Carolyn Walker
RICHMOND - Carolyn F. Walker died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1996.
Survivors include four sisters, Louise W. Jennings of Knoxville, Tenn., Winona F. Walker of Greensboro, N.C., Hope W. Carpenter of Glade Valley, N.C., and Mary C. Walker of Richond; and a brother, Daniel T. Walker of Pelham, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday from First Baptist Church Chapel in Richmond. A graveside service will be held 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Oak Ridge cemetery in South Boston.
The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 tonight at Parham Chapel Woody Funeral Home, in Richmond.
Margie Ward
CHATHAM - Margie Lee Anderson Ward, 71, Route 6, Concord Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1996, in her residence.
Born Nov. 13, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Orren G. Anderson and Mollie Sours Anderson.
She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Richmond Wood Working Co. as a secretary.
She is survived by two sons, Miles A. Ward of Portland, Ore., and Robert F. Ward Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Sours Family cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home, in Chatham, and other times at the residence.
Lawrence Arthur
Charles Lawrence "Boggie" Arthur, 63, 851 Melville Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health since 1990.
Born Aug. 18, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Henry Arthur and Mamie Burton Arthur.
On June 4, 1982, he was married
to Dimple Jones Roberts Arthur, who survives.
He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, where he was employed by a number of construction companies as job superintendent. He retired due to health reasons.
He was one of the founding members of Victory Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and choir leader.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Tonie Arthur Barber of Danville; a step-daughter, Karen R. Gerbitz of Oklahoma City; a step-son, Garrett Wayne Roberts of Seattle; two brothers, the Rev. J.B. Arthur of Marion and Leroy Arthur of Danville; and three step-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Hylton Lawrence, the Rev. J.B. Arthur and the Rev. Joe Arthur. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Rev. Rolyn Dix
LOS ANGELES - The Rev. Rolyn A. Dix, of Nashville, Tenn., died Sunday, Aug. 11, 1996.
She was a daughter of Roland H. Dix Sr. and Evelyn Harrell Dix, who survive.
In addition to her parents, survivors include two brothers, Roland H. Dix Jr., and Dr. David O. Dix; a sister, Carolyn E. Dix; and an aunt, Helene F. Dix of Danville, Va.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday in Los Angeles.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 3916 South Orange Drive.
Clara Hundley
Clara Coffey Hundley, 82, of Rocky Mount, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1996.
She is survived by a brother, Jack Coffey of Salem, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph U. Hundley; two brothers, Willard Coffey and James Coffey; and by two sisters, Beatrice Prevette and Inez Carson.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jackie Spence. The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Lynch Funeral Home, in Rocky Mount. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. today.
James Martin
James Powell Martin, 73, 1348 Piney Forest Road, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 3, 1923, in Lumberton, N.C., he was a son of Rosetta Martin Ross.
He was married
to Ethel Sergeon Martin, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army in Korea. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Schewell Furniture Co. He was also of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Tammye Martin of Silver Spring, Md.; and a son, James C. Martin of Staten Island, N.Y.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from L.H. Brooks and Bro. Funeral Chapel by the Rev. W. J. Toomer. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Giles Pruitt
The funeral for Giles Pruitt, 97, 1608 Crane Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Scott Funeral Home Chapel, in Chatham, by the Rev. Gene R. Ashworth. Burial will be in Oak Grove Christian Church cemetery.
He died Monday, Aug. 12, 1996, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 9, 1898, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lindsey Pruitt and Rebecca Jane Price Pruitt.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Creasy Pruitt.
He was employed for over 30 years by Motley's Warehouse. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army Calvary. He was also a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Amy P. Cole of Richmond and Alice P. Ashworth of Gretna; two sons, Nelson G. Pruitt of Crewe and Larry L. Pruitt of Danville; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Willie Stephens
Willie Arnie Stephens, 52, 197 Ashworth Lane, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1996, in the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, following a year of declining health.
Born Oct. 30, 1943, in Vero Beach, Fla., he was a son of Arnie Wilber Stephens, and Maggie Thomas Stephens Norton, who survives.
He was employed by Virginia State Police Department as a state trooper and patrolman.
He spent most of his life in the Danville area, but worked in other parts of the state as a patrolman.
During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of Mount Herman Baptist Church and the Virginia Bass Association.
In addition to his mother, survivors two sons, Scott Stephens of Harrisonburg and Arnie Stephens of Norton; a daughter, Millie Stephens of Harrisonburg; two brothers, Thomas Stephens of Raleigh, N.C., and Nathan Stephens of Salem; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Mount Herman Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Davidson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Alvin Yates
LYNCHBURG - Alvin L. Yates, 63, 9115 Oakland Circle, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1996, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Feb. 11, 1933, in Java, he was a son of Rodger Prior and Maude Earley Yates.
He was married
to Jean Farthing Yates.
He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by American General Insurance Co. as a sales manager. He was also a member of several civic organizations.
He attended Spring Garden High School in Chatham. He also served in the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Bradford L. "Brad" Yates of Gainesville, Fla.; a brother, Julian R. Yates of Java; and a sister, Betty Mehalko of Highland Springs.
He was predeceased by a brother, William R. Yates.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Diuguid Waterlick Chapel, in Lynchburg, by the Rev. William G. Putnam. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park in Danville.

Virginia Hoskins
Virginia H. Hoskins, 69, 1732 Maple Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following four months of declining health.
Born March 25, 1927, in Meadowview, she was a daughter of Joseph D. Hockett and Nettie Dinkle Hockett McDaniel, who survives.
She was married
to Thomas C. Hoskins Jr., who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. Prior to her retirement in March 1990, she was employed by Dan River Inc. in No. 8 Inspection for many years. She was also a member of Timberlake Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother of Altavista, and her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Carolyn H. Compton of Danville; a son, Thomas David Hoskins of Smyrna, Ga.; five sisters, Dorothy Melton and Rebecca Bishop, both of Greensboro, N.C., Josephine Hockett of Reidsville, N.C., Joyce Dalton of Gretna, and Gloria McDaniel of Altavista; a brother, Roosevelt Hockett of Lynchburg; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Wilbur Hockett and Robert Hockett.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Timberlake Baptist Church by the Rev. Jimmie L. Pruitt. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Frank Mitchell Jr.
Frank Mitchell Jr., 52, 525 Harrison St., died Thursday, Aug. 15, 1996, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem.
He was born May 1, 1944, in Martinsville.
He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was also a member of First Baptist Church.
A graveside service will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Monday from Oak Hill cemetery by the Rev. J.P. Griffin. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Warren Powell Sr.
Warren Anderson Powell Sr., 64, 128 Woodberry Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 1996, in his residence, following six months of declining health.
Born Jan. 21, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Ellis Odell Powell and Georgia Pruitt Powell.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was employed by Yellow Freight Systems Inc. as a driver. After retiring, he was employed by Burns Security.
He was married
to Sallie Davis, who survives.
He was a member of Lighthouse Independent Methodist Church. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Tony Odell Powell of Danville and W.A. Powell Jr. of Callands; a sister, Wilma Powell Daniel of Dry Fork; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday from Swicegood Chapel. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
