GRINNAN
Adelaide Buist Grinnan, formerly of 5216 Edgewater Drive, Norfolk, currently a resident of Westminster-Canterbury in Virginia Beach, died peacefully on January 27, 2002. She was born April 19, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of the late Dr. George Lamb Buist and Adelaide Richardson Buist. She was the widow of Dr. R. Bryan Grinnan Jr. She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Norfolk, Va. Mrs. Grinnan was a graduate of Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn and Vassar College. She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, The Garden Club of Norfolk, The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Society for Preservation of Charleston, S.C., Society for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities and the Virginia Historical Society. Her special love was for working for the Woman's Auxiliary at Norfolk General Hospital where she served as President. For many years, she was chairman of the Interns and Residents Committee. Survivors include three sons, R. Bryan Grinnan III and wife, Patricia of Norfolk, George L. B. Grinnan, MD and wife, Karon of Virginia Beach, Richardson Grinnan, MD and wife, Lelia of Richmond; a sister, Martha Eleanor Buist of Hanover, N.H.; a brother, Richardson Buist and wife, Jean of Basking Ridge, N.J.; a sister-in-law, Helen Grinnan Cook of Louisville, Ky.; and seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, with the Reverend Charles A. Joy and the Reverend Allen
Johnson officiating. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Westminster-Canterbury. Mary Catherine "Kitty" Atkinson Gunn, 81, of Highland Springs, passed away Friday, January 25, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Percey B. Bates Jr. and Lafayette M. Gunn Jr. She is survived by her sons, Clifton LaRoy Bates and his wife, Kathy L. Bates and Raymond G. Bates; a stepdaughter, Cheryl Gunn Maxwell and her husband, Gary Maxwell; a sister, Jane A. O'Grady; a brother, Charles "Sonny" Atkinson and his wife, Cruz Atkinson; grandchildren, Raymond Scott Bates, Sharon B. Sale, Jeffrey B. Bates, Christopher L. Bates and Alisa J. Awad; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gunn was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Highland Springs. Fay Taliaferro Hammack, 67, of Tappahannock died Monday, January 28, 2002. She was the daughter of the late Trent G. and Annie Lasater Taliaferro. She was a member of Beale Memorial Baptist Church and St. Margaret's Alumni. She is survived by her four children, Russell Hammack III of Tappahannock, Susan H. Weiss of Ft. Mill, S.C., Margaret Bratton and Ellen Campbell, both of Richmond; and seven grandchildren. Graveside services for Leander Shepard "Shep" Hamrick, 76, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2002 in Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Shelby, N.C. The Rev. John Boggs will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home, Hartsville, S.C. is in charge. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church or Wake Forest University. Mr. Hamrick, widower of Mildred Marang Hamrick, died Monday, January 28, 2002. Born in Goldsboro, N.C., he was a son of the late Otto Vetus and Carolyn Mayes Hamrick. He grew up in Shelby, N.C., graduated from Shelby High School, and in 1950 graduated from Wake Forest University, just as his father had done before him in 1910. He served as a tail gunner on a "Liberator" bomber during World War II. He had many great achievements during his 35 years with the Ralston Purina Company and provided leadership in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina and South Carolina, prior to his retirement in 1985 as district manager. Lovingly known as "Big Shep", he was a devoted family man who knew and loved the Lord and regularly attended West Hartsville Baptist Church. He enjoyed sports, especially Wake Forest Demon Deacon sports, gardening, boating, hunting, fishing and animals, and in his earlier days he was an avid horseman. It could be said of Shep that he never met a stranger and he had a knack for making people feel his warmth with his bright smile, booming voice, and big, gentle hands. He was endearingly called "DooDaddy" by his grandchildren and taught each one to say "I'm my DooDaddy's buddy!" We will miss our big buddy. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Shep and Martha Hamrick of Shelby, N.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Bart Norwood of Hartsville, S.C., Marilynn and Harry Ware of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Amanda Hamrick, Street Hamrick, JoAnna Hamrick, Sarah Lynn Norwood, Barrett Norwood, Amelia Norwood, Henry Ware, Shep Ware, Robert Ware; a beloved friend, Elsie Allen Byrd of Hartsville, S.C. Allard Douglas Hobson, 82, of Richmond, born April 25, 1919, passed away Monday, January 28, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Margie P. Hobson; son, Douglas Kent Hobson and wife, Carol of Kenner, La.; daughter, Lynn H. Sutton of Richmond; and grandchildren, Bryan S. and Kasey D. Sutton and Cary Stuart Hobson. Mr. Hobson was a retired employee of Chowning & Wilmer Inc. Electrical Contractors after 40 years of service. He was a member of IBEW Local 666, a life member of Manchester Rescue Squad for 23 years, and a member of American Legion Post 137. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. John Korusek, 87, of Highland Springs, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2002. He was the husband of the late Nettie Waller Korusek, and is survived by his children, John Leo Korusek and his wife, Adena, Louise Lee and her husband, Doug, and Jerry L.
