Marjorie Bailey
Marjorie Inskeep Bailey, 86, of Culpeper, formerly of Orange, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community. Born Oct. 26, 1915, in Culpeper, she was the daughter of the late John Louis Inskeep and the late Lucie Yowell Inskeep. Her husband was the late Roger C. Jake Bailey.
She was a member of the Culpeper United Methodist Church and retired employee of the Orange County Welfare Department.
She is survived by: one daughter, Louise Bailey LaRue, and her husband Wayne B. LaRue, of Merritta, Ga.; three brothers, Robert Inskeep of Myrtle Beach, S. C., Russell Inskeep and Harold Inskeep, both of Culpeper; two sisters, Mary I. Carpenter and Mildred Earle Huffman, both of Culpeper; and two grandchildren, Katie LaRue and Emily LaRue.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Preddy Funeral Chapel in Orange.
A graveside funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. in Graham cemetery in Orange with the Rev. John Crawford officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Culpeper United Methodist Church, 1233 Oaklawn Dr., Culpeper, Va. 22701.
James Bryan
James R. Bryan, 86, of Culpeper, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at his residence. He was born Dec. 5, 1914, in Auburn Town, Tenn., to the late Houston and Minnesota Milligan Bryan.
Mr. Bryan was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed at Safeway for 25 years and was a lifetime farmer.
Survivors include a sister, Verna Mai Clark of Nashville, Tenn.; two dear friends, Sissy Ryan, of Culpeper, and Andy Calvert, of Culpeper; and his favorite niece, Jewell Clark Zan Dewerker.
Additional survivors include a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia Lee Bryan; his son, James “Buddy” R. Bryan Jr.; his stepson, Earl Pickerly, and two brothers, Sammy Lee Bryan and Carl Bryan.
The family received friends Thursday, Dec. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel.
A funeral service was held Friday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with the Rev. John Miller officiating.
Interment was held in Prospect Hill cemetery in Front Royal.
Pallbearers were Andy Calvert, Bill Watson, J.B. Yancey, Jim Sykes and Bruce Bourne.
Calvin Clatterbuck Sr.
Calvin Ray Clatterbuck Sr., 52, of Rixeyville died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was born July 7, 1949, in Elkwood to Charlotte Wilmoth Clatterbuck of Elkwood and the late Russell Campbell.
He is survived by: his mother; his son, Calvin R. Clatterbuck Jr. and his wife, Lisa Corbin-Clatterbuck; a grandson, Brandon Ray Clatterbuck; a step-granddaughter, Brittany Gail Reid, all of Rixeyville; and an uncle, Butch Clatterbuck of Culpeper.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Dec. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with Pastor Bob Graver officiating.
Interment will follow in Elkwood cemetery.
Pallbearers were Calvin R. Clatterbuck Jr., Scott Carter II, Junior Corbin, Bobby Hartsook, Johnny Elliott Jr., Johnny Elliott III, Louie Elliott and Woody Elliott.

Dixie Compton
Dixie Maddox Compton, 82, of Elkwood, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. She was born in Elkwood, where she lived her entire life until moving to the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community in June of 2000. Her parents were Felix Maddox Jr. and Sarah Stringfellow Maddox. Her husband was Samuel Russell Compton, a veteran of World War II, who died in 1971.
She was a member of Brandy Baptist Church since childhood, and attended her entire life until prevented by declining health.
She and her husband owned and operated Compton’s Grocery in Elkwood for many years. He was the postmaster of Elkwood for 25 years, and after his death, she was the postmaster for eight years until retiring. Throughout her life, she was interested in volunteer work; her volunteer activities included service with the Culpeper Literacy Council.
She is survived by two sons, David Compton, of Arlington, and Sam Compton and his wife, Elizabeth, both of Vienna, and a granddaughter, Sarah, of Vienna.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and six brothers and sisters.
The family received friends Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Richard Goff officiating and assisted by the Rev. Bill Snead.
Interment followed in Fair-view cemetery.
Pallbearers were Chuck Gyory, Dickie Maddox, Roy Whitlock, Harvey Hitt, Rickie Maddox, Arnold Jarrell, Lee Brown and Chris Holmes.
Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper was in charge of the arrangements.
William Corbin
William Randolph Corbin, 62, of Syria, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at his residence. He was born April 14, 1939, in Nokesville to the late Clarence Roland Corbin and Clara Marie Anderson Corbin.
William was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam.
William is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kathleen Miller Corbin, a daughter, Stacie Collier, and her husband, Donnie, and a son, Bryan Corbin, all of Syria.
Additional survivors include: his stepfather, George Welton Corbin, of Nokesville; three sisters, Betty Corbin Ross and her husband, Forrest, both of Haywood, Jeri Hawes and her husband, John, both of Nokesville and Janice Garrison of Centreville; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends.
He is also survived by Jessica Poage and her son, Kyle, both of Syria, who was like a daughter to him.
The family received friends Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Lynn Wilbur officiating.
Interment was at Culpeper National cemetery with honors provided by the Culpeper American Legion Post #330 and the Culpeper V.F.W. #2524.
Pallbearers were Donnie Collier, Forrest Ross, Glenn Jones, Daniel Collier, Josh Corbin and John Hawes.
Russell Ellett
Russell Hoffman Ellett, 82, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Eldercare Gardens Nursing Home. He was born April 4, 1919, in Cohoke to the late Archie C. and Estelle J. Ellett.
Mr. Ellett worked at Baltimore Ship Yards during World War II, and years later retired from the Washington Railroad Company. He was a member of Oak Shade United Methodist Church.
He was married
on June 9, 1958, at Elderbrook Methodist Church in Washington, D. C., to Roberta Slack Ellett.
He is survived by his brother, Allen F. Ellett, of Rixeyville; a nephew, James L. Ellett, of Rixeyville; a sister-in-law, Vera Green, of Sanford, Fla. and other nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
A funeral service was held Saturday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Lynn Wilbur officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment followed in Hillcrest Memory Gardens.

