James Markham Jr.

CLARKSVILLE - James Roland Markham Jr., 60, 750 Lake View Road, Clarksville, died Monday, May 13, in his residence, following a brief illness.
Born in Durham, N.C., he was a son of James R. Markham and Carmen Owen Reaves Markham Sr.
He was married to Evelyn McKee Markham, who survives.
Prior to becoming disabled, he was employed by Service America Corporation.
He had lived in Clarksville since 1980, and was of the Free Will Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Kenneth R. Markham of Hillsborough, N.C.; a daughter, Linda Faye Davis of Blairs; two brothers, Larry W. Andrews Sr. of Hillsborough, N.C., and Charles E. Andrews of Efland, N.C.; five sisters, Hilda L. Parnell of Roxboro, N.C., Kay Fisher of Durham, N.C., Nancy G. Hamacher of Chester, S.C., Dorothy Mae Jenkins of Rocky Mount, and Brenda Sue Rasberry of Mebane, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Hudson Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
There is no service planned.

Pierre Moniot

NANCY, FRANCE - Pierre Moniot, 75, of Nancy, France, died Monday, May 13, 1996, following several months of declining health.
He was born August 1921, in France.
He was married to Marguerite Moniot.
Survivors include two daughters, Brigitte Bray of Danville, Va., and Frederique Marouffi of France; three sons, Pierre-Herve Moniot, Phillipe Moniot, and Olivier Moniot, all of France; 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday in Longuyon, France.

Audie Jefferson

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Audie Lee Jefferson, 42, 535 University Drive, Waldorf, Md., died Sunday, May 12, 1996, in the Walter Reed Hospital of Washington, D.C.
Born Nov. 13, 1953, in Sumter, N.C., he was a son of Walter Wade Jefferson and Carolyn C. Jefferson, who survive.
He was married to Flordecita T. Jefferson, who also survives.
He was an OSI Special Agent in the U.S. Air Force. He was also of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents of Danville, and his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Tony Jefferson and Kevin Jefferson, both of the residence; one daughter, Terri Jefferson of California; two sisters, Sheree Lynch and Michelle Cook, both of Danville; and one brother, Michael Jefferson of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Barker Funeral Home, in Danville, Va., by Major Friend Walker. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his parents, 328 Ridgecrest Drive, Danville, Va.

Grace Norris

Grace E. Norris, 79, 439 Hermitage Drive, Apt. F, died Wednesday, May 15, 1996, in her residence.
She was born Feb. 2, 1917, in New York City.
While spending 35 years in Madrid, Spain, she was employed by the U.S. Air Force as a writer. She had lived in Danville for the past five years, and was a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church.
She was a also member of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.
Survivors include a son, Norris Jose Zuniga of Danville.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Dorothy Thomas. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Ollie Ashworth

Ollie Carson "John" Ashworth, 69, 416 Ashworth Lane, died Friday, May 17, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center, following a heart attack.
Born July 22, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Ollie Robert Ashworth and Lulla Amos Ashworth Brumfield.
On Oct, 18, 1947, he was married to Naomi Rathbone Ashworth, who survives.
He was employed by North Main Antiques and Upholstery Shop, until opening his own, Ashworth's Upholstery Shop, in 1968. He was also a school bus driver for Pittsylvania County Schools, and operated a farm.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post #325.
He was also a member of Westover Hills Christian Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Tina Ashworth Sparks of Danville and Lisa Ashworth Nichols of Nampha, Idaho; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday from North Main Baptist Church by the Rev. Roy Parker, Dr. Eddie Davis, and the Rev. Wayne Crews. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park, with graveside rites being held by American Legion Post #325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

John Bennett Jr.

