Marie Fox
SOUTH BOSTON - Marie Smith Fox, 74, 1101 Eastwood Court, died Monday, July 8, 1996, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 16, 1922, in Danville, she was a daughter of John Tune Smith and Pearl Ragsdale Smith.
She was married
to Richard M. "Dick" Fox III, who survives.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her husband of South Boston, survivors include two daughters, Patricia Jean Fox of Cheltonham, Md., and Anne Fox Morey of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a son, David Ransom Fox of Richmond; four sisters, Mae Yates, Anne Kent, and Lottie Hicks, all of Danville, and Violet Williams of Pompano, Fla.; and a brother, Charles Smith of Virginia Beach.
The memorial service will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday from Powell Funeral Home Chapel, in South Boston, by the Rev. Russell Lee. The family will receive friends 8-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Leslie Reynolds
Leslie Duaine Reynolds, 54, Route 2, Box 1370, died Tuesday, July 9, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 17, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Ruby Wright Reynolds, who survives, and John Leslie Reynolds.
He spent his entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County, where he was employed by Charles Body Shop as an auto body technician.
He served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of VFW Ballard Pruitt Post Pruitt No. 647.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include a son, Leslie Duaine Reynolds Jr. of the residence; a daughter, Belinda Kaye Reynolds of Burlington, N.C.; and a brother, Ronnie E. Reynolds of Danville.
He was predeceased by his sister, Sylvia R. Lovell.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Thursday from Danville Memorial Gardens, where military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the home of his brother, 2284 Inman Road.
Russell Sandy
Russell Harding Sandy, 75, formerly of 201 Fagan St., died Monday, July 8, 1996, in Camelot Hall of Salem.
Born Oct. 1, 1920, in Wake County, N.C., he was a son of Nellie F. and Claude Sandy.
On June 16, 1945, he was married
to Virginia Leonard Sandy, who died Feb. 26, 1995.
He was employed by Sealtest Dairy for many years, before becoming owner of Sandy's Refrigeration Inc.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Manley. He was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for heroism in action in the Pacific theater. He was a member of American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
He was also a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church.
He is survived by a sister, Lessie S. Holloman of Cary, N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. today from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks and the Rev. Robert Miller. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence of James and Idella Lynch, 203 Kinser Ave.

Bertha Shropshire
Bertha Smith Shropshire, 90, formerly of 50 Hylton Ave., died Tuesday, July 9, 1996, in Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton.
Born Oct. 10, 1905, in Glace, W.Va., she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Smith.
She was married
to Frank Shropshire, who died in 1959.
She had lived in Danville since 1923, until entering Oak Springs Nursing Home in Warrenton in March 1988.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Inc. as a spinner. She was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, John Shropshire of Manassas, and Harold Shropshire of Oklahoma City; and two step-daughters, Blanche Hopper of Hopewell, and Thelma Sharpe of Eden, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Schoolfield Baptist Church by the Rev. David Turbyfill and Dr. John H. LaRue. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
William "Bill" Willard
FERRUM - William "Bill" Ray Willard, 62, Route 2, Box 158AAA, died Monday, July 8, 1996, in his residence.
Born Oct. 12, 1933, in Henry County, he was a son of Edna Stovall Willard, who survives, and Ross Willard.
He was married
to Rosie Willard, who survives.
He was employed by Regent Industries for more than 12 years. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of Thomasson Heights Baptist Church, where he served as an usher.
In addition to his wife of the residence, and his mother of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Denise W. Morris of Danville; a sister, Lois Willard of Patrick Springs; a brother, Russell Willard of Bassett; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Thomasson Heights Baptist Church by the Rev. Doby Salmons. Burial will be in Union Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Collins Funeral Chapel, in Bassett, and other times at the residence.
Helen Bass
RINGGOLD - Helen Gibson Bass, 71, 772 Fall Creek Road, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following two weeks of declining health.
Born Aug. 29, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Coley Edward Gibson and Lena McDowell Gibson.
On Dec. 7, 1946, she was married
to J. Willard Bass, who died July 19, 1987.
She spent her entire life in the Ringgold community of Pittsylvania County. She was formerly employed by Dan River Mills Inc. and by the former Wimpy's Hamburger Drive Inn. She was also a homemaker and worked on the family farm.
She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Home Builders Sunday school class, and a former choir member and Sunday school teacher.
She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Group.
Survivors include five sons, Barry S. Bass of Sutherlin, Terry W. Bass, Larry D. Bass, Teddy A. Bass, and Christopher A. Bass, all of Ringgold; four brothers, William Gibson of Danville, Edward Gibson of Ringgold, Otis Gibson of Fayetteville, N.C., and Bernard Gibson of Danville; a sister, Nellie G. Farson of Danville; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Howard C. Green and the Rev. Roy Newton.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 772 Fall Creek Road, Ringgold, on Route 732 off Route 729.

