Evelyn Evans
RINGGOLD - Evelyn Gosney Evans, 80, Route 3, Box 950, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 1996, in her residence, following 15 years of declining health.
Born June 4, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Henry Gosney and Martha Barker Gosney.
On May 12, 1934, she was married
to Millard Blake Evans Jr., who survives.
She spent her entire life in the Pittsylvania and Halifax County areas. She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Pittsylvania County School system for 12 years in the cafeteria department at Dan River Middle School. She also assisted her husband with operation of the family farm for a number of years.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, Roy Evans of Danville, Bobby Evans of Ringgold and Larry Evans of Blairs; two daughters, Margaret Nealy of Blairs and Lana Shelton of Chatham; two brothers, Ed Gosney of Ringgold and Robert Gosney of Danville; a sister, Rachel Gosney of Ringgold; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Laurel Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Blair and the Rev. William Soyars. Burial will be in Laurel Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Laurel Grove Baptist Church, and other times at the residence.

Essie Hunter
Essie Gertrude Jones Hunter, 89, formerly of 715 Arnett Blvd., died Thursday, Sept. 5, 1996, in Roman Eagle Nursing Home, following several years of declining health.
Born March 31, 1907, in the Rondo community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walter Lee Jones and Mollie Crowder Jones.
She was married
to Hurley F. Hunter, who died July 19, 1972.
She spent most of her life in Danville. Prior to her retirement in 1961, she was employed by Dan River Mills in the 8A Dress Room for many years. She was also a life-long member of Mount Herman Baptist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Don Davidson. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her nephew, James Woody, 927 Rosemary Lane, in Sandy Shores.
Dennis Fielder
Dennis Carson Fielder, 240 Briarcliff Lane, died Friday, Sept. 6, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 3, 1941, in Elk Creek, he was a son of Helen Spivey Fielder, who survives, and Bayne G. Fielder.
On April 26, 1962, he was married
to Mary Harris, who survives.
He was educated in Galax Public Schools and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
He was employed as quality control manager by General Electric in Salem from 1964 to 1979, and by Clark Equipment Co. in Rockingham, N.C. from 1979 to 1984. In 1984, he became plant manager for Cardinal American Corporation in Las Vegas. After moving to Cleveland in 1986, he was employed as director of special operations by Cardinal American Corporation. He had been associated with Times Fiber Communications in Chatham for the past seven years, where he was plant manager and director of manufacturing.
He was also a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and the Lions Club in Chatham.
In addition to his mother of Galax and his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Dennice F. Morelli of High Point, N.C.; a son, Mark Edward Fielder of Brunswick, Ohio; two sisters, Jean Johnson of Mount Airy, N.C., and Margaret Sellers of Rock Hill, S.C.; his maternal grandmother, Ruby Spivey of Galax; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday from Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Rev. John LeGault. Burial will be 4 p.m. Monday at Jerusalem United Methodist Church near Galax.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Eva Harper
Eva Burton Harper, 84, 1709 Glenn St., died Thursday, Sept. 5, 1996, in her residence.
Born Dec. 24, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walter Towler and Martha Johnson Towler.
She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church for 36 years, where she was a member of Mrs. C.B. Powell's Sunday School Class.
Survivors include three sons, Noel Clifton Burton Jr., David C. Burton, and Forrest Dail Burton, all of Danville; three sisters, Katie Hill of Danville, Mabel Johnson of Dry Fork, and Minnie Kinsey of Laurinburg, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Noel Clifton Burton Sr., her second husband, Ulysses Grant Harper, and by a son, Douglas W. Burton.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Joe E. Beck. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of a son, David Burton, 414 Conifer Drive.

Waverly "Tom" Lowery
SOUTH BOSTON - Waverly Lee "Tom" Lowery, 70, 2158 Huell Matthews Hwy., died Friday, Sept. 6, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 31, 1926, in Halifax County, he was a son of Leonard Logan Lowery and Mary Bell Cole Lowery.
He was married
to Elsie Inge Lowery, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a merchant at Glasscock Hardware. During World War II, he served in the Army. He was also a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, he is survived by two sisters, Ida L. Lowery of Virgilina and Alice L. Clark of South Boston.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Brooks Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston by the Rev. Don Davidson. Burial will be in Dan River Baptist Church cemetery.

