Evelyn Jordan
Evelyn James Jordan, 91, of Lynchburg, died Monday, July 22, 1996, in her home in Westminster Canterbury.
Born May 26, 1907, she was a daughter of Julian C. Jordan and Emma Evelyn James Jordan.
She was educated at Randolph Macon Institute and Hollins College, and was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church. She was active in the Wednesday Club, the Garden Club of Danville and the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History.
Survivors include one brother, Matthew P. Jordan of Danville.
A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Richard Cobb at Green Hill cemetery.
Pierre L. Pritchett
Seaman Pierre Lamont Pritchett, 23, of 285 Belmeade Court, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 20.
Born Oct. 1, 1972, in Washington D.C., he was a son of Mattie Lee Moore and Willie Pritchett.
He was a graduate of George Washington High School and was a seaman in the United States Navy. He completed recruit training at Great Lakes, Ill., and was assigned to the USS Yorktown in Norfolk. During his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
In addition to his parents survivors include one sister, Kitrina Pritchett; three brothers, Keith Pritchett, Eric Pritchett and Anthony Pritchett; his maternal and paternal grandmothers, May S. Payne and Marie Peoples.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from the Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home chapel by the Bishop Lawrence Campbell. Interment will be at the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 285 Belmeade Court.
Mary Sue Stroud Walker
Mary Sue Stroud Walker, 91, of 818 Holland Road, died Tuesday morning, July 23, 1996, at her residence after a three-year decline in health.
Born June 2, 1905, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of William Thomas Walker and Annie Ferguson Walker.
She lived on Holland Road for the past 60 years and was employed in the No. 5 Sewing Room at Dan River Mills for 14 years. She retired in 1947 due to bad health.
She was a member of Holland Road Baptist Church.
She was married
to Stanley Stroud who died May 7, 1967.
She was later married
to Samuel Preston Walker who died in February 1990.
Survivors include one daughter, Hellon Stroud Barrett of the residence; one son, Homer Ralph Stroud of Fredericksburg; two sisters, Louise Scearce of Martinsville and Peggy Hawley of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Harold Chilton. Burial will follow in Schoolfield cemetery.
Thelma Branch
Thelma Motley Branch, 60, of 78 Dudley St., died Sunday, July 21, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by Bishop Peggy Motley. Interment will be in the Oak Hill cemetery.
Born Feb. 5, 1936, she was the daughter of Roland Avery and Ollie Culley.
She was married
to Nephew Branch Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a member of the Holy Tabernacle Church.
Survivors include three sons, Fred R. Motley of Danville, Nephew Branch Jr. of Riverside, Calif. and Timothy R. Branch of Atlanta, Ga; four daughters, Cathy S. Hall of Dry Fork, Diane Brooks of Eden, N.C., Vicky Blackmon and Kimberly Reese, both of Danville; two sisters, Lois Motley of Norfolk and Lucille Davis of Danville; one brother, James Culley of Richmond; one half sister, Mary Brown of Baltimore, Md.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Beverly Bray
Beverly "Duck" Bray, 63, of 646 Cardinal Place Apt. 5, died Wednesday, July 24, 1996, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., after a decline in health of two months.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. Dr. Robert B. Setzer Jr. from the Swicegood Funeral Home chapel. Interment will be private.
Born in Danville on Oct. 23, 1932, he was the son of Daniel Webster Bray and Elizabeth Cox Bray.
He was a veteran of the Korean War. He spent most of his life in Danville where he was a self-employed plumber. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of American Legion Memorial Post No. 1097.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Duane Bray of Birmingham; one son, Terry Bray of Birmingham; six brothers, Julian Bray, Harry Bray and Thomas Bray, all of Danville, William Bray of Rockingham County, N.C., Carol Bray of Reidsville, N.C. and Robert Bray of Lexington, N.C.; two sisters, Ruby Cline of Fredericksburg and Mildred Dowell of Martinsville.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7-8:30 p.m.
John Hicks
John Richard Hicks, 71, of Route 3, South Boston died July 25, 1996 in his home.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 27 at 11 a.m. in Brooks Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Kenneth Williams. Interment will be in the First Crossroads Baptist Church cemetery in Turbeville.
Born Sept. 11, 1924 in Halifax County, he was a son of William P. and Carrie D. Hicks, both deceased.
He was a retired lineman with Virginia Power and a member of First Crossroads Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.
He was survived by his wife June H. Hicks; a daughter, Carol H. Hager of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, James R. "Ricky" Hicks of South Boston, and Phillip E. Hicks of Alton; a stepson, Jason R. Gordon, of South Boston; a sister, Rebecca H. Elliott, of Woodbridge; a brother, Bruce Hicks, of Danville; seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home Friday 7:30-9 p.m., and other times at the home.
