Irvin Shelton
CASCADE - The funeral for Irvin Daniel Shelton, 64, 5264 Whispering Pine Road, Cascade, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Vermillion. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
He died Wednesday, May 15, 1996, in his residence, following a month of declining health.
Born June 28, 1931, near Chatham, he was a son of William Henry Shelton and Lorena Shelton Shelton.
He was married
to Frances Keatts Shelton, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Whitmell and Brosville communities of Pittsylvania County.
He was employed by the Virginia Department of Transportation for 17 years as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement at age 62.
He was also of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Debra Shelton Painter of Cascade and Pamela Shelton Fricker of Danville; three sons, Charles Daniel Shelton of Danville, William Lee Shelton of Eden, N.C., and Rodney Irwin Shelton of Dry Fork; two sisters, Virginia Potter of Bachelor's Hall and Jane Haskins of Danville; five brothers, George E. Shelton, Larry Shelton, Gary Shelton, Bobby Shelton and Sammy Shelton, all of Danville; five grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Lyttleton Stamps
HOUSTON - Lyttleton Luther Stamps, 50, 955 Gardenia Drive, Houston, died Thursday, May 16, 1996.
Born Jan. 2, 1946, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of William Rufus Stamps and Myrtle Hammack Stamps, who survives.
He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and received his master's degree at Oregon State University.
He was employed by the Houston Chronicle as an international reporter. He also served in Vietnam.
He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother of Yanceyville, N.C., survivors include two sisters, Mary Anne Huskey of Greensboro, N.C., and Jo Ella Butner of Long Island, N.Y.; and two brothers, William David Stamps of Sanford, N.C., and Rufus Lea Stamps of Yanceyville, N.C.
Marley Funeral Home, in Yanceyville, N.C., is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.
Lonnie Stanfield
Lonnie D. Stanfield, 73, 230 Brightwell Drive, died Thursday, May 16, 1996, at 3090 North Main St.
Born Nov. 4, 1922, in Danville, he was a son of Willie L. Stanfield and Bertha Mustain Stanfield.
He was married
to Geneva Blalock Stanfield, who survives.
He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board, the Council of Ministries, and as the secretary of Sunday schools. He was also a member of the Methodist Men's Club and the Emmanuel Sunday school class.
While spending most of his life in Danville, he was employed by Dan River Inc. as a production control supervisor. He retired in 1979 from Disston Inc., where he worked as a production control supervisor.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He also served in the National Guard during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Betty Stanfield Fox of Danville; one brother, Garnett Stanfield of Greensboro, N.C.; four sisters, Bertha S. Stanley, Thelma S. Stanley, and Juanita S. Tarkenton, all of Greensboro, N.C., and Louise S. Davis of Danville; five stepbrothers; four stepsisters; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from St. Luke's United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ron Mateer and the Rev. Dave Palmer. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Shirley Adams
Shirley Jean Adams, 58, of 845 Melville Ave., on Friday, May 17, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 20, 1937, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Buster L. Adams and Mannie Grasty Adams.
She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Ray Adams of Monterey, Calif., and Clyde E. Adams of Danville; one daughter, Shirley L. Barrett of Danville; one sister, Gladys A. Poole of Ringgold; three brothers, James Adams of Ringgold, Lance Adams of Lorton, and Bobby L. Adams of Danville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph Cypress. Burial will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Betty Davis
Betty Bruce Daniels Davis, 63, of 421 Clarkson Drive, died Saturday, May 18, 1996, at the residence after a decline in health of nine months.
She had lived her entire life in Danville. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She belonged to The Wednesday Club and the Danville Garden Club. She was a graduate of Averett College.
She was married
to C. Raymond Davis on Dec. 27, 1952.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Major Stuart Daniel Davis of Hampton and Raymond "Bryan" Davis of the residence; one daughter, Gayle Elizabeth Davis of Rockingham, N.C.; one brother, E. Stokes Daniels Jr. of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by Dr. James Gardner. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Angela McDowell
Angela Barker McDowell, 39, of 160 Melrose Ave., died Saturday, May 18, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, after a decline in health of six months.
Born Feb. 22, 1957, in South Boston, she was a daughter of William Nelson Barker and Frances Warren Barker.
She married
Robert V. "Bobby" McDowell Jr. on June 29, 1979.
