Julius Crawford
EUFAULA, OKLA. - Julius Edgar Crawford, 87, of Route 1, Box 165-A, Council Hill, Okla., died Tuesday, May 7, 1996, in Eufaula, Okla., following ten years of declining health.
Born Aug. 27, 1908, in Macon, Ga., he was a son of James C. Crawford and Lillie Mae Suddarth Crawford.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Mevelene Gauldin Crawford, who died in 1960, and also by his second wife, Nancy Crawford, who died in 1992.
While spending most of his life in Danville, he was employed by Dan River Inc. as a loom fixer, until his retirement.
He spent the past 15 years in Oklahoma. He was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Shelby Rakes of Fieldale, Va., and Barbara Newton of Council Hill; two brothers, J.C. Crawford and Garnett Crawford, both of Danville, Va.; one sister, Evelyn Towler of Danville; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Jack Robertson.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his brother, J.C. Crawford, 54 Fairfield Ave.
Earl Lewis Jr.
SOUTH BOSTON - Earl Linwood "Byrd" Lewis Jr., 72, Route 3, South Boston, died Tuesday, May 7, 1996, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 22, 1923, in Person County, N.C., he was a son of Earl Linwood Lewis Sr. and Vergie Satterfield Lewis.
He was married
to Reva Trammell Lewis, who survives.
He was a member of Arbor Baptist Church. He was also a member of Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department and the Vernon Hill Hunting Club.
He was an umpire for the Halifax County Dixie Youth and the Babe Ruth Baseball Leagues.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Linda L. Tate and Renee L. White, both of South Boston; two sons, L. Wayne Lewis of Sneads Ferry, N.C., and Ricky Earl Lewis of Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters, Martha L. Terry of Danville, Laura L. Millhiser of South Boston, and Betty Jean L. Loftis of Sutherlin; four brothers, Herman Lewis, Emmett Lewis, Aubrey Lewis, and Addison Lewis, all of Halifax; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Michael Lynn Lewis; a sister, Vernie L. Price; and two brothers, Warner Lewis and Theodore Lewis.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Arbor Baptist Church by the Rev. Averette Witcher and the Rev. Wayne Carter. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Powell Funeral Home, in South Boston, and other times at the residence.
Calvin Mims
Mainard Calvin Mims, 40, 21 Oak Ridge Ave., died Wednesday, April 8, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 30, 1956, in Franklin County, he was a son of Mainard Munsey Hodges and Myrtle Gregory Mims, who survives.
On Dec. 18, 1981, he was married
to Natalie Hollie Mims, who survives.
He was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, and his mother of Danville, survivors include his stepfather, George Wesley Mims Sr. of Danville; one daughter, Hollie Sue Mims of the residence; three brothers, Ray Mims of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Jerry Mims of Keeling, and Wesley Mims of Danville; and three sisters, Shirley Pleasant and Donna Kurr, both of Danville, and Brenda Self of Greensboro, N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jim Grogan and the Rev. Russell East III.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 21 Oak Ridge Ave., and also at the residence of George and Myrtle Mims, 184 Melrose Drive.

Callie Reynolds
CHATHAM - Callie Estelle Merricks Reynolds, 81, Route 3, Chatham, died Wednesday, May 8, 1996, in her residence.
Born Nov. 22, 1915, she was a daughter of Claude Merricks and Sally Austin Merricks.
She was predeceased by her husband, Russell William Reynolds.
She was a member of Greenpond Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Russell Ward Reynolds of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Sarah R. McIvor of Lynchburg, and Deborah R. Reynolds of Chatham; three sisters, Mamie M. Adkins, Virgie M. Wertz, and Iva M. Bryant, all of Danville; two brothers, Carlton Merricks of Danville and Billy Merricks of Callands; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Michael N. Reynolds.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. from Greenpond Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. R.G. Rowland.

