DAVIS
Edwin Winston Davis was born on December 18, 1914. He entered into eternal rest Wednesday, November 14, 2001 at Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. He was one of six surviving children born to William Ellis Davis and Dorcas Pettus Davis in Chase City, Virginia. All of his young years were spent in Virginia where he graduated from Thyne Institute in Chase City, and attended St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville. In his early adult years, Edwin was the proprietor of a grocery store and service station in Fairview, Va. He moved to Brooklyn, New York in the 1940s where he was to spend the largest portion of his adult life. He continued his educational pursuits, graduating from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and pursuing additional studies at the Westinghouse Laboratories in Orange, N.J. and the Edison School of Technology in Edison, N.J. His career as a design engineer of tools and dies kept him on the outing edge of innovative mechanical devices. During the war years, Edwin worked for the Sperry Aircraft Company developing new technology for aircraft. His work as part of the creative team designing the gyroscope was so outstanding that he received high recognition and was deferred from serving in the armed services. He was deemed to be far more valuable to the war efforts through the continuation of his design work. Always active, energetic and interested in issues affecting the community, Edwin purchased several houses in Brooklyn and became involved in real estate. He became active in politics and served for thirteen years as the Treasurer of the Stuyvesant Democratic Club. Among his colleagues were Shirley Chisolm and Judge William Thompson. They worked diligently and successfully to increase the number of people of color in elected offices. They encouraged their community to register and vote long before there were Voter Registration Drives. They addressed issues of concern for the entire community. On November 11, 1967, Edwin married Muriel Fenty, and in August of 1982 they retired to Chase City, Va. Edwin's nature did not allow him to "sit on the porch and watch the cars go by." Instead he bought real estate, built a new home, opened a business selling refurbished appliances and immersed himself in the civic affairs of the town. Edwin was a member of the Chase City Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Virginia Black Caucus. He was the President of the local branch of the NAACP for six years. He appeared before the United States Congress to testify on educational issues. He was an elder in Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was the Treasurer of the Circle of Friends for the Thyne Memorial. He was, always doing, always helping, always striving to make things better for himself, his loved ones and the people around him. He will be truly missed. He leaves to remember him with love and affection, his wife of 34 years, Muriel Fenty S. Davis; his sisters, Angelum Davis Jackson of Howard Beach, N.Y., and Jessie Bennett of Teaneck, N.J. His remains rest at Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1304 North Main St., Chase City, Va., where funeral services will be held Sunday, November 18, 2001 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Sylvester Bullock officiating. Burial will follow in the Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Chase City, Va.