She had spent most of her life in Semora, N.C., and Danville. She had lived in Danville for 17 years. She was a homemaker and member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by one sister, Pamela L. Barker.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include her mother of Semora, N.C.; one daughter, Michele Carver of the residence; and two sisters, Valeria Barker of Semora, N.C., and Rita B. Wilkerson of Summerville, S.C.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lee Ellison. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Beatrice McDowell
Mrs. Beatrice Buckner McDowell, 80, of 218 Brentwood Drive, died Saturday, May 18, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a one-week stay and five-year decline in health.
Born Aug. 29, 1915, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Buckner.
She was married
to Robert L. McDowell who died in 1988.
She had spent all of her life in Danville. She was retired from Dan River Inc. after 50 years working as a spinner. She was a member of Dan River Retirees Club. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include one brother, Ed H. Lail of Axton.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Ted Guthrie
Ted Arnold Guthrie, 41, of 16314 Chinook Drive in Petersburg, died Wednesday, May 15, 1996, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 12, 1955, in Halifax County, he was a son of Erline C. Guthrie and Aubrey Raymond Guthrie.
Guthrie served in the U.S. Navy. He was married
to Robin Lee Guthrie.
He is of the Penecostal Holiness faith.
In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include four daughters, Jeanette Guthrie, Jewel Ann Guthrie, Alyssa Guthrie, Megan Guthrie, all of Finlay, Ohio; four sisters, Robin G. Taylor and Tiffany A. Guthrie, both of Yale, Cynthia G. Guthrie of Petersburg, and Vicky Jo Weese of Richmond; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial chapel by the Rev. Joey Yeatts. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
Truett Rhyne Holland
HIGH POINT, N.C. - Truett Rhyne Holland, 85, of 721 Gatewood Ave., died Saturday, May 18, 1996, in High Point Regional Hospital.
Born in Gaston County, he was a member of the Green Street Baptist Church in High Point.
Before retiring in 1981, he managed Richardson Department Store from 1959 to 1981. Prior to that, he managed Jones Department Stores in Thomasville and Asheboro.
Survivors include his wife Inez Wright Holland of the residence; three sons, Donald R. Holland of Badin Lake, Barry F. York of Thomasville, and Rodney York of High Point; two daughters, Vickie Holland Taylor of Danville, Va., and Jane Y. Jordan of Asheboro; one sister, Myrtle H. Barfield of Dallas; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Oaklawn cemetery in Asheboro by Dr. Elliot B. Stewart. Burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery.
The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro.
Rachel Lester
Rachel Owens Lester, 55, of 145 Franklin Turnpike, died May 18, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born Sept. 6, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Andy Berry Owens and Canney Harris Owens.
Lester lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, where she had worked with Durham Hoisery Mills until her health began to fail.
She was of the Baptist Faith.
Lester first married
William Green Massey and later married
Mr. Lester.
Survivors include three sons, Ronnie Massey of Danville, Billy Massey of Providence, N.C., and Wesley Massey of the residence; one daughter, Wanda L. Massey of Danville; one brother, Reecie N. Owens of Ringgold; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jack Robertson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Minnie Triplett
Minnie McNichols Triplett, 93, of 4584 Stillmeadow Road in Axton, died Saturday, May 18, 1996, at her her residence. She had been in declining health for 15 years.
Born Aug. 22, 1902, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Edd McNichols and Anna High McNichols.
Triplett spent all of her life in Pittsylvania County and had spent the past 60 years in the Sandy River community. A homemaker, she was a member of Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Oscar Triplett, who died in 1972, and her daughter Ruth Triplett.
Survivors include five daughters, Doris Earles and Dolores Cassada, both of Axton, Carolyn Pearman of Roanoke, and Jean Lowe and Faye Moore, both of Danville; three sons, Oakie Triplett of Vermont, Edward Triplett and Hillary Triplett, both of Axton; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. George Riggins III. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Samuel Hall
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - Samuel Garland Hall, 85, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Saturday, May 18, 1996, in the Bon-Secours Maria Manor Nursing Home of St. Petersburg.
Born in Danville, Va., he was a son of George Collins Hall and Eva Toler Hall.
He was married
to Louise H. Hall, who survives, for 60 years.
After moving to Florida in 1960, he became a member of First United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg. He was also the owner of Don's Northside Auto Parts in St. Petersburg.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, James R. Hall of St. Petersburg, and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. today from Memorial Park cemetery, in St. Petersburg, by the Rev. J. Marvin Sweat Jr.
