Charles Austin Sr.
Charles Melvin Austin Sr., 64, 1421 Stony Mill Road, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 1996, in the residence of his son, following five years of declining health.
Born July 27, 1932, in the Hindsville community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Robert Calvin Austin and Gladys Powell Austin.
He was predeceased by his former wife, Iris Rozelle Austin, who died March 14, 1989.
He lived in the Sharon community for many years. He was employed as a well driller. Then, he operated Austin Brothers Grocery Store.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 of the Veterans of Foreign War.
He was also of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet Austin of Woodlawn Drive; a son, Charles Melvin Austin Jr. of Stony Mill Road; two sisters, Louise Robinson and Frances Dill, both of Danville; six brothers, James E. Austin of Dry Fork, Richard Calvin Austin and William L. Austin, both of Danville, and Marvin S. Austin, David J. Austin and Michael J. Austin, all of Mount Cross Road; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Bennett Shelton and the Rev. Michael Hearp. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens, where full military honors will be given by American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Earl Collins
RINGGOLD - A graveside service for Earl David Collins, 79, 287 Deerfield Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery by the Rev. Henry W. Taylor and the Rev. Howard Green.
He died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1996, in Franklin Memorial Hospital of Rocky Mount. He had been in declining health for four years.
Born Dec. 2, 1916, in Dry Fork, he was a son of George Craighead Collins and Louanna Mills Collins.
On July 20, 1935, he was married
to Jimmie Haymore Collins, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Dry Fork and Ringgold communities. He had been a resident of Elder Care Nursing Home in Rocky Mount since June 20.
He was a farmer and also worked for Dan River Mills. Prior to his retirement in 1981, he was employed by Disston.
He was a member of St. Mark Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he served as a deacon, on the Administrative Board and as an usher.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Rachel C. Bailey of Lorton; two sons, Paul D. Collins of Danville and Jerry W. Collins of Sutherlin; three sisters, Nettie C. Mills and Edna C. Emerson, both of Dry Fork, and Elizabeth C. Daniel of Ringgold; one half-sister, Eva Moss of Danville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Zenius Collins.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Zachary Collins
LEBANON, TENN. - Zachary Taylor Collins, 88, of Lebanon, Tenn., died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1996, in University Medical Center.
Born in South Boston, Va., he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Theo T. Collins.
He was married
to Ada Guill Collins, who died in 1980.
He was a former resident of Danville, Va., where he was employed by Anderson Brother's as a plant supervisor until his retirement.
He was affiliated with Westland United Methodist Church and was a member of the Mosely Memorial United Methodist Church in Virginia.
He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Collins Colbert of Lebanon; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Richard Cobb.

Jesse Kent Sr.
The funeral for Jesse Elwood Kent Sr. of Danville will be conducted 11 a.m. today from Moffett Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Ellison. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
He died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1996, in his residence, following a lengthy illness.
Born March 9, 1912, in Danville, he was a son of William Edward Kent and Alice Perkins Kent.
For 63 years, he was married
to Margaret Hall Kent, who survives.
He was a charter member and past president of Danville Sertoma Club. He was also a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday school director, deacon and as chairman of the board of deacons.
He owned and operated Kent Motor Co. for 25 years. He retired from Blackwell Dodge in 1977.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Jesse Elwood Kent Jr. of Roanoke and Donald Hall Kent of Alexandria; two sisters, Marion Mangrum of Danville and Dorothy Hammock of Richmond; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Joseph Maxie Jr.
The funeral for Joseph R. Maxie Jr., 71, 2600 Mount Cross Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bill Soyars. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
He died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1996, in his residence, following eight months of declining health.
Born June 25, 1925, in Danville, he was a son of Joseph Raymond Maxie Sr. and Elsie Franklin Maxie Collie, who survives.
On Nov. 26, 1942, he was married
to Ruth Taylor Maxie, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Mount Cross Road community of Pittsylvania County. Prior to his retirement in 1987, he was a self-employed salesman. He was also a member of Shermont Baptist Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, in which he received the Purple Heart.
In addition to his mother of Danville and his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Linda M. Webster of Crewe and Cathy M. Pruitt of Ruffin, N.C.; three sons, Wayne Maxie of Virginia Beach, Douglas C. Maxie of Trinity, N.C., and Joseph R. Maxie III of Chattanooga, Tenn.; four sisters, Evelyn Pena, Naomi McDaniel and Rebecca Mitchell, all of Danville, and Margaret Hearp of Dry Fork; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Hugh Oliver
Hugh Bailey Oliver, 72, 211 Swain Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 17, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Oliver and Josephine Denny Oliver.
He was married
to Ora Castella Miller Oliver, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the military. He was also a member of White Oak Grove Baptist Church in Dry Fork.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include five daughters, Anita O. Garrison of Queens, N.Y., Patricia A. Oliver, Gwendolyn E. Oliver and Antionett Bonds, all of Bronx, N.Y., and Carolyn H. Oliver of New York; two stepdaughters, Valerie Grice of Hempstead, N.Y., and Linda C. Miller of Springdale, Md.; a son, Pvt. Darkeen Oliver of Fort Sill, Okla.; three stepsons, Larry Miller of Danville, Major Dallas W. Miller of Panama, and Robert Miller of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a brother, William Oliver Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; three sisters, Beatrice Withers of Pelham, N.C., Frances Morefield of Danville and Louise Anderson of Petersburg; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. E.L. Pope. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, where military honors will be given by American Legion Post No. 325.

