The remarkable life of Eileen M. Day ended early Monday morning February 24, at her home near Sperryville, surrounded by family. Born in Montclair, New Jersey in 1925, she was the only child of the late Evelyn Davies Mitchell and Robert Mitchell. Following her father's death when she was five, she moved with her mother to Washington, D.C. She graduated from Washington's Woodrow Wilson High School in 1943 and later attended George Washington University. In 1946, she married
Naval Academy graduate, Walter Day. His military and working career took them to Fredericksburg, Virginia, Camp Lejeune, NC, Key West, Florida, and Tuscon, Arizona. Returning to Virginia in 1960, they made their way from the outskirts of Washington DC to a farm in Fauquier County, Virginia. In 1968 the family moved to her farm near Sperryville, Virginia in the county of Rappahannock. Though ending in divorce in 1971, her marriage to Walter Day produced nine children. In 1976 Eileen married
David Marshall Dwyer. Their marriage ended in friendship in 1983. Eileen began her real estate career in the mid-sixties working as an agent for Thomas and Talbot of Middleburg, Virginia. Receiving her Broker's license in 1975, she opened her own company, Eileen Day, Realtors at what is now the Middle Street Gallery in Washington, VA, and soon acquired The Clopton House there, moving her offices in 1978. Over the course of her career she walked, or became familiar with, virtually every piece of property in Rappahannock County. "There are many wonderful places in Rappahannock County," she once said. "I can't buy them all so the next best thing is helping the right people find them." Eileen's passion for life encompassed her work and family, home and gardens, where she took much solace. Over the years she transformed the grounds of her working farm into a profusion of color and a source of sustenance, and like nature itself, Eileen's life was forever renewing itself. Whether riding in the hunt, surf fishing at Ocracoke, or expressing life's complexity through her photography and watercolors, Eileen opened herself to possibility. Undeterred by a diagnosis of cancer in 2001, she traveled to Tuscany, Italy, in the summer of 2002, attended her daughter, Johanna's stage performances on New York City's Broadway, in Washington D.C., and in Chicago, planted and harvested two bountiful gardens and made three trips to the home she designed and built on North Carolina's Ocracoke Island. During her career she served as a director and president of the Piedmont Board of Realtors and as a director of the Virginia Association of Realtors. She was also a director of the Greater Piedmont Area Association of Realtors and spent six years on the Rappahannock Association for Arts and Community (RAAC) Board of Directors. Eileen Day, Realtors was the primary sponsor of the Fodderstack Races for a number of years and she continued to serve as a member of the Recreational Authority, until her death. In recent years she was a volunteer with the Rappahannock Free Clinic and served on Hearthstone School's Advisory Board. Eileen is survived by her nine children - Stephen, Margaret, Robin, Kevin, and Maureen Day of Rappahannock County, Donal and Vincent Day of Charlottesville, Lisa Eiland of Winchester and Johanna Day of New York City - and sixteen grandchildren. Her grace and unassuming kindness are a living legacy. Her earthly presence will be profoundly missed. A Mass will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church on Saturday, March 1, 2003 at 10 am. A Memorial Celebration will be held at 3 pm on March 8, 2003 at CCLC's Washington School House located on Salem Avenue in Washington, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to one or more of the following organizations: Hospice of the Rapidan, P.O.
