William H. “Billy” Barber
William H. “Billy” Barber, 71, of Culpeper, died on Sunday, July 20, 2003, at his residence.
Born June 2, 1932 in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late John M. Barber Sr. and the late Sallie Henderson Barber.
He was retired from Carpenter Brothers Auto of Culpeper.
He is survived by one sister, Sally Barber Hawley of Falls Church, Va. and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John M. “Jack” Barber, Jr.
A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Fairview cemetery in Culpeper conducted by the Rev. Forest Porter.

John Edward Coates
On Friday, July 18, 2003, John Edward Coates died at his residence in Culpeper, Va.
He was a World War II veteran, a retired government employee and a talented musician.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; his daughter, Diane and many relatives.
Mr. Coates will lie in state at the W.C. Thompson Funeral Home today from 1:30 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral will be Wednesday, July 23 at Merrifield Baptist Church, 8122 Ransell Road, Merrifield, Va.

Helen T. Cockrill
Helen T. Cockrill, 80, of Fort Myers Beach, died July 17, 2003. She was born Oct. 21, 1922 in Rapidan, Va. She resided at Fort Myers Beach since 1971.
Helen is survived by her children, Susan Lair, Thomas (Judy) Cockrill, Charles (Marlene) Cockrill and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Lee Memorial Park, Fort Myers on Thursday, July 24 at 10:30 a.m.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation in Helen’s name be sent to Hope Hospice at 9470 Health Park Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33902.

Berta Kornacker Evans
Berta Kornacker Evans, 77, of Culpeper, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2003, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va. She was born July 1, 1926 in New York, NY to the late Frank Ludwig Kornacker and the late Mae Gherkin Kornacker.
Mrs. Evans was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting, reading, birds, dogs, and raising orchids. She enjoyed her volunteer work with C-cap in Front Royal for ten years and reading to school age children. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star since her youth in Huntington, NY.
She is survived by her husband, John J. Evans of Culpeper; children, Scott J. Evans of Culpeper, Christopher J. Evans of Culpeper, Deborah Evans-Doyle of Woodbridge, Va., Wendy E. Schleig of Strasburg, Va. and Lori E. Stetson of Bedford, Va.; sister, Marie K. Crossan of West Lake Village, Calif.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at Clore-English Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Fore officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private.

Richard Albert Monaco
Richard Albert Monaco, 77, of Culpeper, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at his residence. He was born Dec. 18, 1925 in Elmhurst, N.Y. to the late Antonio and Antonia Monaco.
Mr. Monaco was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church.
Mr. Monaco is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Julia Brooke Monaco and three children, Madeline Clarke and her husband, Ronald of Fredericksburg, Margaret Monaco of San Francisco, Calif. and Eleanor Elliott of Baltimore, Md.
Additional survivors include four grandchildren, Trevor and Christine Clarke both of Fredericksburg, and Paige and Matthew Elliott both of Baltimore, Md. and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, July 23, at 11 a.m. at Precious Blood Catholic Church with Fr. Leo Zonneveld officiating.
Interment will follow in Culpeper National cemetery with honors provided by the Culpeper American Legion Post 330 and the Culpeper V.F.W. Post 2524.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Peacock, Trevor Clarke, Matthew Elliott, Douglas Clark, H.B. Wood, and Bob Monaco.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10415 Mountain Run Lake Road, Culpeper, VA 22701 and/or to a charity of your choice.

Naomi F. Milstead, 99, of Midland, Va., died July 20, 2003 at her home. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 25 at 12 noon at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton by Rev. Michael Payne. Bernice Reynolds Jarrell, 93, of Gordonsville, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Orange County Nursing Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Gordonsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Carmon Hartsfield will officiate. Interment will be in Maplewood cemetery.

Jerry M. Nichols Jr., 76, of Culpeper, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at University of Virginia Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper is in charge of the arrangements.

Viola Belle Haines
Viola Belle Haines, 92, of Elkwood, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. She was born September 10, 1910 in Rappahannock County to the late Booten and Bertha Woodward.
Mrs. Haines was a member of Forest Grove Baptist Church. She loved to crochet, draw, and work puzzles.
She is survived by eight children, Mary Ann Woodward of Orange, Virginia Elizabeth Hitt and her husband, Harvey, of Elkwood, Mildred Mae Smith of Remington, Floyd Ambus Haines and his wife, Amanda, of Elkwood, William Edward Haines and his wife, Peggy, of Remington, Richard Harold Haines and his wife, Hazel, of Brandy Station, Elmer Lee Haines and his wife, Rebecca, of Culpeper, and John Haines, Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Brandy Station.
Additional survivors include thirty grandchildren, forty-two great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Haines was preceded in death by her husband, John Haines, three children, Rosemary Haines, Russell Thomas Haines, and Charles Turner Haines, and a stepdaughter, Beulah Haines Southard.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 21, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 22, at 2 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church in Amissville, with the Rev. Delbert Payne officiating.
Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Mark Wayne, David Troy, John Michael, Ricky Thomas, and Rinker J. Haines and Clint Walker. Honorary pallbearers will be William Glenn and Elmer Lee Haines Jr.