Halden Shelton
CHATHAM - The funeral for Edgar Halden Shelton, 79, 3049 Mill Creek Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. James Bullock and the Rev. Carson Dalton. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where Masonic rites will be conducted.
He died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 23, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Stephen Shelton and Lillian Burch Shelton.
He was married
to Bertha Dalton Shelton, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Pittsylvania County Health Department as a sanitarian.
He was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer for 58 years. He was also a deacon and trustee.
He was a member of Pittsylvania Lodge No. 24 A.F. and A.M. and of Morgan Johnson Chapter No. 44 of Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of Chatham Lions Club, and of Gideon International.
He served on the board of directors of Pittsylvania County Community Action and was a charter member of Chatham Rescue Squad. He was also past moderator of Pittsylvania Baptist Association. He was also past member of Pittsylvania County Cancer Society.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Linda Logsdon of Hot Springs, Ark., Frances S. Fell of Denver and Kathy S. Anderson of Chatham; two sons, Steve Shelton of Statesville, N.C., and Donald Shelton of Chatham; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

George Wright
George William Wright, 84, 1228 Westover Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following four years of declining health.
Born Sept. 15, 1911, in the Callands community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charlie Martin Wright and Nannie Martin Wright.
He was married
to Martha Aaron Wright, who survives.
He had lived on Westover Drive for 50 years, where he owned and operated Wright Grocery. He was a retired merchant. He was also a member of County Line Christian Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of Chapter 19 D.A.V.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sisters, Mary Payne of Rustburg and Maude Holley of Callands; and three brothers, Clarence Wright of Dry Fork, Andrew Wright of Martinsville and Cooper Wright of Birmingham, Ala.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. J.D. Hunt III, the Rev. Mark Sizemore and the Rev. Haywood Alcorn.

Yvonne Davis
Yvonne Flora Davis, 72, 149 Holbrook Ave., died Friday, Aug. 30, 1996, in her residence, following three months of declining health.
Born May 17, 1924, in Danville, she was a daughter of Charlie B. Flora and Clarice Turner Flora.
She was married
to Jasper R. Davis, who survives.
She was a graduate of George Washington High School and attended Longwood College.
She spent most of her life in the Westover Hills community. She was employed by the City of Danville as a director and supervisor of customer service in the city's utility department.
She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and of the Retired Workers Club for Danville City Employee's Credit Union.
In addition to her husband of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Nancy Davis Tate of Danville; a son, James B. Davis of Danville; two sisters, Nancy Flora Felix of Danville and Jane Flora Burton of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother, Charlie B. Flora Jr. of Chattanooga, Tenn.; her stepmother, Irene K. Flora of Greensboro, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Fairview United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry Edmonds. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Martha Miller
Martha Fitzgerald Miller, 69, 709 Betts St., died Thursday, Aug. 30, 1996, in Stratford Health Care Center.
Born June 25, 1927, she was a daughter of Arthur Fitzgerald and Mary Jones Fitzgerald.
She was married
to Eddie Miller, who survives.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dibrell Brothers and by Stanley Furniture Co.
She was a member of Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ.
In addition to her husband of Danville, she is survived by two sisters, Gladys Skipper and Queen Wells, both of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ on Industrial Avenue by the Rev. Clevester Edmonds. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
