Taylor Nelson Butler
Taylor "Tate" Nelson Butler, 91, of Culpeper, Va., and formerly of Granite City, Illinois, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. He was born July 7, 1912 in Milton, Illinois to the late Alvin Butler and Ina Alice Davis Butler.
Mr. Butler was honored as a 50-year Mason and was also a Shriner. He was formerly self-employed as owner of the Rose Bowl Restaurant in Granite City.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Doris E. Metcalf-Butler, and three step-children, M. Byron Metcalf, Sr. of Clarkston, Michigan, Terry B. Metcalf of Collinsville, Illinois and Sharon S. Vilga and her husband, Joseph, of Orange, Va.
He is also survived by four step-grandchildren, M. Byron Metcalf, Jr., Ryan Paul Metcalf, Catherine Vilga and Joseph F. Vilga, II.
Additional survivors include a brother, Clarence Butler and his wife, Virginia, and two nephews, Richard Taylor Coulson and his wife, Marilyn, and Clarence Edward Coulson and his wife, Marilyn, all of Granite City.
A funeral service will be held Monday, Sept. 8, at 2:30 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, with Father David Martin officiating.
A private interment will be held at a later date.
Found and Sons Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Leon Guy Dodson, Jr.
Leon Guy Dodson, Jr., 70, of Unionville, Orange County, Va., died on Friday, Sept. 5, 2003.
He was born November 23, 1932 in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
His parents were the late Leon Dodson and Elizabeth Brown.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Della M. Dodson.
Survivors include three sons, Leon Guy Dodson, III of Unionville, Ronnie Dodson of Unionville, Larry Dodson of Locust Grove; two daughters, Valerie Middleton of Unionville, Janice Dodson of Manassas; four grandchildren, Ronnie Dodson, Jr., Tyler Dodson, Trevor Dodson, Ashlee Middleton; two sisters, Annie Mae Kerns of Haymarket, Elizabeth Dunn of Seattle, Wash.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. at Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove, with the Rev. Brian Harfst officiating.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill Memorial Park in Spotsylvania.
Pallbearers will be Robert Kelley, Arnold Bennett, Don Schley, Al Johnson, Chris Wilson, Grover Wilson.
The family will receive friends on Monday, Sept. 8, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sept. Milford Brown
Milford Franklin Brown, 84, of Fredericksburg, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.
He worked for the DC Transit Authority for 26 years. He loved music and was a member of Eastland United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Edna Mae Raines Brown; four sons, Milford F. Brown, Jr. of Lignum, Maurice G. Brown of Elkins, WV, Marshall H. Brown of North Carolina and Michael I. Brown of Fredericksburg; two sisters, Viola Settles of Maryland and June Fraizer of Falls Church; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, Sept. 7, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Fredericksburg from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Monday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Gerald Vaiden officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Nathaniel (Nathan) Nelson Embrey
Nathaniel (Nathan) Nelson Embrey, 17, of Reva, Va., passed away Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was born September 13, 1985 in Culpeper, Va.
He was a member of the Class of 2003 Culpeper County High School, enjoyed music and cars, was a member of C.C.H.S. M.C.J.R.O.T.C. for three years.
Survivors include his mother, Zann N. Miner and her husband Steve of Reva, Va.; his father, Bernard Embrey of Rixeyville, Va.; his sister, Jessica Embrey of Culpeper, Va.; his niece and nephew, Jordan and Marley Miner of Culpeper, Va.; his aunts and uncles, George Nelson and his wife Trish of Connecticut, Joe Nelson of New Mexico, Diane Kennedy and her husband Frank of Alabama, Robert Embrey and his wife Jo Ann of Rhode Island, Joyce Cortese and her husband Victor of Pennsylvania; and four cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
Interment will follow in Fairview cemetery.
Rev. Michael Gray will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Richard Frazier, Patrick Walsh, Michael Nelson, Jeff Weber, Nathan Barnes, and Charles Hoffman.

Emily S. Powers
Emily Cornelia Smith Powers of Newport News, died at home August 23, 2003, after a brief illness.
She was the widow of John Franklyn “Jack” Powers, who was a long-time football coach and educator in the Newport News Public Schools.
Mrs. Powers, the daughter of the late Cornelia Petty Smith and the late Charles Hamilton Smith, was born and reared in Culpeper, Virginia.
She graduated from Culpeper High School, and received a B.A. degree from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond, Class of 1948.
Following college, she moved to Newport News to teach art at Warwick High School. After rearing her children, she returned to teaching in 1973, and was still teaching in the Continuing Education Department of the Newport News Public Schools. In 1989, she received the Adult Educator of the Year Award for the state of Virginia from the Virginia Association of Adult and Continuing Education.
Mrs. Powers was an active member of North Riverside Baptist Church, where she sang in the adult choir for many years, and instructed a children’s choir.
Survivors include two daughters, Pam Powers Holtzclaw and Paige Powers Steele, and one son, Paul Hamilton Powers. She is also survived by two grandsons, William and Cole Holtzclaw, and her sister, Ida Smith Hall.
A memorial service will be held at North Riverside Baptist Church on Tuesday, August 26, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will be private.