Robin Kilby
Robin Young Kilby, 38, of Culpeper, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at her residence. She was born Oct. 28, 1963, in Culpeper, to the late Thomas Williams and Carrie Stephens Wilson.
She made her life as a homemaker. Robin had a love for nature and for her family.
Surviving are her husband, Jerry Kilby, of Culpeper; her daughter, Nicole “Nicki” Kilby, of Culpeper; and her mother and stepfather, Carrie Stephens Wilson and her husband, Paul, of Louisa. Also surviving her are numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Williams, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Stephens.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 on Thursday, Dec. 6, at Clore-English Funeral Home.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at Clore-English Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Sachteleben officiating. Interment was private.

Mae Moore
Mae Rixey Moore, 95, of Culpeper, died on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community.
Born in Culpeper on June 10, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Francis Rixey and Fanny Newhouse Rixey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm Thompson Moore, her only son, Malcom Thompson Moore Jr., and her grandson, Malcolm Thompson Moore III.
She was employed by the Department of Social Services. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was a dedicated member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She spent her entire life teaching others how to live by the way she lived her own life.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Harriet Witt Moore, of Orange; four grandchildren, Mollie Armstrong, of Culpeper, Martha Moore Sheridan, of Waynesboro, Samuel Rixey Moore, of Baltimore, Md., and Mary Moore McLean, of Durham, N. C.; seven great-grandchldren, Malcolm McLean, William McLean, Samuel Sheridan, Phillip Sheridan, Peyton Sheridan, Rixey Moore and Emma Moore.
A funeral service was held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec.10, with the Rev. Kate Chipps officiating. Interment followed in Fairview cemetery.

Glenda Motter
Glenda Imogene Motter, 70, of Culpeper, died Dec. 4, 2001, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. She was born July 29, 1931, in Armstrong County, Pa., to the late Joseph Henry and Roma Oesta Mcaffose Redfield.
She was retired from Jamesway; a devoted member of the Brandy Station Vol. Fire Department Auxiliary since 1974 and a recipient of the Granny Curtis Award.
She was past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, and she had a love of people and enjoyed helping others.
She is survived by her children, William A. Motter and his wife, Renee, of Albany, Ga., Neil E. Motter and his wife, Darlene, of Culpeper, Lisa B. Gilmore and her husband, Eugene, of Frankfort, Germany, and Gina L. Shifflett and her husband, Davis, of Culpeper; grandchildren Melissa B. Williams, Joseph A. Gilmore, Johnathan A. Gilmore, Seth M. Bargonetti, Morgan Renee Shifflett and Erik Takach; a brother, Chauncey Redfield, of Peoria, Ill; and two sisters, Colleen Henry of Franklin, Pa. and Peggy Bowser of Beaver Falls, Pa.
A funeral service was held Saturday, Dec. 8, at Clore-English Funeral Home at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Barber officiating.
The family received friends prior to service time. The burial was private.

Clarence Payne
Clarence Keith Payne, 74, of Rixeyville, departed this life Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W. Va., after a long battle with diabetes. He was born May 6, 1927, in Hillsboro to the late Lester and Hannah Payne.
Clarence was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and in the Korean War. He retired after more than 40 years from R. L. Rider Construction Company in Warrenton.
He is survived by: his wife of 51 years, Mary Lee Jenkins Payne; four daughters, Portia Payne Jenkins and her husband, William III, and Diane Payne Coffey and her husband, Scott, all of Culpeper, Althea Payne Clark and her husband, Mark, both of Front Royal, and Vanessa Payne Cousineau and her husband, Mark, both of Cape Charles; two sons, Keith Payne and his wife, Lori, both of Culpeper and Reggie Payne and his wife, Jennie, both of Jeffersonton.
Additional survivors include two brothers, Delbert Monroe Payne of Purcellville and Paul Gerald Payne of Virginia Beach; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Joseph William Payne.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. at Culpeper National cemetery with Pastor Steve Dodson officiating. Honors were provided by the Culpeper American Legion Post #330 and the Culpeper V.F.W. Post #2524.
