Edna Harper
Edna Mae Adams Harper, 74, 144 Hamilton St., died Saturday, May 4, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 24, 1921, she was a daughter of Nathaniel Adams and Martha Hampton Adams.
She was married
to Samuel G. Harper, who survives.
She was employed by Dan River Inc., until her retirement. She was also a member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Carolyn H. Laviscount of Greensboro, N.C., and Carnell H. Harrison of Danville; one son, Leonard Harper of Danville; two brothers, Donald Adams of Hampton, and Robert Adams of Washington, D.C.; six sisters, Odessa Harris of Danville, Mary Gordon of Bloomfield, Conn., Rosie Lopez of Fairfield, Calif., Clara Hairston of Newport News, Selena Peterson of Atlantic City, N.J., and Dorothy Adams of Long Island, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Jones Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Hayes McConnell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Eugene Motley
HAYES - Eugene Marion Motley Sr., 73, died Monday, May 6, 1996.
He was a native of Chatham.
He was married
to Alma W. Motley, who survives, for 50 years.
While serving in World War II, he was a captive and escapee during the Battle of the Bulge.
He was employed by Higgerson and Buchanan, in Chesapeake. He also worked for Motley Construction, and also for K & E Construction, in Hayes.
In his later years, he was a gardener.
He was a member of Providence Baptist Church, in Ordinary. He was also a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 886, and of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7791, in Gloucester.
In addition to his wife of Hayes, survivors include one daughter, Vickie Glenn of Hayes; two sons, Eugene Marion Motley Jr. of Hampton, and Ralph William Motley Sr. of Woods Cross Roads; two sisters, Marion Green of Hayes, and Beatrice Stanfield of Danville; one brother, Maurice Motley of Gloucester Point; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Providence Baptist Church by the Rev. Ray Goude Sr., and the Rev. Donald Ambrose. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Hogg Funeral Home, in Gloucester Point.
Leighton Wall Jr.
ARLINGTON - Leighton L. Wall Jr., 55, of Arlington, and formerly of Roanoke, died Sunday, May 5, 1996.
He was a son of Leighton L. Wall Sr., and Marguerite W. Wall.
He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and VPI.
He was retired from George Washington University.
He was also a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke.
A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from Evergreen Burial Park by Dr. Harry Y. Gamble.

Durel Carson Sr.
Durel Thomas Carson Sr., 68, 196 Treadway Road, died Tuesday, May 7, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in the hospital four days.
Born Nov. 21, 1927, in Statesville, N.C., he was a son of Wade Clarence Carson and Mae Harriett Hammer.
He was first married
to Louise T. Carson, who died Sept. 5, 1993. He was then married
to Audrey Riddle Carson, who survives.
While spending most of his life in the Danville area, he was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for 16 years, until his retirement.
He was also a member of Westover Baptist, where he served as a deacon.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his second wife, survivors include three sons, Raymond E. Carson of Keeling, and Roger D. Carson and D.T. Carson Jr., both of Danville; two daughters, Rachel H. Orrell of Belmont, N.C., and Doris H. Younger of Halifax; two stepsons, Richard Riddle and Michael Riddle, both of Danville; three brothers, Haskel Carson of Anaheim, Calif., Hugh Carson of Huntsville, Ala., and Ronnie Carson of Danville; 11 grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Randy A. Carson.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Robert Vermillion and the Rev. Doug Barber. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 Thursday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Pete Collie
Hugh Peters "Pete" Collie, 115 Wilton Ave., died Sunday, May 5, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 3, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of J.T. "Jamsie" Collie and Sarah Elizabeth Slayton.
He was married
to Virginia Bryant Collie, who survives.
He was employed by Eastern Electric Co., in Lynchburg, as a salesman.
He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, A.A.R.P. and T.P.A.
He was also a member of West Main Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two brothers, Jason T. Collie of Ruffin, N.C., and Marvin E. Collie of Ringgold; and one sister, Carolyn C. Baumgarner of Dallas.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from West Main Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce Wilson. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Charlotte Fitzgerald
ASHLAND - Charlotte D. Fitzgerald, 46, of Ashland, and formerly of Route 5, Chatham, died Saturday, May 4, 1996.
She was the associate professor and chairwoman of the Sociology department at Randolph Macon College in Ashland, having been employed by the college since 1982. She was active in several organizations at the college.
She was awarded the Thomas Branch Award for Excellence in Teaching, which is the college's highest teaching award, in 1984 and 1987. She was also the college's nominee for the 1993 Professor of the Year Award.
She had previously served on the faculty at Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C., and at Christopher Newport College, now known as Christopher Newport University.
She earned her degrees from Hampton Institute, the University of Virginia, and from the University of North Carolina.
She was secretary of the Hanover County Black Heritage Society and was a court appointed special advocate for the county.
Survivors include three sisters, Deloris Crews of Danville, and Jacqueline McDonald and Tracey Morris, both of Philadelphia.
The funeral will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Thursday from Fairview Baptist Church, Gretna, by the Rev. Hubert White.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Deloris Crews, 2359 Ridge Road, Danville.

