E. Franklin Warner
E. Franklin Warner, 74, of Castleton, Va., passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at his residence. He was born June 16, 1928 in Rappahannock County.
Mr. Warner was a farmer, member of the 15th Street Presbyterian Church in D.C., Rappahannock County School Board, United Way Fund of Culpeper, Past President of the Rappahannock County Library Board, Past President of the Rappahannock County Lions Club, former chairman of the Rappahannock County Equalization Board on Real Estate Assessments, President of the Scrabble School Preservation Foundation, Inc., Elder Presbyterian Church, life member of the N.A.A.C.P., former civil rights activist with various involvements in numerous civil rights, Fair Housing, and community activities including the planning for and participation in the 1963 “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom”, and a member of Martin Luther King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference, participated in the planning and operation of the 1968 “Poor People’s Campaign”. He served several different times as agency representative for United Givers’ Fund, and Combined Federal campaign, preceded by service in Community Chest fund raising (1953). Retired Senior Program and Budget Analyst for the White House Office of Management and Budget.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy E. Warner; one daughter, Michele Sloan-Smith (James) of Fort Washington, Maryland; one sister, Catherine H. Dennis (McKinley) of Scrabble; two grandchildren, Shelton R. and Shaun Q. Sloan of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Warner is also survived by three nieces, Mary Ella Wise (George), Estelle Lewis (John), and Jackqueline Wider; two nephews, Mac Aurther (Margret), and James Hackley; and a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins and very close friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 23, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at the Culpeper Presbyterian Church with Dr. Wayne Bernardo and Rev. Phillip Bailey officiating.
Interment will follow in Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery in Woodville.
Pallbearers are Rodney Lewis, James Smith, James Hackley, Johnny Lewis, Robert Darby, and Ken Marlow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the 2nd Bank and Trust, 102 South Main Street, Culpeper, VA 22701, to be distributed among his favorite charities in his name.

Elizabeth Browning Fletcher
Elizabeth Browning Fletcher, 85, of Culpeper, Va., died on Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Blue Ridge Christian Home.
She was born on September 17, 1917 in Broad Run, Va.
She was a homemaker and a member of Culpeper United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda E. Fletcher of Culpeper, Va.; two sisters, Juanita B. Butler of Bealeton, Va. and Margaretta B. Coombs of Marietta, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Emmett Browning; her mother, Bessie Browning; her husband, Dixie P. Fletcher; four brothers, Robert Browning, Thomas Browning, James Browning, Harry Browning.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 3:30 p.m. at Ivy Hill cemetery in Upperville, Va. with Rev. John Crawford officiating.

Marjorie Taylor Johnson
Marjorie Taylor Johnson, 77, of Catlett, died May 20, 2003, at the Fauquier Hospital.
She was born Sept. 21, 1925 in Fauquier County, near Auburn, a daughter of the late John W. Taylor and Hazel Gardner Taylor.
For twenty years she was a resident of Michigan City, Indiana where she was an early pioneer in computer operations working with the large old I.B.M. computers. In the late 60’s or early 70’s she and her husband moved back to Fauquier County. She was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Warrenton. She was an active volunteer in many organizations but especially with the Fauquier Family Shelter. She enjoyed nature and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert O. Johnson.
She is survived by two sisters, Catherine Taylor Pence of Stanford, Ky. and Bonnie Taylor Downes of Warrenton; six nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton.

Preston Louis Johnson
Preston Louis Johnson, 75, of Culpeper, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Prince William Hospital. He was born June 22, 1927 in Oakpark, Va. to the late Charles Euclied Johnson and Carrie Virginia Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Novum Baptist Church, the Culpeper V.F.W. and the A.A.R.P. He enjoyed hunting and gardening and was a heavy equipment operator.
Survivors include his wife, Eileen Johnson of Fredericksburg; three children, Wanda Gail Johnson Clatterbuck and her fiance, Phillip “Sonny” Geer of Culpeper, Harold H. Johnson and his wife, Wanda D. of Harrisburg, Pa. and Pamela Johnson Robey and her husband, Ronny of Spotsylvania and four stepchildren, Carolyn Crouch and her husband, Herb of Spotsylvania, Carl Eugene Nestor of Parkersburg, W.Va., Rev. Steve Nestor and his wife, Bonnie of Parkersburg, W.Va. and Sharon Marlene Philips and her husband, David of Spotsylvania.
Additional survivors include two sisters, Mattie Aylor and her husband, Richard “Junior” of Reva and Edna Mossburg and her husband, Frank of Bethesda, Md. and three grandchildren, Michael Lloyd Clatterbuck, Matthew Bryan Clatterbuck and Michelle Dawn Cook.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his previous wife of twenty-seven years, Ruth Johnson, ten brothers and sisters and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 22, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 23, at 11 a.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with Pastor Jeff Light officiating.

John James Dennis
John James Dennis, 86, a retired farmer, of Radiant, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the Culpeper Health Care Center.
He was born April 15, 1917. He was the the son of the late Mollie Marks Dennis and husband of the late Frances Mae Dennis.
He is survived by four daughters, Patsy C. Jenkins and husband Claude of Locust Dale, Brenda Hitt and husband Charles of Amissville, Rose Foster and husband Sammy of Aroda, and Mollie Welch and husband Steve of Flint Hill; two sons, Ronnie Dennis and wife Ada of Leon and Steve Dennis of Warrenton; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a special family friend, Mrs. Effie Aylor Nicholson of Leon.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, at Preddy Funeral Home in Madison. Interment will be in Madison Memorial Gardens.