Ruth Weeks Stanley, 84, of Bealeton, Va., died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at the Orange County Nursing Home, Orange, Va. She was born on Dec. 18, 1918 in Rockbridge County, Va.
She was a lifetime member of the Remington United Methodist Church and of the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by a daughter, Julia Ruth Stanley of Bealeton, Va.; a son, Harvey W. Stanley Sr. of Bealeton; two sisters, Catherine White and Elizabeth Aylor, both of Madison, Va.; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wade P. Stanley Sr., son, Wade P. Stanley Jr., father, Harvey Samuel Weeks, mother, Florence Anna (Whitesell) Weeks, and sister, Edith Field.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. at Remington United Methodist Church with The Rev. Michael Payne officiating. Interment will be in Remington cemetery.

Norma Payne Dulaney, 80, of Culpeper, died on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community. She was born on March 25, 1923 in Jeffersonton, VA to the late Cleveland George Payne and Sadie Barron Payne.
Norma was a life-long member of the Jeffersonton United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of fifty-three years, Harry T. Dulaney.
Norma was blessed with so many devoted friends.

Eugene Ellis Williams, 73, of Alexandria, Va., died on August 21, 2003, at Mt. Vernon Hospital in Alexandria, Va.
He retired as Resident Manager for Lang Property of Alexandria, Va. and was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Sperryville, Va.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; seven sons, Eugene Williams, Thomas Williams, Terry Williams, Derick Williams, Anthony Williams, Jerome Williams, and Eugene Lee; one daughter, Debra Veney; two sisters, Virginia Curtis of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Beatrice Newman of Alexandria, Va.; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Belinda.

Mabel Mae Ralls
Mabel Mae Ralls, 75, of Sperryville, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. She was born October 29, 1927 in Rappahannock County to the late Berl Atha Atkins and Alice Baker Atkins.
Mrs. Ralls is a member of Thornton’s Gap Regular Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of fifty-six years, Dennis Ralls, Sr., and two children, Dennis Ralls, Jr. and his wife, Joyce of Sperryville and E. Jimmie Hitt and his wife, Debra of Lanexa, VA.
Additional survivors include two sisters, Josephine Alther and her husband, Roy of Sperryville and Janie Atkins of Sperryville, four grandchildren, Matthew Ralls, and Jason, James and Justin Hitt and two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Nicholas Hitt.
She is also survived by four nieces, Ann Pullen, Betty Settle, Peggy Dodson and Dorothy Mee and two nephews, Roy A. Alther and Steven Alther.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ralls was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Atkins and a sister, Anna Marie Atkins.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with Rev. John K. Burke and Rev. Kirby Shenk officiating.
Interment will follow in Sperryville cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at Found and Sons Chapel.

Stanley Ray
Stanley Ray, 80, of Fairfax, Va., died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at Sleepy Hollow Nursing Home in Annandale, Va. He was born December 7, 1922 in Marion, S.C. His parents were the late Rufus and Elizabeth Ray.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Mary (Lil) Ray; his son, Robert S. Ray and his wife Lorita; his step-daughter, Linda Fisher and her husband Edward; his step-son, Gary Madison and his wife Catherine; and 10 grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Ray.
Stanley worked for Owens and Dove for approximately 16 years as a heavy equipment operator, and loved operating a crane. He also loved hunting and fishing and was an “A-1” mechanic.
A memorial service will be held at Clore-English Funeral Home on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. conducted by Robert Ray.

John E. Allen, Sr.
John E. “Jack” Allen, Sr., 68, of Spotsylvania, formerly of Culpeper, died at his residence Wednesday, Aug. 20, 200.
He was the retired owner of Allen Inspection Services, a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and a Korean Conflict Army Veteran. He was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa H. Allen; three daughters, Katie Allen and Rebecca Allen, of the home, Alisa Chapella of Charleston, S.C.; four sons, John E. “Jack” Allen of Richmond, Bobby Allen, Danny Allen, and Joey Allen all of Culpeper; his mother, Evelyn Allen of Mt. Rainier, MD; one brother, Richard Allen of Lancaster, PA.; one sister, Judy Mallow of Annapolis, MD; and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held Friday, Aug. 22, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Culpeper National cemetery.

Edith (Pitts) Dixon
Edith (Pitts) Dixon, 78, of Culpeper, Va., formerly of Rochester, N.Y. God took his hand and led her home on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Charles Everett Dixon.
She is survived by one son, Charles E. Dixon, II of Rochester, N.Y., two daughters, Kathryn D. Doyle of Malden, MA and Elizabeth “Beth” Baldwin, son-in-law, Dr. Thomas A. Baldwin, two grandsons, Everett and Phillip Baldwin and one granddaughter, Madeleine Baldwin all of Culpeper.
Edith was an avid reader, loved to travel with family and especially loved to spend time with her grandchildren.
