Ruben Scarce

Ruben Garland Scarce, 70, 213 Brightwell Drive, died Wednesday, June 19, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following a year of declining health.
Born Sept. 6, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Earley Garland Scarce and Myrtle Walton Scarce, who survives.
On April 8, 1950, he was married to Mary Jo Alford Scarce, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas. Prior to his retirement, he was president and chairman of the board of Smith Seed Inc.
He was a graduate of Smithdeal-Massey Business College and also attended the University of Virginia. He was also a graduate of Whitmell Farm Life High School.
He was past president of the Civitan Club and of the Tuscarora County Club. He was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
During World War II, he served in the United States Air Force.
In addition to his mother of Whitmell, and his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Stephen E. Scarce of Richmond; a brother, James Ray Scarce of Tennessee; a sister, Earlene S. Bliss of Danville; and two granddaughters.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by Bill Davis. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, where military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Agnes Camp

Agnes Mae Davis Camp, 88, formerly of 9 Schoolfield Drive, died Thursday, June 20, 1996, in Roman Eagle Nursing Home, following six years of declining health.
Born Dec. 16, 1907, in Fries, she was a daughter of Thomas Harley Davis and Ella Carver Davis.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Mills until her retirement. She was a member of Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara C. Heffinger of Danville; five sons, James V. Camp of Chapel Hill, N.C., Harold D. Camp of South Boston, Thomas H. Camp of Georgetown, Texas, Max T. Camp of Huntsville, Ala., and Richard E. Camp of Cary, N.C.; two brothers, Alfred Davis and Woodrow Davis, both of Columbia, S.C.; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Franklin Camp, who died Oct. 18, 1990, and by a sister, Daisy C. Williams.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, by the Rev. Myron Bruce, the Rev. Jack Robertson and the Rev. John Meadows. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Marie Harrington

Marie Adams Harrington, 74, 325 Ross St., died Wednesday, June 19, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 25, 1922, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Salem and Anna Lester Adams.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Harrington.
Survivors include a daughter, LaRita Harrington of the residence; three sons, Frederick Harrington of Washington, D.C., Gary Harrington of Tallahassee, Fla., and Tyrone Harrington of Baltimore; and three sisters, Lucy Shorts, Ada Hairston and Mattie Swann, all of Philadelphia.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Minnie Hudson

VIRGILINA - Minnie Bowen Hudson, 92, Route 3, died Thursday, June 20, 1996.
Born Dec. 4, 1903, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of George Bowen and Ada Arrington Bowen.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Franklin Hudson.
She was a homemaker and a member of North Fork Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Audrey H. Grinstead of Danville; a son, Worth M. Hudson of Virgilina; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from North Fork Baptist Church, in Virgilina, by the Rev. Russell Pedigo. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence, where the body will rest after 10 a.m. today.
Brooks Funeral Home of South Boston is in charge of arrangements.

Forrest Pritchett

The funeral for Forrest Chenault Pritchett, 80, formerly of 1487 Blair Loop Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Duane O. Blevins. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
She died Wednesday, June 19, 1996, in Riverside Health Care Center. She had been in declining health for six years.
Born Dec. 26, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Otis W. Chenault and Rosetta Fain Chenault.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Henry Pritchett.
She spent her entire life in the Danville area, where she was employed by Dan River Mills in the spinning room for many years. She later worked for Star Cleaners.
She was a member of Riverview Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sisters, Beatrice Gill and Frances Walton, both of Danville, Myrtle Gallop of Bessemer City, N.C., and Mildred Liner of Norcross, Ga.; and a brother, Joseph Chenault of Louisville, Ky.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, Beatrice Gill, 717 Arlington Road.

Carolyn Thomas

TALLEYVILLE, DEL. - Carolyn E. Thomas, 70, 319 McDaniel Ave., McDaniel Crest, died Wednesday, June 19, 1996, in her residence, as a result of a brain disorder.
She was married to Owen J. Thomas Jr., who survives.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Brandywine School District as a cafeteria manager for 22 years. She was also a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include four daughters, Gail Crozier of Newark, Betty McVey of Landenberg, Pa., Peggy Hutter of Elkins, N.H., and Sandra Hultberg of Wilmington; a brother, Robert Bailey of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Janie Lumpkin of Danville, Va., and Ellen Crutchfield of Virginia Beach, Va.; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.
McCrery Funeral Home of Wilmington is in charge of arrangements.

