Addison Rigney
CALLANDS - Addison "Add" Rigney, 77, of Route 1, died Sunday, July 14, 1996, in Southside Community Hospital, Farmville.
Born May 7, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Isaac Rigney and Josephine Rigney Rigney.
He was a member of Christian Tabernacle Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel Amos Rigney of Axton; one son, Addison Wayne Rigney of Callands; two daughters, Mildred R. Hodge of Danville and Debbie Ann R. Hill of Callands; two brothers, Percy Rigney of Chatham and Willie Rigney of Callands; six grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Leslie R. Walker, Mary R. Walker and Bessie R. Gibson.
The graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Rigney Family cemetery by the Rev. J.D. Hunt III.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and other times will be at the home of his daughter, Debbie Hill, State Road 817, Callands.
Mary Flanigan
Mary Gery Flanigan, 80, 5512 Franklin Turnpike, died Monday, July 15, 1996, in her residence. She had been in declining health since June 7, 1996.
Born Feb. 24, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Linwood O. Reynolds Sr. and Ella Jackson Reynolds.
She was married
to James F. Gery Sr., who died April 3, 1971.
She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she taught Sunday school, and was secretary and treasurer of the Ladies' Auxillary for many years.
Survivors include two sons, James Frank Gery Jr. and Jack R. Gery, both of Danville; two daughters, Alice G. Brown of Danville, and Hilda G. Welch of Leasburg, N.C.; four brothers, Linwood O. Reynolds Jr. and C. Douglas Reynolds, both of Danville, Thurman Reynolds of Eden, N.C., and Jerome F. Reynolds of Richmond; four sisters, Lemma R. Davis and Hazel R. Gregory, both of Danville, Becky R. Adkerson and Ruby R. Hutson, both of Dry Fork; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Beverly T. Reynolds and F. Beacham Reynolds, and by two sisters, Francis Hutson and Bessie M. Crane.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Joe Beck and the Rev. Mike Hearp. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
John Ferrell
DRY FORK - John Henry Ferrell, 89, 1885 Hopewell Road, died Sunday, July 14, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 19, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Henry and Anna Skipwith Ferrell.
He was married
to Bessie Glass Ferrell, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, John P. Ferrell of Danville, Willie Clarence Ferrell of Blairs, Mack Ferrell and Jack Ferrell, both of Dry Fork; a daughter, Valean Barley of Danville; three brothers, Hugh Ferrell and Joe Ferrell, both of Danville, and Charlie Ferrell of Blairs; and two sisters, Josephine Robertson of Ringgold, and Mary Ferrell of Mount Vernon, N.Y.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. James Cabell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Timothy "Tim" Roberts
Timothy W. "Tim" Roberts, 46, 3061 R & L Smith Road, died Sunday, July 14, 1996, in Pittsylvania County.
Born Aug. 6, 1949, in Halifax, he was a son of Bessie Vaughn Roberts, who survives, and James Milton Roberts.
He was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for 20 years. He was also of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother of South Boston, survivors include his fiancee, Teresa J. Robertson, a daughter, Mary Jane Roberts; two sisters, Marie R. Andrews of Charlotte Court House, and Francis R. Overby of Richmond; and a brother, James Marvin Roberts of South Boston.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Steve Johnson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Timothy "Turkey" Roberts
The funeral for Timothy Walter "Turkey" Roberts, 46, P.O. Box 4491, was conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Steve Johnson. Interment was in Highland Burial Park.
He died Sunday, July 14, 1996, in Pittsylvania County.
Born Aug. 6, 1949, in Halifax, he was a son of Bessie Vaughn Roberts, who survives, and James Milton Roberts.
He was formerly married
to J. Dolores Hawker, who survives.
He graduated from Halifax County High School in 1969 and also attended Danville Community College.
He was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for 24 years. He was also of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother of South Boston, survivors include a daughter, Mary Jane Roberts; two sisters, Marie R. Andrews of Charlotte Court House, and Francis R. Overby of Richmond; and a brother, James Marvin "Fireball" Roberts of South Boston.
He was predeceased by a brother, Allen Roberts.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Essie Snead
Essie Mae Gauldin Snead, 78, 120 Franklin Court, died Monday, July 15, 1996, in her residence, following several months of declining health.
Born March 13, 1918, she was a daughter of William O. Gauldin and Lula Mae Oakes Gauldin.