Elizabeth Bateman
CHATTANOOGA, TENN. - Elizabeth "Liz" Jane Mazlo Bateman, 76, a resident of East Brainerd, died Tuesday, May 7, 1996, in a Chattanooga hospital.
She was born April 11, 1920, in Chicago, Ill.
She was married
to George G. Bateman, who survives.
She was a 1937 graduate of Waukegan Township High School in Waukegan, Ill.
She had been a resident of Chattanooga for the past 18 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Nancy Wilborn and Debra Robertson, both of Danville; three sisters, Mary Amundson of Gurnee, Ill., Irene Bower of Thornton, Colo., and Sally Miller of Sleepy Hollow, Ill.; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. today from the east chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home by the Elder Rick Carlton. The family will receive friends 12:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Sandra Carniol
FOREST - Sandra Goad Carniol, 50, 108 Lake Ridge Drive, Forest, died Wednesday, May 8, 1996, at her residence.
Born Dec. 5, 1945, in Dry Fork, she was a daughter of Perry Goad and Hattie Murphy Goad.
She was married
to Glenn Carniol, who survives.
She was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church. She was also a former elementary school teacher.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Justin Mitchell Carniol of Lynchburg, one daughter, Jessica Mary Carniol of Lynchburg; three sisters, Clara Oakes of Danville, Pauline Evans of Lakeland, Fla., and Joyce Starmont of N.C.; and two brothers, Mac Goad and Earl Goad, both of Danville.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Warren Goad, Paul Goad, and Osbey Goad.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from the chapel of Woodall-Tharp Funeral Home, in Lynchburg, by the Rev. James Moon. Burial will be in Oakland Methodist Church cemetery, in Dry Fork.

Matthew Montgomery
Matthew Lee Montgomery, 19, Route 1, Box 1258, Danville, in the Brosville community, died Thursday, May 9, 1996, following an automobile accident.
Born May 14, 1976, in Danville, he was a son of James Wesley Montgomery and Vicki Buckner Montgomery.
He spent all of his life in the Brosville community. He graduated from Tunstall High School in 1994, where he served as a drum major in the band, and was also a member of the Honor Society.
He was a junior at James Madison University, where he was a major in foreign language. He was the JMU Student Government treasurer, and also served on the Class Ring Committee.
He attended Brosville United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents of Brosville, survivors include his maternal grandparents, Edward and Katherine Buckner of Alton; his paternal grandmother, Rachel Motley Montgomery of Brosville; his maternal great-grandmother, Mildred Buckner of Alton; and two half-sisters, Mary Sue Gibson of Brosville, and Sara Lyn Strickland of Peachland, N.C.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Glenn Updike Jr.
Dr. Glenn B. Updike Jr. of Danville, died Wednesday, May 8, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 25, 1926, he was a son of Glenn B. Updike Sr. and Annie Leigh Herndon Updike.
He was married
to Elizabeth Boatwright Updike, who survives.
He practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Danville from 1958 until his retirement in 1991. He was also associated with the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.
He graduated from George Washington High School in 1944. He received his degrees from the University of Va., and the UVa. School of Medicine. As an alumnus of UVa., he served on several committees and was president of several organizations.
He served as president of the Medical Society of Virginia, from 1987-1988.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy, aboard the U.S.S. Midway.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
In the Danville community, he was past president and served on the Board of Directors for Stratford College, and was also past president of the United Way of Danville.
He was also a member of the Selective Service Appeals Board and was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Leigh Updike of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; two sons, Glenn B. Updike III of Lynchburg, and John B. Updike of Charlottesville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
A private committal service will be held Saturday.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Martha Walton
Martha Widdifield Walton, 73, 174 Beech Ave., died Thursday, May 9, 1996, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 22, 1922, she was a daughter of Charlie Widdifield and Annie Emerson Widdifield.
She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was employed by the National Underwriters Association in Washington, D.C., until her retirement.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Carter Jefferson of Danville; one brother, Clarence Widdifield of Danville; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Annette Ellen Carter.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Joe. M. Beck. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, and other times at the residence of Walter and Carolyn Jefferson, 328 Ridgecrest Drive.
Elizabeth Crowder
Elizabeth McDaniel Crowder, 92, 115 North Main St., Apt. B., died Friday, May 10, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center, following 12 years of declining health.
Born Jan. 4, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charles Edward McDaniel and Mary Rebecca Midkiff McDaniel.
She was predeceased by her husband, George Thomas Crowder, who died March 12, 1973, and also by two sons, Earl W. Crowder and Dennis M. Crowder; and one daughter, Beatrice Crowder Kirks.
She spent most of her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County, where she was a homemaker.
She was also a member of The Tabernacle.
Survivors include one son, Jesse C. Crowder of Danville; five daughters, Adele R. Crowder, Isma F. Crowder, Viola T. Bryant, and Ethel C. Eanes, all of Danville, and Verna A. McDaniel of Pelham, N.C.; one brother, Noel McDaniel of Reidsville, N.C.; a granddaughter, Brenda Elliott, who was raised by Mrs. Crowder; 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from The Tabernacle by the Rev. Lamaar Mooneyham and the Rev. Robert J. Barber Jr. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.
