Nancy Collins
ROANOKE - Nancy Adeline Collins, 93, of Roanoke, and formerly of Danville, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1996.
Born June 12, 1903, in Patrick County, she was a daughter of Nancy Harriet Clifton and Putnam N. Boyd.
In 1919, she was married
to Oscar Adrian Collins.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a charter member of West Main Baptist Church. She was also a member of Danville Senior Citizens Club and Danville AARP. For the past three years, she lived at a retirement community near her family in the Roanoke area.
Survivors include two daughters, Nell Collins Thompson of Daleville and Nancy Adnia Collins McDowell of Vera Beach, Fla., three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Radar Daleville Chapel by the Rev. James George and the Rev. Marsha Davidson. Burial will be held 3 p.m. Saturday in Mountain View cemetery in Danville by the Rev. Bruce Wilson.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Monsie Haley
GRETNA - Monsie Edward Haley, 69, 603 Leftwich St., died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1996, in his residence.
Born May 24, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Reuben Bennett Haley and Ione Bobbitt Haley.
He was married
to Mary Alice Schwitzerlett Haley, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Hunt Oil & Tire Co. During World War II, he served in the Navy.
He was a member of Piney Fork Baptist Church, where he formerly served as a deacon and as chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was awarded the title of Deacon Emertius by the church. He also served as the Sunday school superintendent and teacher for many years.
He was a former associational director of the Pittsylvania County Baptist Association, a member of American Legion Post No. 232 in Gretna, and a member of the Gideons.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Michael Haley of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Martha H. Jefferson of Gretna; two brothers, Charles Haley and J.D. Haley, both of Danville; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Guy Haley and a sister, Isia Brumfield.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Piney Fork Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph Glass and the Rev. Ernest Roebuck. Interment will be in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Sandra Horne
Sandra Louise Horne, 49, formerly of 529 Cedarbrook Drive, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 1996, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following three years of declining health.
Born July 28, 1947, in South Boston, she was a daughter of Monroe S. Horne and Ella Harris Horne, who survive.
She spent most of her life in Virginia and the Danville area. She was a member of Central Boulevard Church of God.
In addition to her parents of the residence, survivors include three sisters, Barbara Elaine Morrow of Shawsville, Betty Elizabeth Higgins of Memphis, Tenn., and Audrey Gale Hackworth of Irvine, Ky.; her paternal grandfather, David Horne and her paternal step-grandmother, Virgie Horne, both of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Central Boulevard Church of God by the Rev. John H. Meadows. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Velma Howard
Velma Hughes Howard, 71, 591 Elizabeth St., died Thursday, Oct. 17, 1996, in her residence, following five years of declining health.
Born July 25, 1925, in Stuart, she was a daughter of Ocie Hughes.
On Aug. 29, 1945, she was married
to James Odie Howard, who survives.
She had lived in Danville since the early 1940s, where she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a son, Leon Howard of Danville; four sisters, Arlene Shelar and Beadie Kallam, both of Ridgeway, Dot Terry of Alexandria, and Ruby McGirk of Clearwater, Fla.; two brothers, William Bruce Hughes of Goldsboro, N.C., and John Taylor Hughes of Savannah, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday form Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Kyle Flora. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Lizzie Motley
Lizzie Mae Motley, 77, 121 W. Thomas St., died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 20, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Hester Fitzgerald and Cornelia Stone Fitzgerald.
She was married
to Ervin Motley Sr., who predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dibrell Tobacco Factory. She was also a member of Greater Deliverance Temple.
Survivors include a son, Ervin Motley Jr. of Danville; four daughters, Louise Motley of Semora, N.C., Thelma Eldridge of Sutherlin, Queen Edmunds and Sylvia Wilson, both of Danville; four brothers, William Fitzgerald and James Fitzgerald, both of Danville, Jessie L. Fitzgerald of Blairs, John W. Fitzgerald of Chatham, eight sisters, Luberta Carter, Irene Bennett, and Lillie Kirby, all of Danville, Rosa Medley, Geneva Echols, and Martha Scates, all of Chatham, Dorothy R. Thomas and Beatrice Thomas, both of Dry Fork; 27 grandchildren; and 57 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Greater Deliverance Temple by Elder Roger L. Jackson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Annie Redd
CHATHAM - Annie Anderson Redd, 81, 1704 Spring Garden Road, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 1996, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born June 18, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charles Howard Anderson and Lena Lewis Anderson.
She was married
to Willie Edward Redd, who survives.
She was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of Spring Garden, survivors include seven daughters, Audrey R. Crane of Dry Fork, Estelle R. Shelton of Chatham, Judy R. Whitt of King George, Margo R. Calabro of St. Cloud, Fla., Susan M. Redd of Portsmouth, Shirley R. Hogan and Faye R. Hutcherson, both of Danville; three sons, Willie E. Redd Jr. of Chatham, John A. Redd of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Lewis B. Redd of Atlanta; four brothers, Otis K. Anderson of Radford, Harry L. Anderson and Algie Anderson, both of Danville, Gilbert Anderson of Yanceyville, N.C.; five sisters, Mildred A. Boles, Pattie A. Haskins, Elizabeth A. Heffinger, and Jeanette A. Brown, all of Danville, and Clara A. Moser of Java; 23 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday form Shockoe Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael S. Huff. Burial will be in Saint Paul's Episcopal Church cemetery.

