Mary M. Bowles
Mary M. Bowles, 73, of Culpeper, passed away on June 19, 2003, at her home.
She was born on December 24, 1930 in Culpeper, Va. to the late Rosevelt Burger and Helen Josephine Clark.
She attended school in Culpeper County. She was a member of Free Union Baptist Church in Culpeper and was a machine operator for Keller Manufacturing in Culpeper until the time of her illness.
She is survived by 10 children - four daughters and six sons, Helen Josephine Bowles, Patricia Ann Lee and husband Wallace, Lillian Marie Tyler and husband Oliver, and Mary M. Bowles all of Culpeper, Va., Tommy Bowles Jr. and wife Rosie of Warner Robins, Ga., Deacon Willie Bowles and wife Anne, Deacon George Bowles, Sr., Frankie Bowles and wife Carolyn, Gregory Bowles and wife Shirleeta, and Russell Bowles all of Culpeper, Va.
She had 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She also leaves behind a sister, Elizabeth Jordon of Washington, D.C.; one aunt, Margaret Rose, and one uncle, William Clark, both of Maryland; three sisters-in-law, Lillian Gray, May Bowles, and Evelyn Lee, all of Culpeper, Va.; one brother-in-law, Worthy Thomson of Washington, D.C.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Bowles, Sr.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 24, at Free Union Baptist Church at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Calvin Lawrence, Pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in Fairview cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 12 noon until time of the service at 1 p.m.
She will lie in state at W.C. Thompson Funeral Home on Monday, June 23, from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

James Ernest Hutcherson
James Ernest Hutcherson, 75, of Culpeper, Va., died on June 20, 2003, at Culpeper Health and Rehab. Center.
He was born on March 24, 1928 in Culpeper.
He was a retired truck driver for Embassy Dairy.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of Alum Spring Baptist Church.
His parents were the late Ernest Linwood Hutcherson and the late Tabathia Yowell Hutcherson.
His wife was the late Lois H. Hutcherson.
Survivors include one son, Lewis Hutcherson of Culpeper, Va.; one daughter, Thersa Cooper of Union, South Carolina; two sisters, Anna Hutcherson Brown of Rixeyville, Va. and Barbara H. Campbell of Elkwood, Va.; one brother, Linwood Thomas Hutcherson of Culpeper, Va.; two grandchildren, Aaron and Amber Moran of Stuarts Draft, Va.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at Clore-English Funeral Home with the Rev. John Miller of Alum Spring Baptist Church officiating.
Interment will be in Fairview cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Monday from noon until time of the service.

Timothy Roy Cantrell, 57, of Warrenton, died June 17, 2003, at McGuire VA Hospital in Richmond, Va. Joyce Sedivy Hutcheson
Joyce S. Hutcheson, 64, of Culpeper, Va., passed away at her home on June 16, after a prolonged struggle with cancer. “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”, II Corinthians 5:6-10.
Joyce was born August 26, 1938 in Church Road, Dinwiddie County, Va. to Chester Paul and the late Ethel Williams Sedivy.
Joyce graduated from Longwood College in Farmville, Va. with a degree in Library Science and taught school in Culpeper for several years. She was an avid lover of poetry, literature, and music, as well as flower gardening and arranging. Joyce was an active member of Culpeper Christian Assembly; active in the women’s auxiliary of the Gideons International for over 30 years at both state and local levels; served as secretary for the Culpeper Children’s Bible Mission; active in the local Christian Women’s Club; and active in the 4-H both as a youth and as an adult leader and All-Star.
Joyce is survived by her father, Chester Sedivy; husband of 46 years, Mason H. Hutcheson of Culpeper; daughter Abigail Dolinger of Columbia, SC with husband Randall Dolinger and sons Joshua, Joel, and Daniel; daughter Rebekah Haines of Umatilla, FL and son Jason Billstein; daughter Elizabeth Shultz of Culpeper with husband Ron Shultz, Jr. and daughters Heather and Melissa; son David Hutcheson with wife Margaret of Brightwood, Va. with sons Paul and Mark.
Joyce was preceded in death by her mother, Ethel Sedivy, son Paul Cabel, and granddaughter Bethany Joyce.