John Ulysses Bennett Jr., 41, 234 Girard St., died Thursday, May 16, 1996, in his residence.
Born Feb. 2, 1955, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John U. Bennett Sr., who survives, and Margaret Womack.
He was a client for Goodwill Industries.
In addition to his father of the residence, survivors include one brother, Don Bennett of Portsmouth; and one sister, Marietta Y. Bennett of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from the memorial chapel of Cunningham and Hughes. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The body may be viewed 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Joyce Cook

A graveside service for Joyce Shumate Cook, 84, formerly of Holiday Village, will be conducted 11 a.m. today from Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
She died Thursday, May 16, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 11, 1911, in the Cascade community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Harden Shumate and Minnie Cox Shumate.
She was married to Larry E. Cook, who died January 1977.
While spending all of her life in the Danville area, she lived mostly in the Westover Drive area, and spent seven years at Holiday Village.
She was employed as a sales clerk. She was also a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Ernestine S. Lloyd of Danville and Mary F. Hollingsworth of Fayetteville, N.C.
She was predeceased by a sister, Margaret S. Collis; and two brothers, T. Harden Shumate and Edwin M. Shumate.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her brother-in-law, Harry M. Collis, 134 Knollwood Terrace.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LaVaille Hogan

NEWPORT NEWS - LaVaille Cox Hogan, 90, died Friday, May 17, 1996.
Born in Danville in 1905, she was a daughter of Eliza Custer Cox and Charles Daniel Cox.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Harvey Hogan.
She received her R.N. degree from Shenandoah Hospital School of Nursing in Roanoke.
She was employed by Averett College as a nurse and dietitian for many years.
She was also a former member of West Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, LaVaille "Bobbe Gray" H. Jebson of Newport News; two sisters, Margaret C. Meyer of Norfolk and Helen C. Cox of Grafton; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke by Dr. John S. Carpenter Jr., pastor of North Riverside Baptist Church.
Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News, is in charge of arrangements.

Eliza Price-Dale

Eliza Russell Price-Dale, 92, 512 Arnett Road, died Tuesday, May 14, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 15, 1903, in Danville, she was a daughter of Judge Russell and Sally Adams Russell.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Thomas Price, and also by her second husband, Samuel Dale.
She was owner and operator of the Price Home for the Aged.
At an early age, she joined James Street Holiness Street. Later, she became a member of Evening Light Holiness Church. She was also an active member and long-time pianist of Mount Sinai Glorious Church of God.
She was also a member of the Smith Chapel Willing Workers and Missionary Club.
Survivors include one son, James Price of Port Arthur, Texas; one daughter, Brenda Price-Neal; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Mount Sinai Glorious Church of God by Bishop A.R. Linder. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

H. Keister Pruitt

CHATHAM - H. Keister Pruitt, 63, 1520 Jones Mill Road, Chatham, died Friday, May 17, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 1, 1933, in Halifax County, he was a son of Harvey Pruitt and Nannie Dawson Pruitt, who survives.
He was married to Betty Satterfield Pruitt, who survives.
While living most of his life in Pittsylvania County, he was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.
He was employed by K-Mart as a garden shop manager for 21 years, until his retirement in 1986. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Danville, survivors include one son, Brian Keith Pruitt of Danville; one daughter, Michelle Pruitt Burke of Danville; one brother, Preston Pruitt of Burlington, N.C.; three sisters, Gladys P. Hamlette, Doris P. Scott and Helen P. Jackson, all of Danville; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Wrenn Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Deckie Shelton

SUTHERLIN - The funeral for Deckie Edwards Shelton, 94, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Jimmy Burks. Burial will be in the Shelton-Banks Family cemetery, off 58 East, Sutherlin.
She died Wednesday, May 15, 1996, at her son's residence in Sutherlin.
Born July 17, 1901, in Unicoy County, Tenn., she was a daughter of James Frank Edwards and Rachel Clouse Edwards.
She was married to Gay Shelton, who died April 10, 1983.
She had been a resident of Sutherlin since 1919. She was also a member of Lakewood Evanglical Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, James Robert Shelton of Sutherlin and Charles Ernest Shelton of Seattle; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the son's residence, 7823 South Boston Hwy., Sutherlin.
