Margaret A. Riep, 76, of Fredericksburg, formerly of Washington, DC died on Friday, October 4, 2002 at Onyx Assisted Living Center. She is survived by a sister, Catherine T. Reese of Alexandria; two nieces, Margaret C. Reames of Fairfax Station and Jacqueline M. Reese of Odenton, MD; two great nephews; a great niece and a great-great niece and nephew. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold H. Riep. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2002 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Fredericksburg at 2:00 pm with Father Kenna officiating. Inurnment will take place on Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at Cedar Hill cemetery, Suitland, MD at 1:00 pm. Norviel Berkley Davis, 74, of Fredericksburg died Dec. 21, 2002 at Mary Washington Hospital. He loved to spend time fishing and looked forward to visits from his children and grandchildren. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Peggy W. Davis of Fredericksburg; two daughters, Pamela Davis of Marshall and Terry Hodge of Woodford; a son, Jeffrey Davis; and six loving grandchildren. Mr. James Garfield Martz, IV, 49 of Stafford County died Saturday November 30, 2002 at his home. Jim worked in Quality Assurance for the Bureau of Land Management for many years. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Lane Martz; a daughter, Danielle H. Martz of the home; two sons, Austin F. Martz and Justin S. Martz both of the home; his mother, Geraldine Martz of California; three sisters, Terry Berkin, Adriane Butler and Hilary Martz all of California; a brother, Craig Martz of California and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mary V. Harrington 79 of Fredericksburg died Saturday November 2, 2002 at Madonna House. She retired from Mary Washington Hospital as an Admissions Clerk in 1985. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband of 60 years Joseph W. Harrington; a daughter, Theresa L. Wilcox of Fredericksburg; a son, Joseph R. Harrington of Fredericksburg; a sister, Shirley Cavender of West Palm Beach, FL.; a brother, Arlie Huffman of West Palm Beach, FL; a grandson, Jason S. William Monroe Thompson, III, "B.T." 59, of Culpeper died Sunday, October 6, 2002, at his residence. He was born August 5, 1943 in Stevensburg to Elsie C. Thompson and the late William Monroe Thompson, Jr. Mr. Thompson was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He enjoyed refurnishing furniture and hunting.. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of thirteen years, Shirley Deane Thompson, five stepchildren, Jewel Brown, Gregory Deane and his wife, Kathy, George Deane and his wife, Brenda, James Deane and his wife, Vanessa and Mark Deane and his wife, Yolanda all of Culpeper and numerous grandchildren. Additional survivors include three sisters, Betty Myers and her husband, Don both of Culpeper, Shirley Thompson of Chicago, IL, and Mary Lee Smith and her husband, Randy both of Arizona, two nieces, Karen Calvert of Culpeper and Michele Kimbell of Indiana, one nephew, Fred L. Mr. Raymond Charles Carter, 49 of Spotsylvania died Tuesday October 1, 2002 at the UVA Hospital. Raymond was born in Arlington and lived in the Alexandria area for thirty years. He graduated from Edison High School in 1972. He was a member of a rock band during his youth and played at various locations in the Mid-Atlantic area. Raymond moved to the Fredericksburg area in 1986 and started working for the Fredericksburg Country Club as facilities manager in 1988. He was an avid collector of trains and would display his collection for the children at the country club during the Christmas Season each year. He is survived by his Fiancé Elizabeth Hiltbrand; three daughters, Heather M. Hepner of Florida, Rachael E. Carter of Fredericksburg, Sarah A. Carter of California; his mother, Elizabeth E. Carter of Fredericksburg; a sister, Darlene E. Shumate of Texas; five grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Mr. Nelson Minor Staples, 92, of Spotsylvania died on Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at Mary Washington Hospital. Mr. Staples served in the United States Army during World War II. He was one of the 1st charter members of Sylvania Heights Baptist Church and a member of the American Federal Government Employees Union Local #1786. He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Way and her husband, James of Hartwood and Janet Brown and her husband, Joel of Richmond; three granddaughters, Jackie Pizzini, Kimberley Good and Jaime Way and two great grandchildren, Dylan and Rachel Good. Mary Jane Heffern, 84, of Salisbury NC and formerly of Culpeper VA and Long Branch NJ, died Saturday October 5, 2002 at Autumn Care of Salisbury. Mary was born March 22, 1918 in East Liverpool Ohio to Wilkie and Thresa Kinsey. She married