She was married
to Johnny W. Snead, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she retired from Dan River Inc. after 42 years of service.
She was a charter member of Christian Heritage Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Auxillary, the adult Sunday school class, and the Faith Christian Missions.
During World War II, she served in the Air Force.
In addition to her husband of Danville, survivors include two sons, Johnny W. Snead Jr. of Danville, and James Allen Snead of Altavista; a daughter, Lois L. Clark of Los Angeles; a brother, Forrest Gauldin of Callands; three sisters, Lottie Walker of Penhook, Etheleen Maisel of Callands, and Geraldeen Rigney of Hurt; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Christian Heritage Church by Dr. James Gardner. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Hattie Stegall
Hattie Holley Stegall, 96, 765 Vance Hill Road, died Monday, July 15, 1996, in her residence, following three years of declining health.
Born Dec. 22, 1899, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Holley and Jenny Holley Holley.
She was married
to Clarence G. Stegall, who died March 20, 1983.
She spent her entire life in the Whitemell and Vance communities of Pittsylvania County, where she was a homemaker. She was also a member of Old Mill Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Janie S. Wyatt of Danville, Virginia S. Turner of Axton, and Irene S. Oakes of Museville; three sons, Charlie E. Stegall of Dry Fork, and William "Bill" Stegall and Richard L. Stegall, both of Danville; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, by Elder Wallace Smith and Elder C.B. Davis. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, 765 Vance Hill Road, on State Route 852.
William Hines
William Crawley Hines, 78, 182 Cooper St., died Tuesday, July 16, 1996, in his residence.
Born June 26, 1918, in Dendrow, he was a son of William Mansfield Hines and Josie Crawley Hines.
On Feb. 4, 1956, he was married
to Rebecca Porter Hines, who survives.
He was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church for more than 40 years. He spent his entire life in Danville and retired from Nationwide Insurance Company, where he was an insurance agent. He also retired from Dan River Mills, Inc., where he was a security guard.
He was also a member of the American Legion Post #325 where he was recently recognized as one of only two members in good standing for 50 consecutive years. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WWII.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Bill Hines of the residence; a sister, Elaine H. Worley of Norfolk; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday by the Rev. Jack Waddell. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, where military honors will be given by the American Legion Post #325.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, and at other times at the residence.
Bishop Gladys Jones
Bishop Gladys L. Jones, 74, 732 E. Thomas St., died Friday, July 12, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 10, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Mack Gunter and Gracie Conway Gunter.
She was married
to Charlie H. Jones, who survives.
She was employed by Lorillard Tobacco Co. She was also a pastor of the Movement of Jesus Christ Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Edward L. Jones of Danville and Henry W. Jones of Oxon Hill, Md.; six sisters, Bernice Tucker and Nadgery Davis, both of Dallas, Francis Glover of Fayetteville, N.C., Jannie King of Washington, D.C., Helene Glenn of Keeling, and Christine Johnson of Baltimore; three brothers, Fred Gunter of Washington, D.C., Ray Gunter of Hampton, and James Gunter of Fayetteville, N.C.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from the Christ Temple Apostolic Church by Elder D.L. Jackson II. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The body may be viewed 4-8 tonight at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Orlando Jones
CHATHAM - Orlando Jones, 91, Route 5, Chatham, died Sunday, July 14, 1996, in Martinsville Convalescent Center.
Born Sept. 15, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Stonewall and Ella Smith Jones.
He was married
to Elizabeth Jones, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Chatham Hall.
In addition to his wife of California, survivors include a daughter, Della Jones of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Lonnie Whitehead and Annie Laurie Younger, both of Chatham; and two brothers, the Rev. Russell Jones and Jessie Jones, both of Chatham.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Smithfield Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Buford Craighead. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Russell Smith
PITTSVILLE - Russell Smith, 95, Route 1, Pittsville, died Sunday, July 14, 1996, in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born March 24, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Smith and Susie Smith.
He was married
to Elsie Hubbard Smith, who predeceased him.
He was of the Baptist faith and attended Macedonia Baptist Church in Chatham.
Survivors include two nieces, Rebecca Younger and Jean Berger, both of Pittsville, and a nephew, Clinton Smith of Gretna; and a number of other nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Charlie Smith, Woodrow Smith, and Chester Smith; and by two sisters, Doris Mayfield and Lizzie Hubbard.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Miller Funeral Home Chapel, in Gretna, by the Rev. Raymond Ramsey. Burial will be in Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery.