Newman Bowman
KEELING - Newman Irish Bowman, 78, 1309 Keeling Drive, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996, in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born May 6, 1918, in Jacksboro, Tenn., he was a son of Richard D. Bowman and Nell Stone Bowman.
On Oct. 15, 1939, he was married
to Ernestine Cooper Bowman, who died March 19, 1991.
He lived in Jacksboro, Knoxville, Tenn., and Jenkins, Ky., until he moved to Keeling in 1980.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by BethEnergy Co. in Jenkins, as a lamp house attendant for 39 years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Jenkins from 1946 to 1980. He then joined Oak Grove Baptist Church in Keeling in 1980, where he served as deacon, a trustee, the superintendent of Sunday school and as a choir member.
He was also a member of Dan River Ruritan Club and of the Pine Mountain Masonic Lodge in Jenkins, Ky.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include a son, John C. Bowman of Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Charlotte B. Thompson of Keeling; a sister, Theresa B. Shelby of LaFollette, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Tom Erwin.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, where a memorial service will be conducted 8:00 tonight after visitation. The family will also receive friends at the residence of Charlotte Thompson, 1309 Keeling Drive, on State Route 716.
Willmon Poole Jr.
Willmon Poole Jr., 49, 123 Scott St., died Monday, July 8, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 26, 1947, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Willmon Poole Sr. and Marie Davis Poole, who survives.
He was married
to Geraldine D. Poole, who also survives.
He was employed by Northern Construction Co.
In addition to his mother of the residence, and his wife of Danville, survivors include two sons, Dennis Poole of Danville, and Levi Poole of Lynchburg; three daughters, Janice Poole and Terria Poole, both of Danville, and Kolada Poole of Washington, D.C.; four brothers, Alvesta Poole, T.C. Poole, Herbert Poole, and Reginald Poole, all of Danville; seven sisters, Peggy Anderson of Ringgold, Geneva Poole, Rebecca Carter, Sandra Corbett, Yvonne Shelton, Yvette Hairston, and Maxine Loftis, all of Danville; his grandfather, Alexis Lewis of Danville; and his grandmother, Geneva White of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel by Bishop Fred B. Kidd. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The body may be viewed 4-8 tonight at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Harry Younger
GRETNA - Harry T. Younger, 89, of Route 2, Gretna, died Monday, July 8, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 5, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Langhorn Younger and Lelia Crews Younger.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Marie Mease of Gretna; three sons, Billy Younger of Gretna, Gene Younger of Philadelphia, and Edwin Younger of New Jersey; six brothers, Rev. Earl Younger, Herbert Younger, Lindbergh Younger, all of Gretna, Walter Younger of Washington, D.C., Bobby Younger of Columbia, S.C., and Frank Younger of Philadelphia; three sisters, Vernell Byrd, Gladys Burwell and Virginia Keatts, all of Gretna; and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Younger; a sister, Thelma Dearing; and five brothers, James Younger, Burton Younger, Parrish Younger, Charlie Younger, and Edison Younger.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Hubert White. Burial will be in Fairview Baptist Church cemetery.

James Powell
James Edward Powell, 85, 234 Virginia Ave., died Thursday, July 11, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 5, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Daniel Powell and Martha E. Carter Powell.
He was married
to Margaret Denny Powell, who survives.
In 1932, he graduated from Virginia Military Institute. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a major.
He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Danville Kiwanis Club.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a real estate salesman in Danville.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Margaret Anne Powell and Laura Morgan Powell, both of Danville; and a brother, Alpha Powell of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Richard Cobb and the Rev. Rebecca Yow.

James "Jimmy" Shelton
James "Jimmy" Withers Shelton, 44, 104 Forestroad Drive, died Thursday, July 11, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 25, 1952, in Danville, he was a son of Annie Young Shelton, who survives, and Herman W. Shelton Sr.
He was married
to Debra Austin Shelton, who survives.
He was a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Council and as a former lay leader, a Sunday school teacher and a trustee.
He was also a member of the Danville Amateur Radio Association.
He was employed by Bacon Enterprises as director of operations for 18 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, and his mother of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Danielle Withers Shelton and Jennifer Ann Shelton, both of the residence; and two brothers, Herman W. Shelton Jr. of Merritt Island, Fla., and Charles Anthony Shelton of Pittsburg, Calif.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday from Stokesland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dorothy Thomas. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