Vernon Wilson Heffern on February 7, 1942. Together they attended the Salvation Army Training College in New York City, preparing them to serve as officers with that organization for ten years. Mary was a devoted wife and helpmate, assisting and supporting her husband in his professional work and in his many civic and religious activities. They spent 53 years together until the time of his death in 1995. Surviving are her three children: Robert Heffern and his wife Diane of Salisbury NC, Barbara Sue Heffern McBride and her husband David of La Crosse WI, and Thomas Heffern and his wife Janet of Clinton TN; grandchildren: Thomas, Collin, Peter, Robert, Todd, and Andrew Heffern, Jane, John, and James McBride; great grandchildren: Caleb, Joseph, Noah, and soon to be born Daniel Heffern; sister: Helen Kinsey of East Liverpool Ohio; sisters-in-law: Lois Kinsey of Franklin TN, and Marion Phillips of Port Orange FL; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Beside her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by brothers: Collin, Harry, Wilkie, Donald, Ray, and Robert Kinsey, sisters: Minnie Hyder and Ruth Sanford; and great grandson: Isaiah Heffern. Doris Elizabeth Tiller, 81, of Culpeper died Sunday, October 6, 2002, at Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 30, 1921 in Colonial Heights, Virginia to the late Gordon Newton Thompson and Mary Ethel Pride Thompson. Although she was a homemaker, Mrs. Tiller held a number of jobs outside the home including a Librarian at Dahlgreen Naval Weapons Center, a Secretary for Farmington Elementary School it's first year and a Secretary at the old Animal Hospital on Route 15 with Dr's Graves, Magura and Lipscomb. While married
to Mr. Tiller, who worked for Ford Motor Co., they would enjoy taking long trips together to retrieve vehicles and return home. Survivors include two children, Hallie Virginia Huet Buraker and her husband, Kenny H. and James Mifflin Huet, Jr. both of Culpeper. Additional survivors include two grandchildren, Ken M. Buraker of Washington, DC and Darrick G. Buraker of Culpeper, one brother, Ronald Thompson of Chesterfield, VA and two sisters, Lois Mills of Richmond and Charlotte Wilkins of Prince George County, VA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Mifflin Huet, her second husband, Everett Shell and her third husband, Hoye Thomas Tiller, two brothers, Kenny Thompson and Raymond Thompson and one sister, Lucille Kuenz. Miss Anne Barlow, 75, of Fredericksburg died Sunday, January 19, 2003 at Mary Washington Hospital. Formerly of Richmond, she was the only child of James and Mary Barlow and was a member of Varina Episcopal Church. Anne was educated at the College of William and Mary and graduated from Richmond Professional Institute. She taught for many years with her mother at their family-owned kindergarten and pre-school. Anne was a poet and was published in several literary periodicals, most notably, The Lyric and the West Virginia Poetry Society Magazine. A resident of Fredericksburg since 1992, she was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church. A graveside service will be held at Laurel Hill Methodist Church cemetery, Varina, VA on Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at 11:00am with the Rev. Michael Hadaway of Varina Episcopal Church officiating. Elizabeth H. Hitt, 87, of Culpeper died Friday, October 11, 2002, at Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born September 2, 1915 in Brandy Station to the late Harvey Austin Hensley and Annie Dixon Brown Hensley. Mrs. Hitt was employed thirty-three years with Southern Garment in Culpeper. Mrs. Hitt is survived by her husband of fifty-years, Charles E. Hitt of Culpeper, one sister, Mary Eleanor Hensley Borntrager of Summerduck, two half-brothers, Clifford and Ed Hensley, one half-sister, Frances Hensley Smith and fourteen nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey E. Hensley and Willie Frank Hensley and two sisters, Anne Hensley Hogue and Laura Mae Hensley Sterling.