William Alden Jr.
SALEM - William F. Alden Jr., 73, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 1996, in the Veterans Hospital of Salem.
Born in Danville, he graduated from Schoolfield High School. During World War II, he served in the 82nd Airborne. Following the war, he continued his education at Wake Forest University, and later received a master's degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He lived in Charlotte, N.C., for many years, where he was employed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield as district manager.
He was married
to Ruth Alden, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Charlotte, N.C., survivors include two sons, William Frank Alden III of Apex, N.C., and John S. Alden of Stanley, N.C.; two daughters, Kathryn Megorden and Victoria Brys, both of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Roger B. Alden of Greensboro, N.C., and John D. Alden of Williamsburg; two sisters, Kathryn Oakes of Danville and Betty Jordan of Little Rock, Ark.; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. today from Saint Andrews Episcopal Church in Charlotte, N.C., by Father Walter Edwards. Burial will be in the church's memorial gardens.

Lila Allen
PETERSBURG - Lila Mae Allen, 82, of the Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville, died Friday, Aug. 9, 1996, in Hirman Davis Medical Center of Petersburg. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born May 3, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Alonza Allen and Sally Farthing Allen.
She spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Schoolfield Division of Dan River Mills Inc. in the sewing room for over 25 years. She was also a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Allie Neal Allen and William "Jack" Allen, both of Danville.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Frank Allen, Omer Allen and Harry Allen; and by three sisters, Florence A. Hall, Nellie A. Nuckles and Cecil A. Giles.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Edward L. Earl. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Holt Barksdale Sr.
Holt Willis Barksdale Sr., 43, 407 East Ave., died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 5, 1953, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Nannie Louise Barksdale.
He was married
to Henrietta Barksdale, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Holt Willis Barksdale Jr. and Damar Barksdale, both of Danville; two daughters, Princess Barksdale and Nicole Barksdale, both of Danville; and a brother, Bernard Barksdale of Java.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel by Bishop William Yarbrough. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

J. Haywood Crider
CHATHAM - J. Haywood Crider, 73, 827 Evergreen Road, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 1996, in Duke University Medical Center.
Born May 13, 1923, in Peytonsburg in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Henry Crider and Mabel Amos Crider.
He was married
to Hazel Amos Crider, who survives.
In 1959, he founded Crider Tire Service, and was active in this business with his sons.
He served on the Chatham Town Council from 1960-1970 and from 1990-1992. He served three terms as the mayor of Chatham from 1970-1976 and again from 1992 until the present.
He was a founding member of the board of directors of Pittsylvania Industrial Development Corp. He also served on the board of directors of Faith Home. He was a charter member and former president of Chatham Jaycees, and served as vice president of Virginia Jaycees. He was also a former member of the Chatham Volunteer Fire Department and past president of Cedars Country Club.
He was a founder and member of the first board of directors of Woodlawn Academy. He assisted in organizing the Chatham High School Cavalier Boosters Club, where he served as the first president.
For many years, he sponsored Little League, Sandy Koufax, and Mickey Mantle baseball teams.
In 1987, he was named Citizen of the Year by the Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce.
He was also a member of Chatham Christian Church.
In addition to his wife of Chatham, survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth C. Knighton of Martinsville; two sons, Alvin R. Crider of Chatham and Jay Crider of Danville; two sisters, Virginia C. Forney and Phyllis C. East, both of Chatham; a brother, Carlton A. Crider of Chatham; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Chatham Christian Church by the Rev. Carson A. Dalton. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

John Edmunds
John Hadrick Edmunds, 73, 237 Crosland Ave., died Thursday, Aug. 8, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following six months of declining health.
Born March 1, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Edgar P. Edmunds and Mary Yeatts Edmunds.
On July 17, 1948, he was married
to Virginia Riddle Edmunds, who survives.
He was a retired farmer who spent most of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. During World War II, he served in the Army. He was also a former member of Southall Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Bettie May of New Orleans; two brothers, George C. Edmunds of Danville and Kenneth M. Edmunds of Reidsville, N.C.; two sisters, Merle E. Puckett of Danville and Ruby E. Pressley of Ringgold; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, E.P. Edmunds and William "Billy" N. Edmunds; and by a sister, Ruth E. Francis.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Jimmy Pruitt. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
