Jimmy Kelly
BLAIRS - James "Jimmy" Kelly, 70, of 430 East Witt Road, died Friday morning, June 21, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 23, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Kelly and Ella Miller Kelly.
He was a member of the White Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Johnnie Pearl Jelly, and one sister, Frances Kelly.
Survivors include five sisters, Lelia Younger and Alberta Hairston, both of Blairs, Mary Lizzie Bennett of Dry Fork, Almeda Griffin of Danville and Dorothy Ann Brown of China, Calif.; and two brothers, Herman Kelly of Chatham and Leroy Kelly of Blairs.
A funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. E.L. Pope with burial in the Mount Airy Baptist Church cemetery.
The remains may be viewed from 4 to 8 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home in Gretna.
Janie Rowland
GRETNA - Janie Manley Rowland, 76, of 402 Henry St., died Friday, June 21, 1996, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Feb. 17, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Washington Manley and Lillie Jason Owens Manley.
She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Reuben W. Rowland of residence; one son, Willis Myers of Eden, N.C.; one daughter, Alma Rankins of Fort Meade, Fla., two brothers, George W. Manley Jr. of Danville and Robert W. Manley of Lynch Station; four sisters, Gracie Franklin of Danville, Stella Marie Wright of Gretna, Lois Lee Manley of Danville and Jessie Mae Shifley of Gainesville, Ga.; and nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service wil be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at the Rowland family cemetery by the Rev. R.G. Rowland.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 402 Henry St.

Gladys Swain
BLAIRS - Gladys Gosney Swain, 78, of 439 Deerwood Drive, died Saturday, June 22, 1996, in Riverside Health Care Center. She had been in declining health for 10 years and in the nursing home for 10 days.
Born Oct. 8, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Henry Gosney and Mary Ellen McDaniel.
She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. She had lived all of her life in Danville where she had worked for Dan River Mills Inc.'s riverside division as a smash hand in the weave room.
She married
Obert Franklin Swain on Nov. 17, 1934. He preceded her in death in September 1988.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy S. Mayes of Danville and Barbara S. Turner of Blairs; two sisters, Elsie S. Martin of Danville and Nancy S. Prilliman of Hartford, Ala.; and four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. William C. Blalock. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 4-5 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family, at other times, will be at the residence of Barbara S. Turner, 439 Deerwood Drive, Blairs.
Bessie Guill Hargrove
Bessie C. Guill Hargrove, 80, of 351 Terry Ave., died Sunday, June 23, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for two years.
Born Aug. 27, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Chattin and Martha Wells Chattin.
She spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, where she worked for Dan River Inc., in the No. 2 Spin Department, for 25 years.
She was first married
to Harry T. Guill, who died on April 19, 1979. She later married
William Hargrove.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors in addition to her husband of the residence include three sons, Bennie F. Guill Sr., Thomas L. Guill and Roy S. Guill all of Danville; one brother, Joe Chattin of Los Angeles; one sister, Essie Toler of Blairs; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Tuesday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Daniel Lackey.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Bennie F. Guill Sr., 141 Nelson Ave.
Lewis Mahan
Lewis John Mahan, 77, of 1100 Main St., Apt. 4, died Saturday night, June 22, 1996, in Martinsville-Henry County Memorial Hospital. He suffered a stroke two weeks ago.
Born May 10, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Mahan and Robbin Marks Mahan. He spent most of his life in the Danville area and was retired from Dan River Inc.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the American Legion.
He was of the Baptist faith and was the last member of his generation of the family.
Survivors include his wife, Nonnie Lee Hodges Mahan, of the residence; and two stepsons, Terry Burnette and Kenny Burnette both of Sparta, N.C.
The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Mahan Family cemetery, near Chatham, by the Rev. Rudy Hearn.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Annie Maxey
Annie Blankenship Maxey, 75, of 120 Old Piney Forest Road, died Saturday night, June 22, 1996, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Feb. 23, 1921, in Salem, she was the daughter of James Harvey Blankenship and Leafye Ann Yopp.
She was a homemaker who spent most of her life in Danville.
She was married
to Howard William Maxey, who died March 25, 1970.
Survivors include four daughters, Maybelle M. Worley of Reidsville, N.C.; Sadie M. Wilson of Ringgold; Betty M. Wilson of Danville and Judy Ann Maxey of Newport News; four sons, Raymond E. Maxey of Level Cross, N.C.; Howard Walter Maxey of Providence. N.C.; Ronald Lee Maxey of Ringgold; and Gary Glen Maxey of Danville; three sisters, Ada Pratt of Lynchburg, Ruth Underwood of Roanoke, and Lucy Duncan of Salem; three brothers, Ralph Blankenship and Moyer Blankenship both of Salem, and Frank Blankenship of Front Royal; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Lewis William Maxey.
The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Wayne Reece.

