Tommy "Dan" Daniel Arnn III
Tommy "Dan" Daniel Arnn III, 23, of 220 Walnut Road, died Sunday, July 21, 1996, after an accident.
Born October 25, 1972, he was the son of Tommy Daniel Arnn Jr. and Vickie Scearce Arnn.
A lifelong resident of Danville, he was a George Washington High School graduate and was
employed at Owens-Corning Fiber Glass Co. in Martinsville.
He was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include his parents; a sister, Jennifer Arnn of Danville; two brothers, Mark Arnn and Luke Arnn, both of Danville; two grandmothers, Gaynelle Arnn and Waverly Searce, both of Danville; and a grandfather, Tommy Arnn Sr. of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel by the Rev. Barry Crumpton and the Rev. Joe Beck. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Wednesday night at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, and at others times will be at the residence.
Joseph S. "Pop" Carter Jr.
MARTINSVILLE - Joseph S. "Pop" Carter Jr., 67, of Route 1, Martinsville, died Sunday, July 21, 1996, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville in Henry County.
Born July 28, 1929, in Kings Mountain, N.C., he was the son of Joseph S. Carter Sr. and Zula Kimball Carter.
He was a senior partner of Carter Construction Company.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Hodges Carter of the residence; two sons, Mike Carter and Rick Carter both of Martinsville; three sisters, Mildred Robertson and Betty Pruitt both of Martinsville and Margaret Ingram of Salem; two brothers, William "Trimmy" Carter of Roanoke and Bobby N. Carter of Martinsville; five grandchildren and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Emma Hall.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at McKee Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Leonard Castleman and the Rev. Craig Hagen. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at McKee Funeral Home, and other times will be at the son's home on North Fork Road.
Evelyn James Jordan
LYNCHBURG - Evelyn James Jordan, 89, of Westminster Canterbury, died Monday afternoon, July 22, 1996, at her residence.
Born May 26, 1907, in Danville, she was the daughter of Julian C. Jordan and Emma Evelyn James Jordan.
She was educated at Randolph Macon Institute and Hollins College.
She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and active in The Wednesday Club, the Garden Club of Danville, and the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.
Survivors include her brother, Matthew P. Jordan of Danville.
The graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Green Hill cemetery by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
The family will receive friends 7:30-9 Wednesday night at Townes Funeral Home.
Cullen Paul Brooks
CHATHAM - Cullen Paul Brooks, 94, of Route 41, formerly of Military Drive, died Tuesday morning, July 23, 1996, at the residence.
Born Feb. 28, 1902, in Stanly County, N.C., he was the son of the Rev. Edgar M. Brooks and Emma Morton Brooks.
He was married
to Myrtie Bidgood Brooks in 1929.
He graduated from Buies Creek Academy (now Campbell University) and Wake Forest University. He earned his master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught at Hargrave Military Academy until he retired in 1972.
He was a member of Chatham Baptist Church, Chatham Lion's Club, and was a past member of Chatham Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Chatham Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael W. Macon. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and at other times, will be at the residence.
Mabel Hardy Hobbs
WHEATON, MD. - Mabel Hardy Hobbs, 91, a longtime resident of Altavista, died Tuesday morning, July 23, 1996, at Randolph Hill Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 2, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jesse Robert Hardy and Annie Owen Hardy.
She was married
to Virgil Lee Hobbs who died Sept. 30, 1988.
She was an active member of Central Baptist Church in Altavista.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy H. Sowell of Charlotte, N.C., and Corda H. Wepasnick of Kensington, Md.; two sisters, Mary H. Parrott of Danville and Maggie H. Morton of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, Harold E. Hardy of Newport News, Va.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Fletcher Hardy III.
The family will receive friends after the service at the home of her sister, Mary Parrott, 460 Northmont Blvd.

Luke Marable Sr.
SOUTH BOSTON - Luke Marable Sr., 74, died Saturday, July 20, 1996, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born July 3, 1922, in Halifax County, he was a member of New Arbor Baptist Church.
He was married
to Edith Marable of South Boston.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Edith Tennant of Hartford, Conn., Althea Williams of South Boston, and Mary Washington of Sutherlin; two sons, Luke Marable Jr. of South Boston and Jerry Marable of Ringgold; two sisters, Anna Robinson of Jersey City, N.J. and Malissa Lewis of Albany, N.Y.; two brothers, Joel Marable of South Boston and the Rev. Dewey Kirby of Detroit, Mich.; and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at New Arbor Baptist Church in South Boston by the Rev. Dr. Dewey Kirby. Burial will be in the Marable Family cemetery.
His body may be viewed one hour prior to the service.

Mary Sue Stroud Walker
Mary Sue Stroud Walker, 91, of 818 Holland Road, died Tuesday morning, July 23, 1996, at her residence after a three-year decline in health.
Born June 2, 1905, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of William Thomas Walker and Annie Ferguson Walker.
She lived on Holland Road for the past 60 years and was employed in the No. 5 Sewing Room at Dan River Mills for 14 years. She retired in 1947 due to bad health.
She was a member of Holland Road Baptist Church.
She was married
to Stanley Stroud who died May 7, 1967.
She was later married
to Samuel Preston Walker who died in February 1990.
Survivors include one daughter, Hellon Stroud Barrett of the residence; one son, Homer Ralph Stroud of Fredericksburg; two sisters, Louise Scearce of Martinsville and Peggy Hawley of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Harold Chilton. Burial will follow in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and at other times, at the residence.
Thelma M. Branch
Thelma Motley Branch, 60, of 78 Dudley St., died Sunday, July 21, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 5, 1936, she was the daughter of Roland Avery and Ollie Culley.
She was married
to Nephew Branch Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a member of the Holy Tabernacle Church.
Survivors include three sons, Fred R. Motley of Danville, Nephew Branch Jr. of Riverside, Calif. and Timothy R. Branch of Atlanta, Ga; four daughters, Cathy S. Hall of Dry Fork, Diane Brooks of Eden, N.C., Vicky Blackmon and Kimberly Reese, both of Danville; two sisters, Lois Motley of Norfolk and Lucille Davis of Danville; one brother, James Culley of Richmond; one half sister, Mary Brown of Baltimore, Md.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by Bishop Peggy Motley. Interment will be in the Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Beverly Bray
Beverly "Duck" Bray, 63, of 646 Cardinal Place Apt. 5, died Wednesday, July 24, 1996, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., after a decline in health of two months.
Born in Danville on Oct. 23, 1932, he was the son of Daniel Webster Bray and Elizabeth Cox Bray.
He was a veteran of the Korean War. He spent most of his life in Danville where he was a self-employed plumber. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of American Legion Memorial Post No. 1097.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Duane Bray of Birmingham; one son, Terry Bray of Birmingham; six brothers, Julian Bray, Harry Bray and Thomas Bray, all of Danville, William Bray of Rockingham County, N.C., Carol Bray of Reidsville, N.C. and Robert Bray of Lexington, N.C.; two sisters, Ruby Cline of Fredericksburg and Mildred Dowell of Martinsville.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. Dr. Robert B. Setzer Jr. from the Swicegood Funeral Home chapel. Interment will be private.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7-8:30 p.m.
Joseph H. Harper Jr.
Joseph Henry Harper Jr., 78, of 119 Baugh St., died Sunday, July 21, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 16, 1919, in Alamance County, N.C., he was the son of Joseph H. Harper Sr. and Maggie Harper.
He was a self-employed truck driver.
Survivors include one son, Stewart Harper of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Tanya Harper and Sonya Harper, both of Wilmington N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from the Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. J.P. Griffith Jr.
Viewing will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