Thomas Chapman Gibson
Thomas Chapman Gibson, 81, of Calverton, Va., died on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Prince William Hospital.
He was a maintenance engineer for E-systems for 25 years prior to his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lucinda Gibson.
He is survived by his children, Mary L. Willie, Frances V. Settles, Bruce G. Gibson, and Diane E. Gibson of Calverton, Va.; his brother, Marshall Gibson; nine grandchildren, Glenda Davis, Janice Williams, Gary Willie, Andy Willie, Terralis Gibson, Jerdan Davis, Berlos Davis, Angel Davis and Maria Gibson; nine great-grandchildren and four great, great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at Crossroads Baptist Church in Calverton, Va. on Saturday, June 21, at 1 p.m. Rev. Earl King is pastor of Crossroads Baptist Church.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Jessie Lewis “Scooby Doo” Jackson, Sr.
Jessie L. Jackson, Sr., 52, of Fredericksburg, formerly of Culpeper, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital. He was born November 10, 1950 in Culpeper to Ruth Lewis Jackson of Culpeper and the late Duke Venie Jackson, Sr.
Mr. Jackson joined the Culpeper Police Department in 1977, and served as a field training officer. He was a member of the F.O.P., honored as “Officer of the Year” in 1981, and had recently retired from the department in 2002. He enjoyed his family life and all of his friends.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Georganna June Jackson, his seven children, Anita Jackson-Potts of Brandy Station, Jesse Lewis Jackson, Jr. and his wife Toshua of Rapidan, Jessica Nicole Jackson of Fredericksburg, Ryan Austin Jackson of Madison, Dale Patrick Rhodes, Jr. of Lignum, Andrew David Lloyd Rhodes of Lignum and Stephen John Schroeder, II of Madison and three grandchildren, MiAisha Anae Jackson, Tiara Niquel Jackson and JaMari Aaron Potts.
Additional survivors include his two sisters, Earlene V. Brown and her husband Ellsworth, Lillian Mae Johnson and her husband James, one brother, Duke Venie Jackson, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth, his father and mother-in-law, Mr. Frank David and Teresa Ann Brown, and one brother-in-law, Archie Newman.
Other survivors include devoted nieces and nephews, Robert Lee Williams, Jr. and his wife Windy Wayland, Regina Louise Jackson and her husband Dale, and Pamela Denise Williams, great nieces and nephews, Robin Lea Williams, Kyle I. Williams, Dale E. Jackson, Jr. and Quentin D. Jackson, and a host of many other nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends and loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his father, and one son, Aaron Baldwin.

Mary Groves Wood
Mary Groves Wood died peacefully at her home in Norfolk, Va. on June 16, 2003.
She had relocated there recently to be with her only child, Joan Park Buckle, her husband Stewart and her beloved grandsons, Matthew (12) and Spencer (10).
Mary was one of fourteen children of Pearl and Ottaway Groves. Born and raised on their farm in Bealeton, Va., she loved reliving the adventures of growing up in that large family.
She is survived by her sisters, Virgie Groves Leach of Stafford, Va., Elva Groves Embrey and Maxie Groves Samuels of Fredericksburg, Va., Elizabeth Groves Hoffman of Remington, Va., Dorothy Groves Utz of Culpeper, Va., and Alice Groves Hanson of Norfolk, Va., and her brothers, Evans M. Groves and his wife Lesbia of Warrenton, Va., O. William Groves and his wife Mary and John F. Groves and his wife Frances of Remington, Va., and Russell L. Groves and his wife Helen of Penn Laird, Va., and their respective families. She was a special aunt to many of her nieces and nephews.
She was married
to H.E. Park and A.C. “Buck” Wood and sadly, both husbands predeceased her.
Her life was full of care and devotion to members of her large family. She volunteered for many years at the Fauquier Hospital and will be remembered for the thousands of floral arrangements she made for sale in the gift shop or just as a nice gesture for a friend. She spent many years working in the dental practice of Dr. Hodgkin and Dr. Allison and later for the offices of Leach Rental Company.
Graveside services will be conducted by Rev. Larry Murphy of St. James Episcopal Church and held in the Remington cemetery at 11:30 a.m. today with a memorial luncheon immediately following at The Fauquier Springs Country Club. Viewing will be at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at which time the procession will leave for the graveside service.