Harvey Price
Harvey Price, 84, of 149 Keens Mill Road, died Saturday, June 22, 1996, at his home.
Born April 28, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert Price and Mary Evans Price.
He was a self-employed barber and was a deacon at White Rock Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Fannie Robinson of Danville and Geneva Turner of Philadelphia.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at White Rock Baptist Church by the Rev. Walter Tinsley. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The body may be viewed 4-8 p.m. Monday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will be at the residence.
Nannie Bradley
Nannie Poteat Bradley, 84, formerly of 812 Holland Road, died Monday, June 24, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center following several years of declining health.
Born July 25, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William M. Poteat and Sallie Cook Poteat.
She was married
to James Curtis Bradley, who died Aug. 9, 1956.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Mills in the 4B Weave Room until her retirement in 1973. She lived on Holland Road for 50 years, and was a member of Holland Road Baptist Church. She had been a patient of Piney Forest Nursing Home since December.
Survivors include two nephews, Johnnie A. Poteat Jr. and William T. Poteat, both of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; and a niece, Barbara Blair of Danville.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister-in-law, Lottie Poteat, 812 Holland Road.

Rabbi Larry Kaplan
PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. - Rabbi Larry Kaplan, 66, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, June 23, 1996, in Fawcett Memorial Hospital.
He was born Nov. 9, 1929, in Paterson, N.J.
He was married
to Phyllis R. Kaplan, who survives.
He moved to Florida in 1992 after living in Montreal.
He was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and received his Rabbinical Ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1965.
He was the rabbi of Temple Shalom of Port Charlotte. In 1990, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree for 25 years of service to various congregations.
He was a member of many organizations, including the National Association for Reform Jewish Educators, and the CCAR, a professional organization for Reform Rabbis. He was also a member of the Rotary in several communities, and served as treasurer of the Ministerial Association for several years. He also served on the Ethics Committee for Columbia Fawcett Hospital.
He also taught a Judaism class at Florida Southern University.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Wendi Elyse Kaplan of Alexandria, Va.; a son, Seth Kaplan of Richmond, Va.; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Temple Shalom, 23190 Utica Ave., Port Charlotte, by Rabbi Jerry Steinberg. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Laus Lester
Laus Deo Lester, 78, 431 West Thomas St., died Friday, June 21, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Born Feb. 7, 1918, in Halifax County, he was a son of Arthur and Lillian Powell Lester.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a metal fabricator.
He was a graduate of John M. Langston High School and later attended North Carolina A&T State University. He also served in the United States Army during World War II.
Survivors include two sisters, Viola Curvington of Landover, Md., and Mentre James of Largo, Md.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from First Baptist Church, Washington Street, by the Rev. J.P. Griffith.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Gertrude Lovelace
The funeral for Gertrude Lovelace, 65, 157 Northern Drive, will be conducted 1 p.m. today from Guildfield Baptist Church, with interment in Highland Burial Park.
She died Saturday, June 22, 1996, in the Medical Care Center of Lynchburg.
Born April 26, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Allie Keesee and Nannie Morton Keesee, who survives.
She was married
to Edward Lovelace, who survives.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Southern Processors.
In addition to her husband of the residence, and her mother of Lynchburg, survivors include a daughter, Tracey Lovelace of Danville; a son, Carl Jones of Lynchburg; three sisters, Marylou Jefferson of Dry Fork, and Shirley Evans and Gwendolyn Campbell, both of Lynchburg; four brothers, Allie Keesee Jr. and Willie Keesee, both of New Jersey, James Keesee of Dry Fork and Roosevelt Keesee of Chatham.
The family will receive at the residence.