Martha Virginia Bannister Greene
On May 18, 2003, Martha Virginia Bannister Greene was called to rest. Martha was born on January 24, 1918 to the late Arthur and Mollie Bannister of Eggbornsville, Va. She joined Beulah Baptist Church at an early age with her parents and siblings.
She attended school in Culpeper County and later attended high school in Christiansburg, Va. and college at Virginia Union University.
She moved in 1945 to Washington, D.C., where she managed a restaurant. She married
James Thomas Greene in November 1951 and of that union were three children. She returned to Culpeper with her family in 1959 and resided in Norman since that time.
She was preceded in death by eight brothers, Arthur, Jr., James, Russell, John, Armstead, Charles, Sam and LaFayette; three sisters, Etta, Emma and Anna.
She leaves to mourn her passing her devoted husband, James T. Greene, two sons, Donald and Laurence, one daughter, Talatha Dennis all of Culpeper; one step-son, James; one step-daughter, Saundra; four sisters, Agnes Jackson of Takoma Park, Md., Lillie Scott of Culpeper, Nellie and Olethia Bannister of Greenbelt, Md.; one son-in-law, Jeffrey Dennis and one daughter-in-law, Audrey Greene; four grandchildren, Doran Greene, Mark Dennis, Lauren Greene, and Anthony Greene and a host of relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 21, at 12 noon at Good Hope Baptist Church, Norman, Va. with the Rev. William Scott of Culpeper officiating. Interment will be in the Good Hope Baptist Church cemetery, Norman, Va.

Arthur Spencer Payne
Arthur Spencer Payne, 54, a structural and consulting engineer, died May 14, 2003, in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Mr. Payne, a Culpeper native, was a graduate of Virginia State University and started his engineering career with the Virginia Department of Highways. Subsequent employment included structural engineering positions with the Bechtel Corporation, Fairfax County Government, Greenhorn & O’Mara, Inc. and The Town of Warrenton.
His interests included golf, travel, and photography. He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Culpeper.
Survivors include a daughter, Jessica N. Payne and a granddaughter, Aliciah N. Payne, both of Herndon, Va.; his mother, Lillian Apperson Payne and his uncle, Andrew Apperson, Jr. both of Culpeper, Va.; and a host of relatives and friends.
Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his father, Henry Gordon Payne, in 2000.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 22, from 11 a.m. until time of the service at 1 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church. Rev. Milton Branch Sr. will officiate. Interment will follow in Fairview cemetery.

Hattie Elizabeth Shifflett, 97, of Criglersville, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Autumn Care of Madison.
Born August 12, 1905 in Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Shifflett and Jenny Shifflett.
She is survived by special friends, Virginia and Gloria Knighting of Criglersville, many cousins and her Autumn Care friends.

Mary Jean Armistead
Mary Jean Armistead, 76, of Sperryville, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at Fauquier Hospital. She was born June 25, 1926 in South Paris, Maine to the late Harold Gilbert Shaw and Marion Simpson Shaw.
Mrs. Armistead began her nursing studies at the University of Maine and completed her training in Atlanta, Georgia. She later became a homemaker and caretaker to her loving husband whom she married
November 18, 1947.
Mrs. Armistead is survived by her husband, Reginald Gray Armistead, Sr., a son, Reg Armistead and his wife, Eddie of Fairfax, and a daughter, Pamela Wallin and her husband, Doug of Fairfax.
Additional survivors include two brothers, Harold Shaw, Jr. of South Paris, ME and Murray E. Shaw of Chambersburg, PA, and five grandchildren, Reggie, Ryan and Joshua Armistead and Sheryl and Kelly Wallin.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 26, at 10:30 a.m. at Sperryville United Methodist Church with Pastor Merlin Shorb officiating.
Interment will follow in Culpeper National cemetery.

Linda Sue Caplinger
Linda Sue Caplinger, 38, of Culpeper, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at her residence. She was born January 29, 1965 in Culpeper to Irvin Garfield Jenkins, Jr. of Culpeper and Joyce Ann Jenkins of Tomsbrook, Va.
Linda had a “heart of gold.” She loved her Rhododendron Bush, and her dog, Precious. She especially enjoyed traveling to yard sales.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her fiance, William Embrey of Culpeper, her son, Richard Harold Caplinger, Jr. of Culpeper, one grandson, Quintin Isaiah Caplinger, and William’s mother, Dorothy Lamb who has been ever supportive.
Additional survivors include a brother, Jimmie Lee Jenkins and his wife, Melody of Tomsbrook, VA, a sister, Molly Lillard and her husband, Donny of Rixeyville, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 26, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 27, at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with Rev. Edward Marsh officiating.
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memory Gardens, Jeffersonton.
Pallbearers will be Jimmie Jenkins, Jr., Jessie Ray Jenkins, Donny Lillard, Jr., Donny Ray Lillard, Sr., Richard Hannagian and Malco Tellez.
