Born Dec. 24, 1909, in Buffalo, N.Y., she was a daughter of James L. McIntosh and Adalaide Taylor McIntosh.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Clifton Varner.
She was retired from the U.S. Army - Air Force as a staff driver. She was also a homemaker and of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lee Carter of West Yanceyville; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday from Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Scott Wilkerson. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Marley Funeral Home of Yanceyville, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 69 Bo Carter Road, West Yanceyville.
Buddy Wimbush
CHATHAM - Buddy Lee Wimbush, 48, Route 2, died Thursday, May 30, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 4, 1948, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Rena Wimbush.
He was married
to Darlene T. Wimbush, who survives.
He was a former member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church. Prior to his disability, he was employed by the Pittsylvania County School Board as a custodian at Blairs Middle School.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Malet Wimbush of the residence, and Dequantrin Logan of Danville; and one sister, Carleese Dixon of Washington, D.C..
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Macedonia Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Deering. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Jessie Wood
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Jessie Wilson Wood, 82, 2941 U.S. Highway 158 West, died Thursday, May 30, 1996, in his residence.
Born Nov. 6, 1913, in Caswell County, he was a son of Arthur Lee and Isabelle Hammock Wood.
He was married
to Virgie Carroll Wood, who survives.
He was educated in Caswell County. He was also a member of Prospect United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the men's bible class, and a former member of the Board of Stewards. He was also an honorary member of the church Administrative Board.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Carolyn W. Barker of Milton; two sons, Wayne Wood of Leasburg, and Michael Wood of Yanceyville; and four sisters, Louise Poteat, Estelle Wood, Ercelle Grimes, and Catherine Wrenn, all of Yanceyville.
He was predeceased by a brother, William A. Wood; and two sisters, Blanche Swann and Annie Lee Carroll.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Prospect United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Wilkerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Hunter Burton
Willie Hunter Hardy Burton, 85, of 842 Grove St., died Saturday, June 1, at Danville Regional Medical Center where she had been for three weeks. She had been in declining health for three years.
Born March 12, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Willard Hardy and Pauline Burton Hardy.
She had lived most of her life in Danville and was a graduate of Brosville High School. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where she surved on the altar, membership and nourishment committees. She was a member of the Petriss-Ayers Sunday school class.
She married
Jesse W. Burton on April 27, 1936.
In addition to her husband of the home, survivors include a son, Douglas Wayne Burton of Danville; two sisters, Mary McAllister and Janie Green, both of Danville; two brothers, Malcolm J. Hardy of Danville and Burton Hardy of Stem, N.C.; and three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Richard Cobb. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Paul Collins
Paul Henderson Collins, 41, of 2008 Dale Drive, Blairs, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 1, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 1, 1954, in Wise County, he was the son of T.C. Collins and Kathleen Walters Collins.
He had lived most of his life in Danville and was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 18 years. He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a Sunday school teacher and a member of choir. He was a former deacon.
He was married
to Debra Arnn Collins.
In addition to his wife of the home and father of Danville, survivors include two sons, Paul Thomas Collins and John Aaron Collins, both of the residence; a daughter, Olivia Hope Collins of the residence; and two brothers, the Rev. Michael A. Collins and Raymond K. Collins of St. Augustine, Fla.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Joe Beck and the Rev. Barry Crumpton. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