Lessie "Crickett" Williams

Lessie F. "Crickett" Williams, 61, 167 Godfrey St., Lot #49, died Thursday, June 20, 1996, in her residence.
Born Aug. 21, 1934, in Horsepasture, she was a daughter of Jacob W. Ferris and Callie Colvard Ferris.
She was married to Bruce H. Williams, who survives.
She was employed as a seamstress.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a son, Lennie H. Doss of Kinston, N.C.; a daughter, Cynthia D. Williams of Danville; a brother, Franklin Ferris of Danville; a sister, Lena F. Walker of Yanceyville, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister and six brothers.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday from Victory Baptist Church by the Rev. Hylton Lawrence. The family will receive friends 2:30-3:00 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nonie "Muss" Anderson

BLAIRS - Nonie "Muss" Pearl Anderson, 81, of Blairs, died Monday, June 17, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 19, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Joe Whitehead and Sallie Watkins Whitehead.
She was married to Johnnie Albert Anderson, who died March 13, 1990.
Survivors include three sons, John Thomas Anderson of Blairs, and Albert Anderson and Linberg Anderson, both of Danville; nine daughters, Phyllis Womack of Baltimore, Shirley Parker of Fredericksburg, Violeen Thomas, Etruely Dixon, Florence Stone and Doris Witcher, all of Danville, and Emily Waller, Zelbra Bennett and Audrey Parker, all of Blairs; a sister, Lois Whitehead-Logan of Chatham; 43 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Shockoe Baptist Church, in Java, by the Rev. George H. Pass. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sadie Henderson

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Sadie Blackwell Henderson, 241 Mill Ave., Beckley, W.Va., died Wednesday, June 19, 1996, at the residence of her daughter in Providence.
Born May 1, 1904, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Alfred Williamson and Julia Blackwell.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Henderson.
She was a homemaker and a member of Saint John's Baptist Church in Beckley, W.Va. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Martha Chapter 32, in Pittsburgh.
Survivors include three daughters, Eunice H. Barber of Providence, Julia H. Slofer of Pittsburgh and Ruby H. Thompson of Detroit; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A service of remembrance will be held 4 p.m. Sunday from the chapel of Fulton Funeral Home, in Yanceyville, where the body may be viewed from noon until the time of service on Sunday.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Saint John's Baptist Church in Beckley, W.Va., with burial in Green Wood cemetery, Beckley, W.Va.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a daughter, Eunice H. Barber, 6910 N.C. 86, Providence.

Grace Burton

Grace Oakes Burton, 93, of 2625 North Main St., died Saturday, June 22, 1996, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for 10 years.
Born June 28, 1902, in Whitmell, she was the daughter of Sidney Buford Oakes and Sally Fallin Oakes.
She worked for the Pittsylvania County school system, teacheing at Mount Hermon School for many years. She was a member of the Virginia Poetry Society and published several books of poetry.
She was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church and taught the ladies' Bible class in Sunday school.
She was married to Edgar Willis Burton, who died July 7, 1956.
Survivors include a brother, George W. Oakes of Danville; and two sisters, Sally Oakes of Blairs and Elizabeth O. Aldrich of Asheville, N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Don Davidson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie Coleman

RINGGOLD - Charlie Ernest Coleman, 61, Route 1, Box 49, died Thursday, June 20, 1996, in his residence.
Born Sept. 18, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Rosa Coleman.
He was married to Natalie Coleman, who survives.
Prior to his declining health, he was employed by Dan River Inc.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Dianne Culley and Louethel Harris, both of Danville; a step-daughter, Rose Farmer of Danville; four sons, Ernest Coleman Jr. of Danville, Ricky Farmer and Kenneth Farmer, both of Danville; and Jerry Motley of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, William Logan of Pelham, N.C., and James Coleman of Danville; five sisters, Louise Miller, Mary Akins, and Linda Cobbs, all of Danville, Arsie McGhee of Boston, and Clara Logan of Virginia Beach.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Pleasant Chapel Baptist Church, in Sutherlin, with burial in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
