Viola Eanes
Viola B. Eanes, 84, 826 Edmonds St., died Friday, May 10, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center, following two years of declining health.
Born June 24, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Louis Barbour and Sally Wells Barbour.
She was married
to Roy T. Eanes, who died Nov. 29, 1971.
While spending all of her life in Danville, she was employed by Danville Memorial Hospital as a ward helper for 21 years, until her retirement.
She was a member of Riveroak Church of God.
Survivors include three sons, Roy T. Eanes Jr. of Houston, Texas, Jerry Wayne Eanes and Perry Lane Eanes, both of Danville; two daughters, Betty Jane Toler of New Bern, N.C., and Vicky Dawn Kiser of Charleston, S.C.; three sisters, Lottie Eanes of Pittsylvania County, Carrie Ferrell of Danville, and Eva Amos of Callands; one brother, Ran Barbour of Callands; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

C.R. Turner
CHATHAM - C.R. "Ran" Turner, 81, 4840 Spring Garden Road, Chatham, died Friday, May 10, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 4, 1915, in Axton, he was a son of Charles Roy Turner and Lula Eloise Turner. He was raised in Chatham by his paternal uncle and aunt, C.E. and Minnie Terry.
He was married
to Dorothy Grove Turner, who survives.
He was a 1933 graduate of Hargrave Military Academy, and also a graduate of Smithdeal Massey Business College in Richmond.
He was first employed by Planters Bank, in Chatham, as a cashier. Then, he worked at Virginia Bank and Trust Co., in Danville, for 34 years. He was president of the bank for 16 years, until his retirement in 1980. He was also a member of the bank's board of directors for many years.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He also served in the European Theater, and in his early years served with Company B 176th Infantry, 29th Division. He also served during the Normandy invasion, and after being wounded Oct. 7, 1944, near Ubach, Germany, was awarded the Purple Heart medal.
He was a former superintendent of Chatham Baptist Church. He was a member of Spring Garden Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder.
He was a lifetime member of Sertoma International, and served on the board of directors of Faith Home Inc., in Blairs. He was also a member of Carter Lodge No. 323 A.F. and A.M., and Pittsylvania Lodge No. 24 A.F. and A.M., in Chatham, where he served as past master. He was also a member of the Virginia Bankers Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, and the Danville Shrine Club.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, John Randolph Turner of Roanoke, Dr. Mark Grove Turner of Richmond, and Richard Charles Turner of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, William Garland Turner of Chatham; one foster brother, Dr. William S. Terry of Portsmouth; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Spring Garden Presbyterian Church by the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr., and the Rev. Patrick Winkler. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, with Masonic rites being performed by Carter Lodge No. 323 A.F. and A.M. and Pittsylvania Lodge No. 24 A.F. and A.M.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Willie White
Willie Jerry White, 60, 139 Beavers Mill Road, died Thursday, May 9, 1996, at the Duke University Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Born Sept. 27, 1935, in Danville, he was a son of Willie White Sr., and Lucille Redd White.
He was married
to Gurdine Wilson White, who survives.
He was a graduate of Southside High School.
He was employed by State Electronics Corporation as a purchasing agent. He was also an associate of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home.
He was a member of North New Hope Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Andrew White of Danville; and one sister, Connie Christian of Philadelphia.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment will be at Highland Burial Park.

Henry Yancey
ARLINGTON - Henry Stephen Yancey, 88, formerly of 1218 Branch St., died Tuesday, May 7, 1996, at Cherrydale Health Care Center of Arlington.
Born Sept. 14, 1907, in Danville, he was a son of Weldon Yancey and Henrietta L. Yancey.
He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary H. Fuller of Washington, D.C., Patricia Glenn of Suitland, Md., and Carolyn Steele of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Lois Y. Lyerly of Danville; 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted noon Monday from Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth. Burial will be in Highland cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Tessie Lewis, 121 Mabin St., Danville.

BLAIRS - Marion Elizabeth East, infant, of 1000 Lawless Creek Road, died Saturday, May 11, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 11, 1996, in Danville, she was a daughter of Dewey Lee East and Angela East.
In addition to the parents, survivors include her paternal grandparents, Carol East and Edward East, both of Danville; maternal grandparents, Carole Barnett and Ken Barnett, both of Palatka, Fla.; grandparents, Shirley Terrell and David Terrell, both of Cascade; and one brother, Wesley A. East, of the home.
A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday at the Owens Family cemetery by the Rev. Larry Hill.