Margaret L. Hite
Margaret Louise Hite, 85, of Bealeton, died on Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Oak Springs Comprehensive Care Center.
She was born in Amherst County on October 19, 1917, a daughter of Walter Bascomb Henson and Annie May Floyd Henson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William McDonald Hite, a son, William Junior Hite and her twin sister, Mildred Campbell.
She is survived by three sons, Franklin Kenneth Hite of Schuyler, Va., Alfred W. Hite of Culpeper and Donald E. Hite of Bealeton. Also surviving is her half-sister, Elderine Campbell of Lexington, Va., five granddaughters, four grandsons, thirteen great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

Carolyn Brown Harding
Carolyn Brown Harding, 67, of Culpeper, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at her residence. She was born February 16, 1936 in Batna, Virginia to the late James T. and Ellen J. Brown.
Mrs. Harding graduated from Culpeper County High School and attended training sessions at Germanna Community College. She retired in 1998 after twenty-seven years of service to the Culpeper County School system where she worked as a bookkeeper. Carolyn previously attended the Culpeper Baptist Church, and was an active member at the Richardsville United Methodist Church, where she was the long-time treasurer. She was an active member of the Culpeper V.F.W. Womens Auxiliary Post 2524, and she enjoyed her hobbies, involving herself with the Culpeper Cross-stitch Club and was an avid amateur photographer. She was a collector of depression glass, Longerberger baskets, and various antiques. In addition, she was a longtime supporter of the Culpeper and Fredericksburg Historical Societies.
Mrs. Harding is survived by her husband, Abb Roger Harding, Jr. of Culpeper; two sons, Rick Harding of Culpeper and David L. Harding and his wife Nancy of Frederick, MD, and two grandchildren, Tory C. Harding and Grace K. Harding. She is also survived by three sisters, Kathryn Leavell of Culpeper, Mary Jo Hedrick of Charlottesville, VA and Bonnie S. Thomasson of Seffner, FL.

M. Lucille Hitt
M. Lucille Hitt, 97, of “Chestnut Ridge Farm”, Rixeyville, Va., died on June 14, 2003, at Marshall Manor, Marshall, Va.
She was born September 18, 1905.
She was a lifetime member of Oak Shade United Methodist Church and had a love of flower and vegetable gardening.
Her parents were the late Amos Bunyon Hitt and the late Sarah Catherine Finks Hitt.
Her husband was the late Frederick William Hitt.
Survivors include a brother-in-law, Boyce H. Simpson; 15 nieces and nephews; 38 great- nieces and nephews and 20 great, great-nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held today at 4:30 p.m. at Oak Shade United Methodist Church, Rixeyville, with the Rev. Lynn Wilbur officiating.
Interment will be private at Chestnut Ridge Farm Family cemetery.

Jack Leland Pettit
Jack Leland Pettit, 86, of Culpeper, died June 13, 2003, at the Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was born October 24, 1916 in Nutley, N.J. to the late Ralph Leland Pettit and Carolyn Donnely Pettit.
In 1938 Mr. Pettit graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. That same year Jack went to work for the Heil Company as a mechanical engineer. In 1939 he went to work for the Metalwash Machinery Co. in Newark, N.J. as a chemist. The next 18 years he worked his way up to Vice President and General Manager. During the war years and during this time he worked on a special top secret project involving the filtration of uranium for the Manhattan Project.
In 1957, Mr. Pettit took a job in Cambridge, MA, as Chief Engineer at Carr Fastener, a major supplier to the automotive industry worldwide. Jack returned to New Jersey in 1962 working as Chief Engineer for several small engineering firms. In 1970, Mr. Pettit moved to Columbus, Ohio and took a position with Huffman Wolfe, where Jack was involved with the design and construction of nuclear power plants around the world. Mr. Pettit had many memories of his trip to Japan where he helped on one “Special Project”.
Mr. Pettit was designated “Master Gardener” while in Columbus, Ohio. His hobbies includled woodworking and trains of all sorts. He was also very involved in his college alumni association, serving as his class Secretary for a number of years.
Mr. Pettit is survived by his children, Linda C. Pettit of Belfast, Maine and John L. Pettit and his wife Mary Ann of Marshall, Michigan.
Mr. Pettit was preceded in death by his wives, Frances R. Pettit and Doris J. Pettit.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, in Culpeper.
Interment will be at Restland Memorial Park, in East Hanover, New Jersey.

Mary Frances Aylor Dawson, 72, of Brightwood, died April 23, 2003, at her residence. She was born October 7, 1930 in Madison and was the daughter of the late Claude Curtis Aylor and Carrie Clore Aylor.
She is survived by her husband, William Cooke Dawson of Brightwood; a son, William Michael Dawson and his wife Joy of Culpeper; three brothers, Raymond F. Aylor, Lloyd E. Aylor, and Floyd N. Aylor, all of Brightwood; a sister, Sally Catherine Dickenson of Madison; two grandchildren, Mary Katherine Dawson Sheads and her husband Charlie, William Jamison Dawson of Madison; and a great-grandchild, Katerina F. Sheads. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude I. Aylor and Reggie G. Aylor.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 25, at Fairview Christian Church cemetery conducted by Dr. Tommy Palmer and Elder Toliver Utz.