Roy Hawkins
Roy Keen Hawkins, 76, 136 Cheryl Drive, died Tuesday, May 7, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 3, 1919, in Charlottesville, he was a son of Robert S. and Bessie Perkins Hawkins.
He was married
to Eleanor D. Hawkins, who survives.
He was owner and operator of Stanley's Barber Shop for 32 years.
He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
He was also a member of American Legion Memorial Post #325, and Archer T. Gammon Chapter 19, Disabled American Veterans.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the 501st Infantry Airborne Division.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Brenda J. Hawkins of the residence; one son, Robert K. Hawkins of Alton; two sisters, Ruby Fielding and Polly Rogoll, both of Charlottesville; and one brother, James C. Hawkins of Williamsburg.
He was predeceased by a sister, Emma Johnson; and three brothers, Joseph Hawkins, Lawrence Hawkins and Samuel Hawkins.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from the chapel of Barker Funeral Home by Dr. Walter Graham, the Rev. Jim Klinefelter and the Rev. Ronald Mateer. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Valerie Lynch
Valerie Barbour Lynch, 63, 205 Franklin Turnpike, died Tuesday, May 7, 1996, in her residence, following a three-week hospital stay.
Born July 22, 1932, in Princeton, N.J., she was a daughter of Percy Hunter Barbour and Bessie Parrish Watlington Barbour.
On Nov. 24, 1949, she was married
to Sherman Edward Lynch, who survives.
While spending most of her life in Danville, she was employed by Wicks Lumber Co. until her retirement. After retiring, she worked part-time for Garrett's Tax Service.
She was also the weather observer for the U.S. Weather Bureau, and broadcasted the weather on WBTM radio for many years.
She was a member of Mount Herman Baptist Church. She also served as Girl Scout Leader for several years.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Vickie Gail Lynch of Blairs and Beverly Lynch Rust of Danville; one brother, Calvin M. Barbour of Danville; two sisters, Eloise B. Self of Emporia and Juanita B. Adams of Taylor, Mich.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, by the Rev. Don Davidson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Alice Motley
ABINGDON - Alice Lamkin Motley, 96, died Monday, May 6, 1996, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Paul and Fannie Burch Lamkin.
She was predeceased by her husband, Virgil Atwell Motley Sr.
She lived in Gretna until 1990, when she moved to Cedar Lawn Convalescent Home in Abingdon.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Gretna. She was also a former worthy matron of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by one daughter, Betty Glore of Abingdon; one son, Dr. Virgil Atwell Motley Jr. of Abingdon; one sister, Jeanette Allison of Gretna; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Annie Murphy and Helen Andrews; and two brothers, John Paul Lamkin Jr. and Curtis Lee Lamkin.
The funeral will be conducted 12:30 p.m. Thursday from St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Abingdon, by the Rev. Victor C. Mansfield.
A graveside service will also be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Gretna Burial Park by the Rev. Dr. John Ruef.

Mary White
Mary Harper White, 192 Clarks Mills Road, died Sunday, May 5, 1996, in her residence.
Born March 7, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the Rev. Charles Harper and Creasy Harper.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph White.
She was employed by Dibrell Brothers Tobacco Co. until her retirement. She was also a member of White Rock Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Hattie Bennett of Danville, Mary Witherspoon of Lawnside, N.J., and Lizzie Green of Staunton; one brother, James Harper of Ringgold; and a number of grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted noon Thursday from White Rock Baptist Church, Mountain Hill, by the Rev. Curtis Strader. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
