JORDAN
Frances Vaughan Jordan, 87, died November 15, 2001 after a long illness. She was the widow of Fred Jordan. She is survived by three sisters, Marian V. Betts of Woodinville, Wash., Mary Lucille Ashe and Thelma V. Wood, both of Richmond; two brothers, Charles B. Vaughan of Carlisle, Penn. and James R. Vaughan and his wife, Gaynel of Virginia Beach; also many nieces, nephews and devoted friends. Mrs. Jordan was preceded in death by two brothers, Freddie and Floyd Vaughan. Friends may call at the Reid Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Signal Hill Memorial Park. JOYCE
Charles Reid Simpson Joyce Jr. was born December 24, 1922 in Roanoke Va. and died November 1, 2001 in
Green Valley. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carolyn Kirkmyer of Richmond; son, Charles Reid Simpson Joyce III of Lafayette, Calif.; and stepson, George Winston McGeorge of Irvington, Va. Charles attended Virginia military Institute for one year at which time he received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1944. He served in the Pacific during World War II and was recalled for the Korean conflict as flag lieutenant and aide to Rear Admiral John H. Carson, commander of the Atlantic Fleet Training Command. Charles worked for the American Brake Shoe Co. for 25 years before retiring in Santo Tomas in 1974. He was a real estate broker in the area for a number of years. In 1990 the Joyces moved to
Green Valley, where they were members of the Country Club of
Green Valley and St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church. Charles was the former president of the Sons of the American Revolution, a member of the Society of Descendents of George Washington and the Orpheus Club of Philadelphia, the oldest singing club in the United States. He is the author of "The Virgin of Guadalupe," using the pen name of Carlos Allegre y Ce, which was published in 1984. He was an avid golfer and hiker and enjoyed playing the piano. His body was donated to the University of Airzona Health Science Center and at his request there will be no memorial service. Pauline "Polly" Robbins Lenhart, 79, of Chase City, died Friday, November 16, 2001. She is survived by her husband, J.T. Lenhart; a daughter-in-law and husband, Phyllis and Bill Williams, all of Chase City; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Janet Lenhart of Richmond; one brother, Marvin Robbins of Clarksville; one grandson, Robert Lenhart Jr.; two granddaughters, Theresa Ludacer of Manassas, and Paula Wilson of Oxford; one great-grandson, Evan Lee Lenhart; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Christopher Guy Lenhart. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, November 18, at Friendship United Methodist Church, with Rev. Joe Lott officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

William Lafayette Lucy, age 77, of Dolphin, Va., died November 16, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Muriel F. Lucy; a son, Michael F. Lucy of South Carolina; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Elnor Laffoon Maitland, age 76, of Alberta, Va., died November 17, 2001. She was the daughter of the late Alonza (Lonnie) W. and Carrie R. Laffoon, and is survived by a devoted husband of 55 years, Lloyd B. Maitland; two sons, Erwin L. and wife, Alice Carol Maitland, and Jeffrey L. Maitland, all of Alberta, Va.; a daughter, Kathy M. and her husband, Phil Pegram of Dundas, Va.; grandchildren, Criston M. Basdikis and her husband, Chris of Chesterfield, Charity M. Coleman and her husband, Jodie of Alberta, Jordan K. and Lindsey K. Pegram of Dundas; great-granddaughter, Mason G. Basdikis of Chesterfield; and preceded in death by a grandson, Corey N. Maitland. Edith Irene Crocker Oakley, 85, of Richmond, died Saturday, November 17, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Denver R. Oakley Sr.; and her grandson, Tommy Nunnally. She is survived by her four children, Vernelle O. Campbell, Bertha Lanham, Phyllis Ann Taylor and Denver R. Oakley Jr.; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Ralph Albert Palmieri Sr., 89, of Miami, Fla., formerly of Richmond, a proud veteran of World War II, died on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2001 after a short illness. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mildred P. Palmieri; his daughter, Judy Adkins, both of Miami; his son, Ralph Jr. of Fairfax, Va.; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. His remains will be cremated and returned to Virginia after a private service in Florida.

Stewart E. Proffitt, age 75, passed away November 16, 2001 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna J. Proffitt. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Lions Club for over 32 years. He retired from H&H Business Systems and was a technician for the Henrico Registry Office for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Beulah "Bea"; one son, Dennis Proffitt and wife, Valerie, Chesterfield; one daughter, Sherran Andrews and husband, Bob, Chesterfield; two stepsons, Jerry Trainham and wife, Linda, Midlothian and David Trainham and wife, Barbara, Powhatan; one stepdaughter, Sue Echals and husband, Ron, Midlothian; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Arthur, Hunter and Clyde Proffitt; three sisters, Ruth Stoneman, Helen Hamm and Mary Morris. Virginia Power Rhodes, daughter of the late James and Bruce Power, was born in North Carolina, June 4, 1929, passed away in Richmond, November 16, 2001. Mrs. Rhodes attended St. Luke's Nursing School, and she was a member of VFW Post 9808 Women's Auxiliary in Mechanicsville. Her survivors include her beloved husband of 49 years, W. Allen Rhodes; her sister-in-law, Mrs. J.F. Power Jr. of Wilmington, N.C.; also cousins, nieces and nephews in North Carolina. "Ginny", as she was affectionately known, will long be remembered by her many, many friends and neighbors for her great kindness and thoughtfulness. Her flowers and crafts brought joy to all that knew her. Smith died peacefully Monday, November 12, 2001 in Charlottesville in her 98th year. In 1926 she married Charles Holden Smith. She spent many years in Richmond, where her husband authored and directed the Virginia Supplemental Retirement System, the first plan by any state enabling state employees and teachers to participate in Social Security. She pursued a lifetime interest in wildflowers, birds and wildlife. Maymont was a special attraction for her daily walks. Survived by her one child, Charles H.

Herbert Rieves Stokes, age 83, former mayor of Farmville, died November 15, 2001 in Farmville. Mr. Stokes was a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, Class of 1940, and a graduate of the Virginia College of Commerce and Law, Class of 1949. He served in the Air Force, 1942, and was a POW in Germany. He was a member of the Farmville Presbyterian Church, former member of the Farmville Lions Club, a member of the VFW, a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, a member of the Museum Board of Hampden-Sydney College, and past commander of the Central Virginia Chapter of POWS. He is survived by his wife, Allison Reid Stokes; two daughters, Mrs. Allison S. Martin, Farmville and Mrs. Linda S. Johnson, Burkville; one son, Cary B.
