Gail Perkins
HURT - Gail Crawley Perkins, 47, of 1436 Pocket Road, Hurt, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 1996, in Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born April 27, 1949, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Thomas Ramsey Crawley and Ola Pickeral Crawley.
She was first married
to Clyde D. Shelton Jr., who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Irene C. David and Janice Crawley.
She was the owner of Gail's Beauty Salon and a member of Gretna Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Calvin Perkins, of the residence; one son, Berkeley Shelton of Gretna; one daughter, Robin Stephens of Chapel Hill, N.C.; four brothers, Russell Crawley of Chatham, Earnest Crawley of Lexington, Ind., Danny Crawley of Evington, and Sam Crawley of Center, Colo.; four sisters, Christine Oakes of Gretna, and Shirley Barley, Carolyn Bailess and Jeanette Bailess, all of Hurt; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Gretna Christian Church by the Rev. Cecil Rhodes. Interment will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times will be a the residence.
John Clark
John Wesley Clark, 86, of 2497 Afton Road, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 1996, in Piney Forest Health Care Center. He had been in declining health for five years and in the nursing home for four months.
Born Sept. 14, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Rasmoe "Raz" C. Clark and Quillie Hyler Clark.
He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County and worked for many years in the inspection department of the Schoolfield Division of Dan River Inc. He had also worked as a security guard for Dan River Inc. until his retirement. In addition, he sold Raleigh products locally for many years.
He was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church, where he was a past choir member and board member.
He was also a member of the Improved Order of Red Men, Poquoson Tribe 124.
In January 1929, he was married
to Annie Kate Gammon Clark, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Wesley D. Clark of Danville; one daughter, Barbara C. Shively of Danville; two sisters, Erna C. Shively and Adeleen C. Overby both of Danville; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Design United Methodist Church by the Rev. William C. Taylor and the Rev. Ronald E. Graham. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times will be at the residence.

Christopher Turner
CASCADE - Lance Cpl. Christopher Daniel Turner, 21, of 1440 Huntington Trail, died Friday, Aug. 9, 1996, in the line of duty in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Born May 29, 1975, in Danville, he was the son of Charles Turner and Kathy Scearce Turner Jones, who survive.
He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County, where he was a 1994 graduate of Tunstall High School.
While in high school, he was a member of the Danville Police Department's Explorer's club.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1995, and was a member of Sharon Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Cascade and father of Dry Fork; include his step-father, Dewey L. Jones of Cascade; two brothers, Michael Turner of Norfolk and Joel Moschler of Danville; one step-brother, Chris Jones of Eden, N.C.; and two step-sisters, Katye Grubb of Eden, N.C.; and Lisa Jones of Florida.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1440 Huntington Trail, Cascade.
Martha Frazier
Martha Ann Harrison Collins Frazier, 213 Cambell St., died Thursday, Aug. 8, 1996, in Duke University Medical Center.
Born Feb. 10, 1928, in Lawrenceville of Brunswick County, she was a daughter of Robert and Virginia Harrison.
She was predeceased by her husband, Otis Odell Frazier.
After moving from Lawrenceville to New York City, she came to Danville to live. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lawrenceville.
Survivors include three sons, Larry Collins of New York, Gregory Frazier and Otis Frazier, both of Danville; four daughters, Joyce Collins Tonge, Marie Frazier, Lucinda Frazier, and Gladys Frazier, all of Danville; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. today from Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. James E. Stewart. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Noell Jones Sr.
CHATHAM - Noell Franklin Jones Sr., 90, Route 4, Box 184, Chatham, in the Callands community, died Monday, Aug. 12, 1996, in Riverside Health Care Center. He had been in declining health for the past year.
Born July 6, 1906, in Rockingham County, he was a son of Andra Jones and Dee Crews Jones.
He was married
to Eva Owen Jones, who died Nov. 9, 1989.
He spent most of his life in Danville, but had lived in the Callands community for the past eight years. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Johnson-Lentz Drug Store as a sales clerk.
He was a member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church and of the T.P.A. for 50 years.
Survivors include a son, Noell Franklin Jones Jr. of the residence; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Richard Cobb and Dr. Woodrow Giles. Burial will be in the Owen Family cemetery in Brosville.

Cecil Marlowe
AXTON - Cecil Anzley Marlowe, 85, Route 2, Box 289, died Monday, Aug. 12, 1996, in the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Jan. 1, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Claude Andrew Marlowe and Ruth Reynolds Marlowe.
He was married
to Mary Lucy Haskins Marlowe, who survives.
He was a member of County Line Christian Church, where he served as superintendent of Sunday school for 41 years. He was a retired farmer.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Lloyd A. Marlowe of Sedona, Ariz., and Ernest Cecil Marlowe of Axton; two daughters, Mrs. Billy (Cecelia) Donavant of Martinsville and Mrs. Sherman (Ardie) Prater of Axton; a brother, Sammie C. Marlowe of Callands; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from County Line Christian Church by the Rev. Dean Ashby and the Rev. Craig Hagen. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church, and other times at the residence, on State Highway Route 57.

Ruth Brumfield
Ruth Brumfield, 84, 627 Arnett Blvd., #7, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following six years of declining health.
Born Dec. 16, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Luther F. Brumfield and Dora Collins Brumfield.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Mills Inc. for 42 years prior to her retirement. She was also a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two sisters, Lola B. Fuller of Mount Hermon and Virginia B. McDowell of Danville; and a brother, Charles F. Brumfield Sr. of Mount Hermon.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Silas D. Brumfield, Clarence D. Brumfield, and Matthew C. Brumfield, and by a sister, Newrie B. Johnson.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday from Keen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Campbell and the Rev. Thomas Wright. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Mary Hoffmeister
TEMPE, ARIZ. - Mary Agnes Witcher Hoffmeister, 86, formerly of Danville, died Sept. 27, 1995, in the Health Care Center of Friendship Village Retirement Community.
She was born March 27, 1909, in Danville, Va., where she attended the city's public schools.
She graduated from Averett College with a degree in music. She furthered her study in classical music and graduated from Peabody Music Conservatory in Baltimore, Md.
In 1933, she was married
to John F. Hoffmeister. She made her home in Pittsburgh and Minneapolis, before moving to Arizona.
She is survived by a son, John F. Hoffmeister, and one grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Dana Hunt.

Bernie Moats
SANDERSVILLE, Ga. - Bernie Lee Alexander Moats, 81, 201 East McCarty St., died Monday, Aug. 12, 1996, in her residence, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Atlanta, she was a daughter of John B. Alexander and Bell Carroll Alexander.
She was predeceased by her husband, James T. Moats.
She spent most of her life in Washington County. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Royal Mamufacturing Co. and J.P. Stevens Co. She was also a homemaker and a member of First Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include two daughters, Jewell M. Milley of Danville, Va., and Jeanette M. Welch of Sandersville; a son, William H. Moats of Sandersville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from First Church of the Nazarene in Sandersville by the Rev. J. Emory Lindsey. Burial will be in Washington County Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the Welch residence, 201 East McCarty St., Sandersville.

Giles Pruitt
Giles Pruitt, 97, 1608 Crane Road, died Monday, Aug. 12, 1996, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 9, 1898, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lindsey Pruitt and Rebecca Jane Price Pruitt.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Creasy Pruitt.
He was employed for over 30 years by Motley's Warehouse. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army Calvary. He was also a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Amy P. Cole of Richmond and Alice P. Ashworth of Gretna; two sons, Nelson G. Pruitt of Crewe and Larry L. Pruitt of Danville; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Chatham, by the Rev. Gene R. Ashworth. Burial will be in Oak Grove Christian Church cemetery.