Joseph Madden
Joseph David Madden, 43, of 2271 Pridgen Road, Myrtle Beach, S.C., died July 25, 1996 at Danville Regional Medical Center, after being in declining health for several years.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, July 27 at 2 p.m. from the Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. J. Richard Markham.
Born November 22, 1952 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of William Madden and Jackie Mobley Madden, both deceased.
A graduate of Dan River High School, he was employed in construction as an electrician. He spent most of his life in Danville and Myrtle Beach. He was of the Baptist faith and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Survivors include his former wife, Emma Gunnell; one son, Jason Madden of Danville; one daughter, Crystal Madden, of Danville; one sister, Willa Madden of Berkley, Calif.; his paternal grandmother, Wanda Mobley, of Danville.
Robert Pollok
MARTINSVILLE - Robert L. Pollok, 76, formerly of 905 Clarke Rd. in Martinsville, died July 25, 1996 at Martinsville Convalescent Center.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 27 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. John Carrier at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Roselawn Burial Park.
Born in Pittsylvania County on July 4, 1920, he was a son of Ferd L. Pollok and Blanche C. Pollok, both deceased.
He was a retired sales and accounting representative at R.J.R. Nabisco Co., where he worked for 35 years. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
He was survived by a son, Steven Robert Pollok, of Cary, N.C.; five sisters, Vergie Clark, Elsie Harper, Agnes Mitchell, Sally Pollok, all of Danville, and Ann Hemmings of Abington; three brothers, Collins W. Pollok of Danville, Harold Pollok and Harry Pollok, both of Dry Fork.

Heather Bolling
Heather Leigh Bolling, 11, of 3677 Old Richmond Road, died Friday morning, July 26, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for four days.
Born July 30, 1984, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Thomas Bolling and Jane Guill Bolling, who survive.
She spent her life in Danville and attended Blairs Middle School, where she played clarinet for the school band. She was a member of Northview Presbyterian Church.
Survivors in addition to her parents of the residence include a brother, Jonathan C. Evans of Lexington, N.C.; her maternal grandmother, Marcie S. Guill of Danville; and her paternal grandmother, Minnie L. Bolling of Ringgold.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Ken Atkins. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times will be at the home of her grandmother, Marcie S. Guill, 312 Norwood Dr.
Sharron Elaine (Kenney) George
Sharron Elaine George, formerly of 118 Windflower Dr., died Friday, July 26, 1996, at 603-A Springforest Road, Greenville, N.C. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born July 24, 1943, in Sophia, W.Va., she was a daughter of Joseph Kenny and Mary Wydo Kenny, who survives.
For 16 years, she had lived in the Danville area, where she worked for Ennis Business Forms as a credit clerk.
She was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church, and was married
to Daniel S. George, who died July 9, 1994.
Survivors, in addition to her mother of Danville, include two daughters, Denise G. Rimmer and Lisa G. Holley both of Greenville, N.C.; a brother, Berry Wallace Kenny of Falls Church and two grandchildren.
A sister, Mary Elizabeth Simpson, predeceased her.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday at Hopewell United Methodist Church by the Rev. W. Clay Knick. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family wll receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the church.

Virginia Chaney
HAMPTON - Virginia Hall Chaney, 75, died Sunday, July 28, 1996, in Riverside Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.
She was a native of Chatham, but lived in Hampton for the past 43 years. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, where she attended the Friendship Sunday School Class. She also taught Sunday school for many years, and organized the church's Helping Hands Committee. She was also a member of the Northampton Civic League.
She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Edward Chaney.
Survivors include four sons, Raymond Michael Chaney of Newport News, Raymond Edward Chaney Jr. of Hampton, John Edward Chaney of Danville and Richard Carroll Chaney of Gloucester; two sisters, Gloria Smith and Barbara Wimmer, both of Roanoke; a brother, Donald P. Hall of Baltimore; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Liberty Baptist Church by the Rev. Al Gilbert and the Rev. Ian King. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton.
Claudia Clark
Claudia Lee Clark, 98, formerly of 221 Montague St., died Sunday, July 28, 1996, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 2, 1897, in Granville County, N.C., she was a daughter of Floyd Clark and Alice Daniel Clark.
She spent most of her life in Granville County, N.C., and was a member of Amis Chapel Baptist Church.
She had been a resident of Danville since 1985, and moved to the nursing home in 1987.
Survivors include a sister, Emily C. Terry of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday from Amis Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Malvin Tuck. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