Clarence Hairston
Clarence Albert Hairston Sr., 67, of 353 Oak Hill Road, died Friday, May 10, 1996 at his residence.
Born Jan. 6, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Carrie Millner and Jessie James Hairston.
He was married
to Mildred Leftwich Hairston, who survives.
He was a retired Dan River Inc. employee. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Cascade, where he was a Sunday school teacher and a deacon.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Mastin Wayne Hairston of Danville; two daughters, Gloria Harris of Martinsville and Carolyn Little of Danville; two sisters, Rodessa Via of Danville and Ruby Waller of Martinsville; two brothers, Levi Hairston of Danville and Jessie Hairston of Washington, D.C.; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at Shiloh Baptist Church, U.S. 58 west, Cascade, by the Rev. John Tinsley. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Edward Pilson
STUART - Edward Valentine Pilson, 79, of Route 4, died Saturday, May 11, 1996, in the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Born July 21, 1916, in the Buffalo Ridge community in Patrick County, he was a son of Dallas V. Pilson and Alpha Morrison Pilson.
He graduated from Blue Ridge Mission School in Buffalo Ridge.
Before retiring, he was a businessman in the lumbering and fruit growing industry.
He served on the Patrick County Board of Supervisors for 16 years. He was chairman of the board for supervisors for 4 years.
He was a charter member of Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent for 47 years.
He served on the board of the Virginia Farm Bureau and was a member of the Gideons.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine Dawson Pilson, of the home; one daughter, Barbara Walvius of Woodbridge; three sons, Edward Pilson Jr., Ronnie Pilson and Richard Pilson, all of Stuart; two sisters, Clara Smart of Stuart and Wilma Foley of Amelia; four brothers, Roy Pilson, Ralph Pilson and Alfred Pilson, all of Stuart and Eugene Pilson of Danville; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Jonathan Todd. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Remus Haley
GRETNA - Remus Ramsey Haley, 62, of 10389 Rockford School Road, died Sunday morning, May 12, 1996, in The University of Viginia Hospital at Charlottesville.
Born Aug. 23, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Ned Haley and Annie Bell Logan Haley.
Prior to retiring due to disability, he was a re-conditioner manager at Feller's Chevolet in Altavista, and was the owner of Remus Upholstery.
He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he had served as treasurer, trustee, deacon, sexton, Sunday school teacher, and president of the male chorus. He was also a member of the Staunton River Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Rosa M. Haley of the residence; one son, Danny R. Haley of Vinton; three daughters, Sheilda H. Poindexter of Gretna, Gladys E. (Penny) Haley of Durham, N.C., and Rhonda H. Humbles of Evington; one brother, Joe Haley of Hurt; five sisters, Rachel Myers, Caroline Hodnett and Thelma Barksdale all of Gretna; Pattie Watson of Climax and Louise Hubbard of Hurt; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cyncella Haley Brown; two brothers, Walter Haley and Edward Haley; and one sister, Emma Whelston.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. S.G. Moore. Burial will be in the Mt. Olive Baptist Church cemetery.

Geneva Johnson
DRY FORK - Edda Geneva Marshall Lewis Johnson, 67, of 1284 Jones Mill Road, died Sunday morning, May 12, 1996, at her home.
Born April 13, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Chris Marshall and Kathleen Rowland Marshall.
She had retired from the Weave Room at Dan River Inc., and was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was married
to Noel Johnson who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four half-sisters, June Hubbard of Chatham, Nancy Craddock of Dry Fork; and Betty Earley and Gloria Mae Barts both of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Roger Collins and the Rev. Eugene Larkin. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mattie Barksdale
O'FALLON, ILL. - Mattie Faris Barksdale, 83, of O'Fallon, Ill., and formerly of Gretna, died Saturday, May 11, 1996, in St. Paul's Home for the Aged, in Belleville.
Born July 25, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of George and Sally Lane Faris.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Barksdale Jr.; a son, Ronald Barksdale; and a daughter, Merle Davis Hare. She was also predeceased by her foster parents, Jack and Nellie Tucker.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
She is survived by five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 10 a.m. today in O'Fallon. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Greenfield Baptist Church cemetery in Gretna by Dr. John Ruef.
The family will receive friends 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, in Gretna, and other times at Greenwood, the home of Irene and Charlie Fry, Hickeys Road, Gretna.
Minnie Wilson
Minnie Adkins Wilson, 67, 613 Monroe St., died Saturday, May 11, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.
Born June 6, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter Pealie M. and William H. Adkins.
She was married
to Woodrow Wilson, who died July 22, 1983.
Survivors include five sons, Charlie Wilson Sr., Tony Wilson, John Wilson and William Wilson, all of Danville, and Thomas Wilson of Capron; two daughters, Eunica Wilson of the residence and Carol Elliott of Danville; two sisters, Bertha Gatewood and Emma Jones, both of Danville; and six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Highland Burial Park.