Simone Wouters Bowen
Simone Wouters Bowen passed away on July 17, 2003. She was born March 8, 1921 in Borgerhout, Belgium. She was the daughter of Joseph Wouters and Martha Delcroix of Belgium.
She married Charles Hay Bowen, Jr. of Remington on July 26, 1945 in Antwerp, Belgium.
As a “war bride” she later came to live with her husband in Remington.
She is survived by a daughter, Martha Gill; son-in-law, Ray Gill, of Fredericksburg; granddaughters, Jennifer Musselman of Florida, Cindy Baber of Charlottesville; two great- granddaughters; a niece, Martha Goedeme; two grandnieces and several great-grand nieces and nephews of Belgium.
Her parents and a sister, Marcelle Goedeme, preceded her in death.
Simone was a longtime member of Saint Lukes Episcopal Church in Remington, Va., a member of several local Bridge clubs and a member of the Remington Community Partnership.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 21, at 2 p.m. in the Remington cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Robert Carlin Mason, 68, of Orange, died on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Interment will be in Culpeper National cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 330 and V.F.W. Post 2524 both of Culpeper. Mary Helen Woodward, 54, of Leon, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal. George H. Jenkins
George H. Jenkins, 73, of Sperryville, Va., died on July 14, 2003.
He was born on September 6, 1929 in Rappahannock County, Va.
He was a retired steel worker.
His parents were the late Connor G. Jenkins and the late Mary Inez Jenkins.
Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Richard J. Jenkins and his wife Lillian of Boston, Va., Frank T. Jenkins and his wife Annie of Fairfax, Va., Maude Racer and her husband Charles of Boston, Va. and Mary Atkins and her husband Roy of Sperryville, Va.; a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Nelson R. Jenkins.
A funeral service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Clore-English Funeral Home with Rev. Oliver Bowles and Rev. Virgil Wilson officiating.
Interment will be in Culpeper National cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 330 and V.F.W. Post 2524 Honor Guard.

Frederick Reid “Bill” Hoffman
Frederick Reid “Bill” Hoffman, “Dairy Farmer and World War II Veteran”, age 84, of Culpeper, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was born July 9, 1919 in Catharpin, Prince William County, VA to the late William Fred and Mary Ellen Reid Hoffman. He was raised in Greenwich, VA by his grandparents, John Moore and Annie Hall Reid.
After high school he worked as a draftsman for Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941. While serving in the 8th Infantry Division he was part of the extended D-Day Invasion and was discharged shortly after the war ended. Returning to Greenwich, he worked as a farm manager in the Manassas area and later joined his uncle and mentor, Shirley Reid in operating a small farm. In 1955, he moved to Bel Pre Farm in Brandy Station as manager. For many years he was active in the Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department. Later he became involved with the Culpeper County Farm Bureau, serving as president for several terms. He was instrumental in moving the offices to their own facilities and current location and was especially proud of his state committee work to establish a two-year agricultural program at Virginia Tech.
Mr. Hoffman is survived by his devoted wife of sixty-years, Ruth Mae House Hoffman and four children, Frederick Lee and his wife, Nancy Martin Hoffman of Roanoke; John William and his wife, Catherine Fore Hoffman of New Hope; MaryAnn and her husband, Lynn Drew Yoder of Culpeper, and David Gordon and his wife, Darlene Frazier Hoffman of Culpeper.
Additional survivors include thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one sister, Ellen Hoffman Tayman and her husband, Ronald of Maryland, one brother, Joseph Hoffman and his wife, Helen of Maryland and numerous nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 18, at 11 a.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with Rev. R. Wayne Bernardo officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at Found and Sons Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
Interment will follow in Culpeper National cemetery with honors provided by the Culpeper American Legion Post #330 and the Culpeper V.F.W. Post #2524.

He was born Sept. 23, 1927, in Rappahannock County to the late Charles William Menefee and Missouri Florence Clark Menefee.
Mr. Menefee was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons, James William Menefee and his wife Peggy of Bealeton, and George William Menefee and his wife Sally Ann of Woodbridge; and four daughters, Frances Ann Brooks, Ruby M. Orange and her friend, Hurley Banks, Betty A. Settle and her husband Frank, all of Culpeper, and Juanita Kenney and her husband Larry of Reva.
Additional survivors include 10 grandchildren, David Lynn Menefee, Dana Lee Hensley, Tracey Brooks, William Brooks Jr., Gregory Wayne Settle, Jerry Franklin Settle, George Menefee Jr., Donna J. Davies, Patricia K. Messa and Michael D. Kenney; 19 great-grandchildren; and four nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Menefee was preceded in death by his wife, Corine Grady Wharton Menefee; two sisters, Alice Virginia Peyton and Ella Mae Menefee; and two brothers, Elbert Menefee and Issac Menefee.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 18, at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with the Rev. John S. Farrar and Deacon Virgil Jones officiating.
