Bernard Oakes

BLAIRS - Thomas Bernard Oakes, 84, 179 Woodcreek Drive, Blairs, died Sunday, May 19, 1996, in his residence, following several years of declining health.
Born July 21, 1911, in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Thomas Clement Oakes and Iola Burton Oakes.
On Nov. 23, 1936, he was married to Sally Lou Oakes Oakes, who survives.
While spending his entire life in Pittsylvania County, he was employed by Dan River Mills Inc., 4-B Schoolfield Division, for 36 years. Following his retirement, he worked part-time for John Allen's Cabinet Shop.
He was a member of the Dan River Retiree's Club and of the Senior Citizens' Club. He was also a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Blairs.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sisters, Margaret O. Moore of Brosville, Madeline O. Thompson of Anderson Heights, and Dorothy O. White of Hillsville.
He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Kenneth Oakes, and also by a brother, Harmon Oakes.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Dr. Woodrow Giles and the Rev. Robert Carthy. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, 179 Woodcreek Drive in Deerwood Springs, off Route 29 North.

Hazel Brooks

CHATHAM - Hazel Harvey Brooks, 81, 107 Whittle St., died Tuesday, May 21, 1996, in the Riverside Health Care Center of Danville.
Born June 18, 1914, in Reidsville, N.C., she was a daughter of Benjamin Edward Harvey and Elizabeth Edwards Harvey.
She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Taft Brooks.
She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda B. Bailey and Catherine B. Miller, both of Chatham; two sisters, Helen H. Rakestraw and Elsie H. Moore, both of Reidsville, N.C.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Chatham Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Macon. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a daughter, Catherine B. Miller, 319 Military Drive, Chatham.
Scott Funeral Home of Chatham is in charge of arrangements.

Audie Jefferson

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Audie Lee Jefferson, 42, 535 University Drive, Waldorf, Md., died Sunday, May 12, 1996, in the Walter Reed Hospital of Washington, D.C.
Born Nov. 13, 1953, in Sumter, N.C., he was a son of Walter Wade Jefferson and Carolyn C. Jefferson, who survive.
He was married to Flordecita T. Jefferson, who also survives.
He was an OSI Special Agent in the U.S. Air Force. He was also of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents of Danville, and his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Tony Jefferson and Kevin Jefferson, both of the residence; one daughter, Terri Jefferson of California; two sisters, Sheree Lynch and Michelle Cook, both of Danville; and one brother, Michael Jefferson of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Barker Funeral Home, in Danville, Va., by Major Friend Walker. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his parents, 328 Ridgecrest Drive, Danville, Va.

Grace Norris

Grace E. Norris, 79, 439 Hermitage Drive, Apt. F, died Wednesday, May 15, 1996, in her residence.
She was born Feb. 2, 1917, in New York City.
While spending 35 years in Madrid, Spain, she was employed by the U.S. Air Force as a writer. She had lived in Danville for the past five years, and was a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church.
She was a also member of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.
Survivors include a son, Norris Jose Zuniga of Danville.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Dorothy Thomas. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Lillian Arnold

ROANOKE - Lillian Edith Arnold, 99, died Thursday, May 23, 1996.
She was married to Milton H. "Pete" Arnold, who survives, for 79 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include three sons, the Rev. Gene Arnold of Vinton, Maynard H. Arnold of Ridgeway and Robert D. Arnold of Ringgold; one daughter, Janie J. Jones; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday from the chapel of Lotz Funeral Home, in Roanoke, by the Rev. Claude Dykes and the Rev. Carter Sloan. Burial will be in Henry Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Thomas Harris

Thomas Benton Harris, 86, 229 Kenmore Drive, in Druid Hills, died Thursday, May 23, 1996, in Riverside Health Care Center, following several years of declining health.
Born May 19, 1910, in Danville, he was a son of Samuel J. Harris and Ellen Hall Harris.
He was married to Clarice Wynn Harris, who survives.
While spending his entire life in Danville, he was employed by Dan River Mills for 43 years in production control.
He was also a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church, where he served as choir director, a church lay leader, the men's Bible class teacher, and on the board of trustees.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Judith M. Harris of Raleigh, N.C., and Janice H. Overbey of Chatham; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. James Grogan and the Rev. Clay Knick. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

George Morgan Jr.

