Irvin Guy Gates
Irvin Guy Gates, 69, of Culpeper, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was born April 20, 1934 in Capitol Heights, Maryland to the late Irving Guy Gates and Evelyn Simmons Gates.
Mr. Gates was known by many, including the majority of Fire and Rescue Squads around the county. He was a frequent visitor to “Culpeper Cruziers”, and supported many community functions including numerous Bingos. Mr. Gates was a well-respected employee of Cintas.
Survivors include two children, Peter Irvin Gates and his wife, Stephanie, and James Christopher Gates, and their mother, Margaret Ellen Scott and her husband, Bobby all of Culpeper.
Additional survivors include one sister, Margaret Bassford of Waldorf, Maryland, a “granddog”, Bear and many other friends and close family members.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 30, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 31, at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with Rev. John S. Farrar officiating.
Interment will follow in Fairview cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Gates, Eric Butler, Marshall Bower, Bruce Manice, Louis Sedmock and Cecil Banks.

Shirley Ann Robinson of Culpeper, Va., died on Friday, May 23, 2003, at Greater SE Community Hospital in Washington, D.C.
She was a member of The Redeemed Church of Christ in Washington, D.C.
She is survived by five children, Antonio Rowe, Gary Robinson, Ashley Robinson, Amanda Robinson and Sabrina Robinson and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at Antioch Baptist Church, Culpeper, Va. at 12 noon on Saturday, May 31, with Elder Jerry L. Harrison of The Redeemed Church of Christ, Washington, D.C. officiating.
Interment will be in the Robinson Family cemetery in Catalpa.

Elizabeth Yoder of Aroda, Va., died peacefully at Mountain View Nursing Home on May 22, 2003.
She was born on November 28, 1921 in Kisciusko County, Ind., daughter of the late Allen R. and Lydia (Troyer) Miller.
Elizabeth is survived by seven sons and two daughters, Allen Yoder and wife, Michelle, of Canton, Ohio, Alvin Yoder and wife, Clara, of Aroda, Lydia Yoder and husband, Ivan, of Winfield, Pa., Freeman Yoder of Westminster, S.C., Jerry Yoder and wife, Mary, of Dillwyn, Paul Yoder and wife, Marty, of Culpeper, Raymond Yoder and wife, Brenda, of Buckingham, Esther Clark and husband, Herb, of Richmond, James Yoder of Amelia; 35 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gideon I. Yoder; two daughters, Edna Yoder and Betty Myers.
A funeral service was held on Sunday, May 25, at the Powhatan Mennonite Church. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Bobby Leon Odle
Bobby Leon Odle, 61, of Warrenton, Va., died on May 24, 2003, at his home.
He was born August 22, 1941 in Coeburn, Va. a son of the late William Rufus Odle and Virginia Blevins Odle.
Bobby served in the U.S. Air Force for nearly six years and was discharged in February 1966 with the rank of Airman First Class.
He worked for many years as Used Car Sales Manager at Rick Hunt Ford and Dodge dealerships in Warrenton. He was a member of the Warrenton Assembly of God Church and was a member of Gideon’s International-the Fauquier Camp.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Polly W. Odle; one daughter, Shannon Odle Bywaters of Bealeton, Va.; one grandson, Nick Odle of Bealeton.

Emily Cordelia Leathers Ross, 87, of Haywood, died Friday May 23, 2003 at the Culpeper Regional Hospital. She was born January 21, 1916 in Haywood, Madison County. She was the daughter of the late Gatewood Leathers and Eolia Fuqua Carpenter Leathers and wife of the late Henry Pigeon “Ike” Ross.
Mrs. Ross was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Haywood.
She is survived by a son, Jimmy Ross and wife, Joyce of Haywood; a special daughter-in-law, Dorothy Ross of Banco; a brother, Gatewood Wright Leathers Jr. and wife, Lucille of Elkwood, Va.; twenty eight grandchildren; forty eight great-grandchildren; nineteen great-great grandchildren; and a special family member, Topsy Marie Allen of Waynesboro. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Leota R. Tucker and Hilda R. Figard; six sons, Pete, Jackie, Albert, Billy, Butch and George Ross; four brothers, Courtland, Clarence, Victor and Harold Leathers; and a sister, Beatrice Blankenbaker.
Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Rev. Brian Wagner will officiate.

Helen Lynn Clatterbuck, 40, of Culpeper, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. She was born Oct. 9, 1962 in Charlottesville to Doris Kennedy Summers and the late George Kennedy.
Mrs. Clatterbuck loved flowers and gardening.
Mrs. Clatterbuck is survived by her husband of nine years, Lonnie Gene Clatterbuck Jr.; two children, Timothy Wayne and Matthew Allen Jenkins, both of Culpeper; two sisters, Connie Miller of Louisa and Deborah Sisk of Chalottesville; one brother, Thomas Kennedy and her maternal grandmother, Clara Virginia Weakley, both of Culpeper.
The family will receive friends Monday, May 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.