Fannie Withers
Fannie Harris Withers, 88, 43 Morris Ave., died Thursday, Sept. 5, 1996, in Britthave of Keysville.
Born Aug. 22, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Irving Harris Sr. and Nora Adkins Harris.
She was married
to Robert Clyde Withers, who died in 1980.
She was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church. For 30 years, she was employed by Dan River Inc. in the sewing department.
She is survived by a sister, Mary Dodson of Danville and a brother, Irvin Harris of Gatewood, N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Daryl S. Joyce and Chaplain Eldridge Wilson. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her sister, 330 Arlington Place.
Sallie Carter
Sallie Burnette Carter, 83, of Route 1, Axton, died in Danville Regional Medical Center Friday night, Sept. 6, 1996.
Born May 23, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walter Gauldin and Alberta McDaniel Gauldin.
She lived all of her life in the county and had lived in the Axton community for 17 years. She was a graduate of Brosville High School and was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.
She was first married
to Jessie L. Burnette, who died in 1975, and she was later married
to Sam K. Carter.
In addition to her husband of Axton, survivors include her mother of Martinsville; four daughters, Nancy Dean, Patsy Scearce, Brenda Burnett, all of Danville, and Sylvia Shoe of Smithfield, N.C.; two sons, Charles Burnette of Danville and Ronnie Burnette of Martinsville; two stepsons, Elbert Carter and Billy Carter, both of Axton; one sister, Katie Marie Anthony of Kannoplis, N.C.; two brothers, James Gauldin and Clay Gauldin, both of Danville; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and three great-stepgrandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Monday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Carty and the Rev. Steven Greer with burial in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Mary Farthing
Mary Short Farthing, 87, of 207 Brentwood Drive, died Saturday morning, Sept. 7, 1996.
Born Aug. 21, 1909, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Floyd S. Short and Permelia Moon Short.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Bennett Farthing; two brothers, Jim Short and Cedric Short; and two sisters, Evelyn Gilliland and Virginia Ingram.
She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Women's Adult Sunday school class and a member of the W.M.U. Circle.
Survivors include two sons, M. Ray Farthing and James M. Farthing, both of Gretna; three daughters, Nellie F. McDaniel, Kathleen F. Merchant, both of Danville, and Jean F. Yates of Lynchburg; two brothers, Eric T. Short and Bennett Short, both of Cody; five sisters, Ada Saunders of Cincinnati, Ohio, Geneva Motley of Salisbury, N.C., Fleecie Fisher, Thelma Massey and Elizabeth Wood, all of Lynchburg; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Greenfield Baptist Church by the Rev. R.G. Rowland and the Rev. Michael Campbell. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Robert Dalton
Robert Jackson Dalton, 85, of Route 1, Axton, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 1996, in memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Jan. 22, 1911, in Mt. Airy, he was the son of Jesse L. Dalton and Bessie T. Dalton Brey.
He was self-employed as a commercial fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Eula D. Dalton of Route 1, Axton; one daughter, Mildred Himes of Marshalltown, Iowa; two step-daughters, Dollie Little of Axton and Patsy I. Haynie of Reedville; two step-sons, Fletcher Edwards Jr. of California and Hardin H. Edwards of Martinsville; four brothers, James Dalton of Weldon, N.C.; A.W. "Bo" Dalton of Poland, Id., Willard R. Dalton of Indianapolis, and Elvin T. Dalton of Hurtford, N.C.; three sisters, Katie Via of Richmond, Nellie Privett of Danville, and Nora B. Gammon of Indianapolis.
The funeral wil be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home by the Rev. Don Reynolds and the Rev. Francis Martin. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

Thomas Harris
CALLANDS - Thomas Harris, 71, of 272 Peakland Road, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 12, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Freddie and Lula Dickerson Harris.
He was a retired employee of Hooker Furniture Co., and attended Schoolfield Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Harris of the residence; one daughter, Christobel Leftwich of Huber Heights, Ohio; three brothers, Clarence Harris and Irvin Harris both of Callands, and Charlie Harris of Martinsville; two sisters, Mary Sue Price and Ruby Price both of Callands; two granddaughters and one great granddaughter.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Schoolfield Primitive Baptist Church by Elder E. A. Edwards, Elder Clarence Jamison and Elder George Dawson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the funeral.
The family will receive friends at the home of a brother, Clarence Harris, at Route 1, Callands.

Ruth Parsons
Ruth Shelton Parsons, 74, of 548 Ingram St., died suddenly Sunday, Sept. 8, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in the hospital for one day.
Born Aug. 11, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Chapley Swanson Shelton and Lizzie Austin Shelton.
She spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, where she had retired from the Reverside Knit Division of Dan River Inc. after 35 years of service.
She was a member of The Tabernackle where she served as secretary of the Auditorium Bible Class. She was also active with the Senior Group of the Tabernacle and was a former Sunday school teacher in the Old Baptist Tabernacle.
She was a member of the Dan River Retirees Club.
On Dec. 22, 1945, she was married
to Joseph A. Parsons, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Peggy Jo Parsons of Danville; one sister, Hattie S. Carswell of Waynesboro; and one brother, Clarence Paul Shelton of Gretna.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from The Tabernacle by the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at The Tabernacle, 1978 South Boston Road, and other times will be at the residence, 548 Ingram St.
