WINTER
Carol Susan Winter, born March 7, 1952, died Saturday, January 26, 2002. She was preceded in death by her father, Ray G. Rhodaback. She is survived by her husband, Stephen Charles Winter; her son, Stephen Matthew Winter; her mother, Carol Nan Curtis and stepfather, Gerald D. Curtis of Petersburg; sister, Judith L. Griffith; and brother-in-law, Dwight Griffith of Prince George, Va. A memorial service will be held at Saint Peter's Catholic Church, 8th and Grace St. at 7 p.m., Friday, February 1, 2002.
Samuel Creighton, VSU professor, dies

Dr. Samuel Creighton, a Virginia State University professor and a former dean of liberal arts and education, died Friday. He was 63 and lived in Henrico County.
He joined the faculty in 1981 as vice president of student affairs and had also been acting dean of the school of education. At his death, he was professor of guidance and counseling in the Department of Educational Leadership. Mr. Creighton was a VSU alumnus and a native of Dinwiddie County.
Mr. Creighton earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's in guidance and counseling from VSU. He earned a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Toledo in Ohio. From 1971 to 1974, he was dean of students at Stockton State College in Pomona, N.J., and returned to Virginia to take a post as dean of students at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.
He spent four years as director of instructional programs for the Virginia Community College System before returning to his undergraduate alma mater in 1981.
Mr. Creighton served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Freeman Creighton; and his mother, Ida Louise Creighton of Ettrick.
A funeral will be held Wednesday at noon at Virginia Hall on the VSU campus. Burial will be at Southlawn Cemetery in Prince George County.
BERRY
Porter Duane Berry, 86, died January 24, 2002 in San Antonio, Texas. He was the widower of Ellener Thompson Berry. He was retired vice president of investments with Dean Witter in San Antonio. Mr. Berry was born May 22, 1915 in Orange, Va., the first child of Lucie
Carter Oman Berry and Christopher Calhoun Berry. He was preceded in death by his brother, Irvine
Carter Berry. He is survived by his sister, Selma Berry Hill of Richmond, Va.; two nephews, one niece and five great-nieces. Mr. Berry was a member of the Class of 1937 at Washington and Lee University where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma, Omicron Delta Kappa and Sigma Honor Society. At W&L, he was an All-Southern Conference football player. He also boxed and was on the track team. During World War II, he served in the Army with the Special Services. Mr. Berry lived in San Antonio for more than 50 years. Family and friends will remember his generosity and high spirits. A memorial service will be held in San Antonio. A private funeral service will be held in Madison, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Margaret Short Burgess, age 85, died Wednesday, January 30, 2002 in John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell after suffering from a brief illness. Mrs.Burgess was born August 21, 1916 in Dabney, N.C., the daughter of the late Ira and Alice Evans Short. She was the widow of Waverly L. Burgess who died in 1977. Margaret was a member of Broadway Baptist Church for over thirty years and was also a retired employee of Reynolds Metal with thirty years service. Surviving are a daughter, Laura B. Croom of Prince George County; a son, Reginald N. Batterson of Powhatan, Va.; six grandchildren, Mark A. Batterson, Paul S. Beloved wife and mother, Ida L. Dempsey, 73, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2002. She is preceded in death by a daughter, Edna Ford. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Clarence W. Dempsey; four daughters, Evelyn Krause of Schweinfurt, Germany, Rosie Sydnor, Barbara Prousalis and Diane Dalton; four sons, Edward Dempsey, Victor Dempsey, Steve Dempsey and Jeff Dempsey; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister, Kurt and Brigette of Germany. Mrs. Dempsey was a retired supervisor with Thalheimers dept. store after 21 years. EDELSTEIN
Sidney Edelstein, 92, of Silver Spring, Md., passed away on January 30, 2002. He was the beloved husband of Helen Edelstein; devoted father of Dr. Michael C. and Beth Edelstein; and the loving and cherished grandfather of Lauren, Mark and Scott. He is also survived by his brother, Irving Edelstein of New Jersey; and his sister, Beatrice and her husband, Ralph Diamond of New York. He was a loving uncle to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was a disabled American World War II veteran and a charter member of Jewish War Veterans, Post 692, Silver Spring, Md. Funeral services will be held Thursday (today) at 2 p.m. at the Richmond Beth-El Cemetery Chapel in Forest Lawn, 4000 Pilots Lane. ERCA
Alexis Christ Erca passed away January 25, 2002. "Al" was born in Barberton, Ohio in 1924 to Alice Rochard and Christ Sam Erca. Graduating from Barberton High School in 1941, Mr. Erca attended university two years before enlisting in the Army Iar Corps. He served in the Pacific as a navigator in the Jolly Rogers 90th Bomb Group. Mr. Erca returned to Ohio University after the war, graduating in engineering in 1948. While there he was an enthusiastic member of TKE fraternity and a major in the Air Force Reserve. Mr. Erca moved to Midlothian in 1968 and retired in 1987 as Director of Manufacturing Engineering for E.R. Carpenter. He achieved a life masters in bridge. He was a charter member of the Brandermill Country Club. Retirement was spent travelling throughout the world. He and his wife Shirley became winter Floridians in 1996. Mr. Erca became ill while vacationing in the Bahamas, spending four months at Miami's Jackson Memorial before his death in January. We will always remember Alexis for his optimism, courage and vigor. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters, Alison and Abby; sons, Arden and Chris; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Erca's desire to posthumously "throw a big party" will be honored at the Brandermill Country Club in the spring.
GARRETT
Anne Sadler Garrett, age 90, of Richmond and a resident of Westminster-Canterbury, died January 19, 2002. She was born March 24, 1911 to Annie Elizabeth Powers Sadler and Joseph Perkins Sadler. Anne was the widow of Roy Maxwell Garrett. She is survived by three daughters, Jo Anne West of Chapel Hill, N.C., Susan Rickert of San Francisco, Calif., and Jenny Garrett Fife of Roanoke, Va.; and one son, Robert Evans Garrett, also of Roanoke, Va.; seven grandchildren, Edward West, Amanda Wallingford, Sara, Rachel, and Tevis Jacobs, Mathew and Katherine Garrett; and three great-grandsons, Garrett, Gill and Nicholas West. Anne attended Westhampton College. She had been an active member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, serving as the first female member of its vestry. Anne was a retired kindergarten teacher of St. Michael's Parish Day School and a member of the Order of St. Luke the Physician and the Women's Club. A memorial service will be held February 1 at 1 p.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Rockaway Rd., Bon Air. Reception to follow service. GRAY
Frances Stringfellow Gray, 95, formerly of Wakefield, Va., passed away peacefully in Newport News on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 after a long illness, which she faced with characteristic courage, dignity and grace. She was born in Culpeper County on November 28, 1906 to the late George Ficklin Stringfellow and Mamie McMullan Stringfellow. She was a graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg and was married for 31 years to Marvin L. "Red" Gray, late of Wakefield, until his death in 1964. For many years she taught Latin and Mathematics at Wakefield High School and later at Tidewater Academy in Wakefield, where she also served as Headmistress. Mrs. Gray is survived by her children, Barbara Gray Macondray of Sausalito, Calif., Kathryn Gray Bradshaw of Newport News, Va., and Marvin L. Gray Jr. of Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a large extended family to whom she was devoted. Services will be held at Wakefield United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2002 with the Rev. Dr. Jim Becker and the Rev. Dick Holley officiating. Interment will follow in Waverly Cemetery, Waverly, Va. The family will receive visitors at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the afternoon of the service.