Anna Lucille Frazier, 88, of Culpeper, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Evergreen Meadows Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 7, 1914 in Rappahannock County to the late Grover Aurther and Ethel Ganth Aurther.
Mrs. Frazier loved to sew.
Mrs. Frazier is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, Clyde Watt Frazier; two grandchildren, Mark Tharpe and his wife, Kate and Kathy Brown and her husband, Billy all of Culpeper; six great grandchildren, Ashley Nicole Brown, Bill Brown, Shannon Marie Tharpe, Tonya May Searfoss and her husband, Dustin, Marcus Channing Tharpe and Katlyn Mariah Tharpe and one great-great grandchild, Noah Chase Searfoss.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Alice Virginia Tharpe; one brother, Odie Aurther and one sister, Iva Lee Bailey.

E. Franklin Warner
E. Franklin Warner, 74, of Castleton, Va., passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at his residence. He was born June 16, 1928 in Rappahannock County.
Mr. Warner was a farmer, member of the 15th Street Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., Rappahannock County School Board, United Way Fund of Culpeper, Past President of the Rappahannock County Library Board, Past President of the Rappahannock County Lions Club, former chairman of the Rappahannock County Equalization Board on Real Estate Assessments, President of the Scrabble School Preservation Foundation, Inc., Elder Presbyterian Church, life member of the N.A.A.C.P., former civil rights activist with various involvements in numerous civil rights, Fair Housing, and community activities including the planning for and participation in the 1963 “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom”, and a member of Martin Luther Kings Southern Christian Leadership Conference, participated in the planning and operation of the 1968 “Poor People’s Campaign”. He served several different times as agency representative for United Givers’ Fund, and Combined Federal campaign, preceded by service in Community Chest fund raising (1953). Retired Senior Program and Budget Analyst for the White House Office of Management and Budget.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy E. Warner; one daughter, Michele Sloan-Smith (James) of Fort Washington, Md.; one sister, Catherine H. Dennis (McKinley) of Scrabble; two grandchildren, Shelton R. and Shaun Q. Sloan of Upper Marlboro, Md.; and two great grandchildren.
Mr. Warner is also survived by three nieces, Mary Ella Wise (George), Estelle Lewis (John), and Jackqueline Wider; two nephews, Mac Aurther (Margret), and James Hackley; and a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins and very close friends.
A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Culpeper Presbyterian Church with Dr. Wayne Bernardo and Rev. Phillip Bailey officiating.
Interment will follow in Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery in Woodville. Honors will be provided by the Culpeper American Legion Post #330.
Pallbearers are Rodney Lewis, James Smith, James Hackley, Johnny Lewis, Robert Darby, and Ken Marlow.

Marshall Edward Long, Jr.
Marshall Edward Long, Jr., 82, of Culpeper, Va., died on May 21, 2003, at Culpeper Health and Rehab Center.
He was born on June 27, 1920 in Madison County, Va.
He retired as a manager from Coca-Cola after 27 years and car sales.
He was a member of Culpeper United Methodist Church.
His parents were the late Marshall Edward Long, Sr. and the late Mary Rhodes Long.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Nettie Hoffman Long of Culpeper, Va.; one son, Edward B. Long and his wife, Gloria of Rapidan, Va.; one daughter, Margaret A. Seale and her husband, Barry of Rochelle, Va.; two brothers, William H. Long of Alexandria, Va., and Robert R. Long of Front Royal, Va.; one sister, Mary Ann Mohrmann of Orange, Va.; four grandchildren, Barry Kevin Seale, Jr., Laura Ashley Seale, Benjamin Edward Long, and Marshall James Long.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 25, at 3 p.m. at Clore-English Funeral Home with Rev. John Crawford, III officiating.
Interment will be private in Culpeper National cemetery.

John Jerome Petro, 68, of Culpeper, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at his residence. He was born October 19, 1934 in Locust Township Catawissa, Pennsylvania to the late John Jerome Petro and Anna Theresa Petro.
Mr. Petro is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Anna Flora Petro; a son, Michael John Petro and his wife, Mary McIntosh Petro of Spotsylvania and a daughter, Pamela Ann Petro of Culpeper.
Additional survivors include two sisters, Cecilia Wozniak and her husband, Edward of McAdoo, Pa. and Frances Rubenstein and her husband, Maynord of Catawissa, Pa.; four brothers, Paul Petro and his wife, Agnes of Newark, Del. and Robert, Frank and Thomas Petro all of Catawissa, Pa.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marion and Albert Seybercht of Joppatowne, Md.; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Anne Marie Leiby of Wilmington, Del.
He is also survived by two grandchildren, Phillip Michael Petro and Catherine Louise Petro and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, John Jay Petro.