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - George Rose Morgan Jr., 64, of Marina Colony, died Tuesday, May 21, 1996, in Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born Jan. 12, 1932, in Greenville, he was a son of George and Mildred DeLorme Morgan.
He was married to JoAnn Boiter Morgan, who survives.
He was a 1954 honors graduate of Clemson University.
He had been in the Boy Scouts of America for 50 years, where he received the Silver Beaver award and served as past commissioner of the Blue Ridge Mountain Council.
He was a member of the Myrtle Beach Hamm Radio Operators Club.
He also served as a colonel with the Army Reserve for 30 years, until his retirement. He was a member of the Surfside Beach Rotary Club and the Greensboro Power Squadron, where he served as past commander and as a master aviator.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, George R. Morgan III of Colorado Springs, Colo., and M. Curran Morgan of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one stepson, F. Edwin Aiken of Greenville; one daughter, Elizabeth M. McCallister of Fox Point, Wis.; one brother, G.D. Morgan of Greenville; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday from the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection.
Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel, in Murrells Inlet, is in charge of arrangements.

Carlton Moore

CHATHAM - The funeral for Carlton Wayland Moore, 74, 2138 Weal Road, will be conducted 3 p.m. today from Hollywood Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Haywood Alcorn. Interment will be in Chatham Burial Park.
He died Wednesday, May 22, 1996, in Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born June 26, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Caleb Judson Moore Sr. and Mary Echols Moore.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Hollywood Baptist Church. He was also a member of Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include three brothers, E. Paige Moore of Dayton, Ohio, and Caleb J. Moore Jr. and George L. Moore, both of Chatham; and one sister, Phyllis M. Bennett of Chatham.
He was predeceased by a sister, Imogen Ramey; and a brother, Richard E. Moore.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Vera Moore

Vera Moore, 95, formerly of 251 Howeland Circle, died Thursday, May 23, 1996, in the Riverside Health Care Center.
Born June 29, 1900, in Spartanburg, S.C., she was a daughter of Charles E. Moore and Ann Argoe Moore.
While spending most of her adult life in Danville, she was employed by Belk Leggett for 32 years until her retirement in 1969. She was a member of the Belk Leggett Friendship Circle.
She was also a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church for 50 years.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. John LeGault.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Riley

A graveside service for Robert Lee Riley, 84, 62 Glen Oak Drive, will be conducted 11 a.m. today from Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Anthony Pollard.
He died Tuesday, May 21, 1996, in the Blue Ridge Nursing Center, following a decline in health since July. He had resided at the nursing home since Aug. 11.
Born Feb. 28, 1912, in Danville, he was a son of George P. Riley and Alma Morgan Riley.
He was married to Janie Lockett Riley, who died Nov. 20, 1993.
While spending his entire life in Danville, he was employed by Dan River Inc. as a water controller in the power plant for 50 years until his retirement at age 65.
He was a member of First Christian Church. He was also a member of the Improved Order of Red Men.
Survivors include two sisters, Eunice R. Adams of Danville and Ruth R. Webb of Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie Robertson

BLAIRS - Charlie Robertson, 73, 841 Mack Road, died Wednesday, May 22, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 10, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Hudley and Lillie Waller Robertson.
He was married to Patsy Robertson, who survives.
He was employed by Lebon Chemicals Inc. in Danville until his retirement.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Charles E. Robertson of Blairs and Steve J. Robertson of Manassas; four daughters, Edith Cook, Brenda L. Robertson, and Sarah P. Robertson, all of Blairs, and Kathy A. Waller of Java; four brothers, James W. Robertson and Linwood Robertson, both of Blairs, Joseph Robertson of Chatham and Woodrow Robertson of Danville; four sisters, Iona Sparks of Chatham, Belle A. Rudd, Roseamay Edmunds, and Lillie Frances Singletary, all of Bridgeport, Conn.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Frances Vaden; one brother; and two sisters.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, in Gretna, by the Rev. George H. Pass. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
